On December 02, 2019 at 9:21 pm, on officer of the Madison Police Department was on extra
patrol in the business district located near Madison Avenue and Grandview Boulevard in the City
of Madison. During his patrol, the officer noticed a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta acting suspiciously in
the area. Once the occupant of the vehicle noticed the officer, he began attempting to elude
the officer. A traffic stop was attempted on the vehicle; however, the driver failed to stop and a
pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued south on Interstate 55 into the City of Ridgeland and
eventually into the City of Jackson ending at the intersection of Newman Avenue and Eminence
Row. The suspect vehicle entered the wooded area at this intersection and the officer
attempted to avoid the suspect vehicle and struck a tree at the intersection. The suspect
identified as Johnny Jermaine Coleman of Jackson, Mississippi was taken into custody at the
scene. During his arrest, Colman was found to be in possession of 17 dosage units of Ecstasy, 13
dosage units of Hydrocodone, Marijuana to include baggies and scales for distribution along
with a HiPoint semiautomatic handgun. There was also a license plate located inside the vehicle
that was registered to a separate vehicle. According to records, Johnny Jermaine Coleman is a
convicted felon; therefore, he will be charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon,
3 counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Felony Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer and
multiple traffic violations. Colman was booked into the Madison County Detention Center and
he will have his initial appearance in Madison Municipal Court in the following days. No injuries
were reported during this incident.
