Polyatomic Ions

(Radicals)
(Molecular Ions)
Polyatomic Ions: Groups of two or more atoms, bonded together,
that have an overall positive or negative charge.
2−
OH − SO4
(hydroxide ion) (sulphate ion)
+ 3−
NH4 PO4
(ammonium ion) (phosphate ion)

Metal (Most polyatomic ions carry a negative charge

wannabe and therefore behave like non-metals)
Polyatomic ions behave as a single unit, and are treated as such when
forming compounds and writing molecular formulas.

Example: 1) Sodium hydroxide

Sodium ion Hydroxide ion Sodium hydroxide

Na+ OH − NaOH

If you’re lucky, your teacher has some
more of these for you to practice.
