HIGH-VOLTAGE, HIGH-CURRENT
DARLINGTON ARRAYS
Ideally suited for interfacing between low-level logic circuitry and
multiple peripheral power loads, the Series ULN20xxA/L high-voltage,
1 16 high-current Darlington arrays feature continuous load current ratings
to 500 mA for each of the seven drivers. At an appropriate duty cycle
2 15 depending on ambient temperature and number of drivers turned ON
3 14
simultaneously, typical power loads totaling over 230 W (350 mA x 7,
95 V) can be controlled. Typical loads include relays, solenoids,
4 13 stepping motors, magnetic print hammers, multiplexed LED and
incandescent displays, and heaters. All devices feature open-collector
5 12 outputs with integral clamp diodes.
6 11 The ULN2003A/L and ULN2023A/L have series input resistors
selected for operation directly with 5 V TTL or CMOS. These devices
7 10 will handle numerous interface needs — particularly those beyond the
capabilities of standard logic buffers.
8 9
The ULN2004A/L and ULN2024A/L have series input resistors for
operation directly from 6 to 15 V CMOS or PMOS logic outputs.
Dwg. No. A-9594
The ULN2003A/L and ULN2004A/L are the standard Darlington
Note that the ULN20xxA series (dual in-line arrays. The outputs are capable of sinking 500 mA and will withstand
package) and ULN20xxL series (small-outline at least 50 V in the OFF state. Outputs may be paralleled for higher
IC package) are electrically identical and share load current capability. The ULN2023A/L and ULN2024A/L will
a common terminal number assignment. withstand 95 V in the OFF state.
These Darlington arrays are furnished in 16-pin dual in-line plastic
packages (suffix “A”) and 16-lead surface-mountable SOICs (suffix
“L”). All devices are pinned with outputs opposite inputs to facilitate
ease of circuit board layout. All devices are rated for operation over the
temperature range of -20°C to +85°C. Most (see matrix, next page) are
also available for operation to -40°C; to order, change the prefix from
ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS “ULN” to “ULQ”.

DESCRIPTION
The ULN2001A, ULN2002A, ULN2003 and
ULN2004A are high voltage, high current darlington
arrays each containing seven open collector dar- PIN CONNECTION
lington pairs with common emitters. Each channel
rated at 500mA and can withstand peak currents of
600mA. Suppression diodes are included for induc-
tive load driving and the inputs are pinned opposite
the outputs to simplify board layout.
The four versions interface to all common logic fami-
lies :
ULN2001A General Purpose, DTL, TTL, PMOS,
CMOS
ULN2002A 14-25V PMOS
ULN2003A 5V TTL, CMOS
ULN2004A 6–15V CMOS, PMOS

These versatile devices are useful for driving a wide

range of loads including solenoids, relays DC mo-
tors, LED displays filament lamps, thermal print-
heads and high power buffers.
The ULN2001A/2002A/2003A and 2004A are sup-
plied in 16 pin plastic DIP packages with a copper
leadframe to reduce thermal resistance. They are
available also in small outline package (SO-16) as
ULN2001D/2002D/2003D/2004D.

description
The ULN2001A, ULN2002A, ULN2003A, and ULN2004A are monolithic high-voltage, high-current Darlington
transistor arrays. Each consists of seven npn Darlington pairs that feature high-voltage outputs with
common-cathode clamp diodes for switching inductive loads. The collector-current rating of a single Darlington
pair is 500 mA. The Darlington pairs may be paralleled for higher current capability. Applications include relay
drivers, hammer drivers, lamp drivers, display drivers (LED and gas discharge), line drivers, and logic buffers.
For 100-V (otherwise interchangeable) versions, see the SN75465 through SN75469.
The ULN2001A is a general-purpose array and can be used with TTL and CMOS technologies. The ULN2002A
is specifically designed for use with 14- to 25-V PMOS devices. Each input of this device has a zener diode and
resistor in series to control the input current to a safe limit. The ULN2003A has a 2.7-kΩ series base resistor
for each Darlington pair for operation directly with TTL or 5-V CMOS devices. The ULN2004A has a 10.5-kΩ
series base resistor to allow its operation directly from CMOS devices that use supply voltages of 6 to 15 V. The
required input current of the ULN2004A is below that of the ULN2003A, and the required voltage is less than
that required by the ULN2002A.
