Higher-Order Questions:
How does cell phone usage during school impact your education?
What patterns do you expect to see in the responses to your survey?
Why do you think the data supports that idea?
Time: 90 min Have students complete the pre-assessment.

Next, introduce the topic for the lesson: How does cell phone usage during school impact
education? During group discussion, have students raise their hands if they have done the
following: texted during class, taken a phone call during class, played a game on their phone
during class, used social media during class. Remind students that we’re just taking a survey
because it’s hard to not touch your phone if it’s available and that they have lives outside of
the classroom.
Have students log onto the chromebooks and have them go to forms.google.com. Model for
them how to set up their Google Form and have students share with you their created forms.
Pass out the guide sheet of their surveys and work with students on the first two items on their
list. The last 3 items are questions that students generate on their own, so give students at least
10 minutes to brainstorm and craft their questions and survey responses.

Once students are all done with their surveys, they must now get at least 10 responses on their
survey. They can walk around the room with their Chromebooks and ask others to take their
survey. This should take about 15 minutes.

Once they are done, have students return to their seats and view their responses. All students
have the first two questions, so ask students the following:
On question one, keep your hand raised if you have more than 1 response for yes. Keep your
hand raised if you have more than 2 responses for yes (all the way until 10).
On question two, raise your hand if the most popular reason to use a phone during school was
texting. Raise your hand if the most popular reason to use a phone during school was gaming
(keep going all the way until the last option)

Hand out the interpretation of critical thinking questions handout. Complete the first two
questions with students on the board before allowing them to work independently on their data
analysis pre-writing.

Once students are done, they can flip the page and complete their interpretation paragraph
answering the question: “How does cell phone usage during school impact education?”

Wrap Up: have students volunteer to report what their most interesting finding was from their
data collection
