1. Introduction
Organic compounds are compounds that contain elements essential to life. Carbon,
Hydrogen, and Oxygen are some of the elements needed by our body in order to survive. They
are also highly combustible, almost reacting to heat or fire at an instantaneous rate. Also, they
are carbon-containing compounds covalently linked to atoms of other elements. It is deeply
studied because of the catenating properties of carbon, making it the most versatile element as
it can form bonds and compound much more than all of the elements combined.
The materials and tools needed to conduct the said experiment are as follows:
Material Quanitity
Sucrose
Salt (KCl)
Water (H2O)
Napthalene
Petroleum Ether
Benzoic Acid
Combustion – the process of exposing the substance into flames to chemically transform the
components or the elements of the said substance into another form with a different chemical
composition.
Dissolution – the process of diffusing a substance, called a solute, into another medium or
substance responsible for diffusing the solute, called the solvent.
4. Place trace amounts of Sugar on 1st bottlecap and Potassium Chloride on the 2 nd.
5. Stimulate both bottlecaps over the flame.
2. Prepare two evaporating dishes containing ethanol and NaCl solution each.
2. Prepare two test tubes, each containing water and petroleum ether separately.
4. Repeat step 3, only this time, use NaCl and Benzoic Acid instead separately.
1. Results
The first sub-experiment done is the (_____________) wherein the heat reactivity of a
substance is tested. After doing the said experiment, it is further observed that the sucrose
reacted faster to a heat source, compared to Potassium Chloride, wherein it barely reacted to
the heat it was exposed into.
The second sub experiment, called (______) focused on the flammability of a substance. Based
on the conducted experiment, the ethyl(?) reacted to the flame and combusted instantaneously,
compared to the NaCl solution wherein it did not react with the flame.
