Wi-Fi Network
In the present, we certainly can’t get out of the internet network, whether to work,
learn, or just communicate while sharing information. And one of the tools that we can use to
access the internet connection is wifi. Wifi is the name of a popular wireless high-speed
internet and network connections. Devices that can use wifi technology include personal
computer, video-game consoles, phone and tablets, digital cameras, smart TVs, digital audio
players and modern printers.

The history of wifi is long and interesting. In 1971, ALOHANET connected the
Hawaiian Islands with a UHF wireless pocket network. Vic Hayes is often regarded as the
“Father of Wifi”. He started such work in 1974 when he joined NCR Corp. In 1991, NCR
Corporation with AT & T Corporation invited the first wireless products were under the name
Wavelan. The fisrt version of the 802.11 protocol was released in 1997, and provided up to a
2Mbit/s link speeds. This was updated in 1999 with 802.11 lb to permit 11Mbit/s link speeds,
and this proved to be popular.

A wifi network makes use of radio waves to transmit information across a network.
The devices that will be connected to the wifi should included a wireless adapter that will
translate data sent into a radio signal. Then, we have to connect the devices in to the wifi
router. Mostly wifi is protected by a password, so we must know and input that password.

Wifi consists of several components, that is:

a. Access Point
The Access Point function is like a Hub / Switch on a local network, which acts to
connect a local network to a wireless / wireless network of clients, at this access point
where the internet connection from where you are transmitted or transmitted over
radio waves.
b. Omni Antenna
To extend coverage area up to a few Kilometers you need an external omni antenna,
although when you buy an access point you have an omni antenna, but not enough
because it only has a power of about 3-5dB, to expand its range, you need an external
Omni antenna, average strength of 15dB.
c. Box Access Point
To protect your access point, a box-shaped protector may be made of plastic or iron
plate, on average this box is equipped with a safety lock, and this box should be
placed just below the antenna.
d. Pigtail Cable / Jumper Cable
Pigtail cable or jumper cable is required to connect between omni antenna with access
point, note the maximum length required only 1 meter, moreover you will experience
signal degradation (loss dB) At both ends of the cable there is a connector where the
connector type is adapted to the connector attached to your access point.
e. Lightning Arrester
As a safety from lightning then you need this tool that serves to distribute electrical
overload when lightning strikes to grounding cable, this component is mounted on
jumper cable between access point device with external antenna.

The advantages of using wifi is;

 Convenient
o Useful for smartphones, tablet devices and other portable devices to connect at
any convenient location within premises.
 Simplicity
o To connect a new device with a network, simply turn on the Wi-Fi and do the
simple configuration settings.
 Mobility
o Internet can be accessed from anywhere, ie. Bus, train, coffee-shop, super
market, etc.
 Expandability
o It is convenient to add more wireless devices with current hardware settings
without any cost and time.
 Efficiency
o WiFi enabled devices are used at offices for convenient to access their files at
any location and it gives more productivity for the company.
 Cost Control
o In WiFi network devices can be added without any cost unlike cables needs to
be get man power to do the job.
 Standardization of Technology
o Wi-Fi technology has standardized for all countries, it helps for the mobile
devices to connect the WiFi regardless of the location.

The disadvantages of using wifi is;

 Performance/Speed
o Although Gigabit WiFi is available in the market, we cannot get the gigabit
speed at all locations. Now cable network has 10 Gbps speed.
 Connectivity/Reliability
o WiFi signal is depends on the interference. Ie. Concrete wall will reduce the
signal strength. Also, there is a limit for distance to connect WiFi signals.
 Security
o WiFi router has various encryption methods to secure our network password.
Need to be done proper configuration before use the WiFi network.
