METHODOLOGY

Materials

The materials that will be use in this study are the follows: Farm implements such as

animal, draw plow and harrow, gardening tools, shovel, grab hoe, used for land preparation,

cowpea seeds,CDD-88 as Planting materials, meter stick and the foot rule for measuring, base

marks for identification of the different treatments in block. Malathion and cymbush will be use

to control pest. Containers, plastic bags, sacks use to separate one sample from another triple

beam balance use to weigh the harvesting crop, notebook and ball pen use to record the data

gathered.

Methods

Location of the experimental area

The experimental are will be located at the takatak farm are of Naneng, Tabuk City, Kalinga

from the month of October to November 2019. The area had a total of 200 square meters.

Land Preparation

The area will be thoroughly prepared, all grasses are going to remove from the experimental

area. Alternate harrowing and plowing will be done two (2) times with an interval of five 950

days.
Experimental design

Randomized Complete block design (RCBD), with four blocks and five treatments will be

use in this study. The following will be the treatments use in the study:

T1 = 15 seeds/liner meter

T2 = 20 seeds/linear meter

T3 = 25 seeds/linear meter

T4 = 30 seeds/linear meter

T5 = 35 seeds/linear meter

Lay out of the experiment

A total area of 200 square meter will be in this study. This will be divided into four (4)

equal blocks to represent the replication. Each block was subdivided into five (5) equal plots

measuring 3 meters wide and 4 meters, respectively. This serve as drainage during heavy rains.

All treatments will be distribute at random by the draw lot method.

Planting the seeds and thinning

After a through preparation of the field, CDD-88 cowpea variety will be pant into each

designated treatment with the distance between rows of 50 cm. Each treatment will be thin into

each designated number of seeds per treatment 15 days after germination.

Weeds Management and Cultivation

Weeds will be prevent in the experimental area because they compete with the crop from

the nutrients, sunlight, moisture and spacing. They serve as alternate hosts of insects, pests and

pathogens.

Weeding and spot weeding will be done three (3) times, first weeding will be done two (2)

weeks after emergence, second weeding was done at maturity stage. There will be a spot

weeding at blooming stage.

Cultivation was done at the vegetative stage and the maturity stage

Pest and Diseases control

Pest like: cowpea aphids and cucurbit beetle are present and fed on the young leaves

shoots of the plants. This will be control by spraying Cymbush and Melathion insecticides

following the recommended dosage. Bean mosaic virus present in the field was also controlled

by manually pulling the infected plants.

Harvesting

Harvesting of pods will be done forty-five (45) days after planting. The Ten (10)

representative sample plants will be harvest as green pods with an interval of three days. The

guard plants will be harvest as dried pods to serve as planting materials for the next cropping

season. The pods will be harvest by carefully twisting by hand from the short recemes of the

plant.

The green pods of the Ten (10) representative sample plants will be count, measure and

weigh for data gathering.
