Choral Methods I

Field Reflection 11/15

My planning and preparation for this teaching was much like the last one. I have done
this arrangement of “Let it Snow” before so I utilized my knowledge of the piece while prepping
what I was to teach. I wanted to build the parts from the bottom up, adding the melody last so
that the ensemble could hear the parts before adding the soprano melody on the top. I ensured
that I had all the parts in my ear beforehand so that I could teach them by rote to increase time
teaching over plunking it out part by part. (InTASC 6)
In execution of the teaching did end up becoming a plunking on the piano exercise so that
the students could hear the chords before they had to sing them. I found that they struggled to
hear the chromatic chords and needed piano assistance to accurately hit the notes until they
confidently knew the line. Unfortunately, in needing to play the parts simultaneously while
singing a part and trying to listen for mistakes created a clumsiness in my demeanor which
resulted in me coming across as unconfident, which led to me seeming underprepared. (InTASC

Although I feel I could have done better in execution of some aspects of the teaching, I
feel that overall, I was successful in what I wanted to teach in the time I had. I got through the
section of music that I wanted with each voice knowing their part well enough to sing it acapella.
I felt confident in my instruction with only few major errors and feel that I could easily
reproduce the lesson if I had too.
