Assessment Submission rules and conditions
Read all the instructions below before attempting the assessment task. Assessment tasks are tools used to
determine if you have the knowledge and skills to complete tasks to industry standards within the workplace.
Your trainer/assessor will help you throughout this task and it is your responsibility to provide enough
evidence to justify a competent decision by the trainer/assessor. If you do not understand the questions or
what is required, ask your trainer/assessor for assistance.

 For group assessments, all students are to contribute to the assessment tasks. You must work in
groups when the assessment is required and when that is the case you will be allocated in to groups
by your trainer in the class; hence your active presence is necessary
 Role play/presentation if part of the assessment must be done by all students. Photos or video may
be taken as part of the evidence.
You are to complete all tasks by the due date and assessments must have a coversheet attached. Online
submission opens one week prior to the due week and cut-off date is set on Saturday at 11:55pm in the week
of due date. If you think you do not have enough time to complete the tasks by the due date, discuss with the
trainer/assessor the reasons of why you cannot submit on time. Assessment tasks submitted late may not be
accepted by your trainer/assessor, leaving the learner with a Did Not Submit (DNS) result.

Introduction

This assessment is designed to gather evidence of your competence to provide leadership across an
organisation, specifically your performance in responding to an incident that breaches the
organisation’s policies and procedures and relevant legislation.
This assessment is based on the case study, Myhome2 (below). You should also familiarise yourself
with Myhome2 Human Resources Manual.
You will conduct research, investigate the incident (via role plays) and prepare various documents
for your assessment. A checklist is provided at Appendix A for you to confirm that you have included
all of the items required for assessment.

Part Assessment task

Part A Role-play: investigation
Part B Risk assessment
Part C Short report
Part D Code of conduct
Part E Investigation: desktop research
Part E Media statement

Instructions

Begin by reading the case study, Myhome2 (below) and familiarising yourself with the company’s
Human Resource Manual. The case study includes details an incident that has occurred that you
need to investigate and respond to.
Myhome2 Case study

You have been employed by Hans and Anchara, founders of Myhome2, as the human
resource manager. The business is in its third year of operation. The business started in the study of
Hans and Anchara’s home in Marrickville, an inner-western suburb of Sydney. Hans and Anchara
met on a Contiki Tour in Europe. They love travel and meeting people. After moving to Sydney, they
decided to open their home to a student studying at a nearby university. They were happy when
their guest told them that she felt as safe and happy as if she were at home with her family. The
idea for Myhome2 was ignited!
Myhome2 is a web service that links students studying in New South Wales with a host-family
home within 20 kilometres of their educational institution. The ‘guest’ is guaranteed their own
bedroom, bathroom and study area. Meals are provided five nights per week. The host families are
pre-screened by completing police checks and various other security checks. Typically, the host-
family has children (often in high school or university) who are studying in the local area.
The families of the Myhome2 guests, whether they are interstate in Australia or overseas, can be
assured that their young person is in a safe, family environment where they have privacy and the
guarantee of at least five home-cooked meals every week.
The business did very well last year; exceeding its targets, and have decided to expand this year.
They have over 150 employees, many of them customer experience assistants.
You have recently joined Myhome2 as the National Operations Manager. As the business is still in
the growth phase, you manage operations and have oversight of the human resources team. Hans
and Anchara have told you that they expect to employ more customer experience team members
in the next six months as they expand into Queensland, in areas like the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
The incident:
Hans and Anchara have organised a meeting of the senior leadership team. They tell the team that
this morning’s local newspaper has run a story this morning that alleges that Pree Lo, a customer
experience assistant in the city office, has been bullied and harassed by a team leader at Myhome2.
Pree is 18 years old and living in Australia while she completes her nursing qualification. She has
been working at Myhome2 for five months. Pree lives with a Myhome2 ‘host family’ about 20
minutes from the office.
Pree has told the journalist that since her first couple of days in her new job at Myhome2, she
found herself the object of unwanted attention by her team leader. She claims that her team
leader asked her several times if she would have dinner with him – offers that she refused. He
regularly asks her whether she has a boyfriend in her home country. She has found numerous small
gifts left in her desk drawers and lockers. Initially these were chocolates and single flowers. In the
last few weeks, she has found double movie tickets and fashion brochures with lingerie items
highlighted left on her desk. She claims to have numerous inappropriate and offensive emails that
have ‘sexy’ stories and jokes in them. Pree says that after she found the courage to tell the team
leader to ‘stop with the gifts’ he ‘un-invited’ her from a teams-drinks night. He told her that Indian
girls need to protect their reputation and it would be best if she stayed home.
When the journalist asked if she had reported the problem to her manager, Pree told him that she
‘didn’t know who to trust’. She is scared that if she ‘causes trouble’ at the Myhome2 office, she
might lose her accommodation and not be able to complete her studies. She hasn’t told the adults
at her accommodation as they would be angry if she made trouble for Myhome2. Pree says that
her studies have suffered because of the stress and worry, she isn’t eating properly and feels
fearful when she comes to the office. She describes herself as being ‘sick with worry’: not sleeping
well, she often has headaches.
The journalist asked Pree why she has ‘gone public’ now. She told him that it has come to her
attention, that she may she may not be the only one that is being treated this way by the team
leader. She felt that she needed to come forward to stop this happening to anyone else. She is
worried though that if their families back home hear about this, both she and the other girl might
be summoned home by their families in India.
Han’s and Anchara’s response
Both are devasted by this morning’s article. They are very concerned about Pree and the other
(unnamed girl). They are concerned that Pree hasn’t identified the team leader involved. In
addition to their concern about the girls’ welfare, they are worried about the impact on the
business. Myhome2 is built on trust: families entrust the care of their young people to Myhome2
and their screened-hosts. The damage to the business’ brand and reputation could be
considerable.
The CEOs have assigned you the task of investigating the incident and taking appropriate action to
mitigate the risk of a similar incident occurring in the future.

Part A: Role-play: Interview Pree

You must conduct an interview with Pree as part of your investigation. Your trainer/assessor will
assist you to organise a role-play with another student who will play the role of Pree.
You should prepare for the role-play by writing a list of questions that you intend to ask. Record her
responses on the form that you have prepared.

Part B: Risk assessment

You must undertake a risk assessment to determine the likelihood of a similar incident occurring in
the future. The risk assessment must also determine the likely impact and consequences to the
business in light of your findings from the investigation.
Use the risk assessment to identify measures that the business could take to reduce or eliminate
workplace bullying and harassment.
Evaluate the potential solutions and make a recommendation for the consideration of the CEOs.
Submit the risk assessment and accompanying information for assessment (approximately 600
words).

Part C: Code of conduct

You must write a code of conduct for Myhome2 that is designed to promote ethical behaviour and
compliance with the legislation that you identified in Part A.
The code of conduct must address the issues from the incident.
The code of conduct should reflect the organisation’s values and standards. By following the code of
conduct, you would expect that a culture of respect to be maintained and that employees will have a
clear understanding of ethical behaviour.
You should clearly articulate Myhome2’s expectations of employees.

Part D: Investigation
You must conduct desktop research to understand the significance of the incident, the potential
impact on the business and the individual involved (Pree and the team leader).
a) Identify two key pieces of legislation that are relevant to your analysis of the incident.
b) Explain how the legislation impacts the recommendations you are proposing.

c) Summarise how your leadership style in this incident is impacted by legislation.

d) Detail the methodology you followed to conduct your investigation.

Part E: Media statement

Prepare a media statement for use by various stakeholders including the CEOs and ‘Heads of’
departments. The audience for the media statement could include Myhome2 users (guests and
hosts), suppliers to the business, broader community and employees.
Write a statement for the media that:
 summarises the incident
 explains the actions that Myhome2 has implemented
 highlights how the business leaders are promoting ethical conduct
 promotes the organisations objectives, values and standards.

References:
You must include an appropriately formatted list of references with your assessment submission.
