Who is Galileo Galilei?
❏ Italian
❏ Astronomer
❏ Mathematician
❏ Physicist
❏ Philosopher
❏ Professor
FUN FACTS
❏ Galileo is called “The Father of Modern Science” due to his major
role in the scientific revolution
❏ Was mentioned in Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
❏ Wanted to be a monk in his youth
❏ Years after his death, Popes acknowledged Galileo’s findings
❏ Wanted to study medicine, but decided math was more interesting
Early life
Galileo parents are Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati, who
had 5 other children with Galileo as the oldest.

Born is Pisa, Italy in 1564. In 1574, the family moved to Florence,

Italy.

Went to University of Pisa in 1583, but dropped out due to

financial troubles.
Life as a Professor
After leaving University, he continued to study mathematics and got minor
teaching positions to support himself.

After publishing The Little Balance, a paper on Hydrostatic principles and it’s
weighing on small quantities, he got a teaching job at The University of Pisa in
1589.

He made a new paper on motion at the university, which strays away from
Aristotelian views on motion and objects. His teaching contract did not get
renewed.
Scientific accomplishments
❏ The Telescope: made in 1609, used by navigators to spot ships and for
navigations. Galileo got a fair amount of money from selling it.
❏ He discovered...
❏ 4 of Jupiter’s moons
❏ the rings of Saturn
❏ the fact that Venus has phases similar to the moon (crescent, full, half…)
❏ The milky way is made up of stars
❏ Our moon has mountains
❏ First person to realize Neptune was a planet and not a star, though it was not
discovered until 1846 as he lost sight of it
❏ One of the first to voice their belief in the Heliocentric system, wrote a book about
it, argued for it.
Scientific accomplishments
❏ Established that without air resistance, everything falls at the same rate
❏ Established that an object accelerates at a constant rate, with the distance fallen
being proportional to time squared
❏ Anything thrown or fired on Earth flies on an arc
❏ Stated the principle of inertia
❏ Proposed the first theory of relativity, that the laws of physics is the same for all
moving in a straight line with constant speed
❏ Discovered that pendulum's’ period of oscillation squared in proportion to its
length and the mass does not matter
❏ Wrote a book about the two new sciences (Motion and Materials) while in house
arrest
Challenges faced (in careers)
When Galileo started to believe and voiced his
belief about a heliocentric system ( planets revolve
around the sun), the church believed it to be
heretical. His works on it were prohibited and he
was originally sentenced to life imprisonment, but it
was lessened to house arrest for life as Galileo was
old. He was on house arrest for 8 years before
dying.
