Indonesian relations with Thailand

Economic, Trade and Investment Cooperation

The main umbrella of bilateral cooperation activities between the two countries was the Joint
Commission forum which was formed after the signing of the RI-Thailand Economic and Technical
Cooperation Agreement in 1992. During the 6th meeting of the RI-Thailand Joint Commission which took
place on January 16-18, 2008 in Petchaburi, Thailand Several bilateral issues have been discussed that
will continue to be developed by the two countries, including the issues of: economy, trade,
transportation, education and culture, investment, fisheries, tourism, energy, technical cooperation, and
IMT-GT cooperation. At the previous joint meeting of the RI-Thailand Joint Commission (5th) in
Yogyakarta in 2003, it was agreed to change the name of the Joint Commission on Economic and
Technical Cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Thailand to The Joint
Commission between the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Thailand.

Socio-Cultural, Tourism and Education Cooperation

Even though there is no cultural agreement between Indonesia and Thailand that regulates socio-
cultural relations, the desire to improve relations with Thailand in this field is quite large. The fields that
are often worked on in this collaboration include the fields of education, science, student affairs, arts,
sports, religion, health, social environment, exchange of visits / invitations of figures and officials of
state, private and scouting.

Other Collaborations

Relations and cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense and security went well. This
is reflected in the high commitment to exchange regular visits between the leaders of the Armed Forces
of the two countries, joint exercises, seminars and information exchanges, as well as student exchanges
in the context of the Education Staff Command School. In addition, the two countries have an
agreement in combating drug trafficking under the umbrella of MoU cooperation between the Office of
the Narcotics Control Board of the Kingdom of Thailand and the National Narcotics Board of the
Republic of Indonesia on Cooperation in Controlling Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, their
Precursors and Chemicals, and Drug Abuse, between the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN)
with the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) of Thailand. The coordination and cooperation of the
Indonesian National Intelligence Agency (BIN) with the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) of Thailand is
also going well, where both parties maintain and try to improve closer relations.
Indonesia kamboja Establish Cultural Cooperation
Indonesia and Cambodia signed a memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation and tourism,
covering the mutuality of promoting each country's tourism potential to education and training. This
was said by Minister of Tourism and Culture, Jero Wacik and his colleague Minister for Culture and Arts
of Cambodia, Him Chem at the Kartika Plaza Hotel, Kuta, Bali, Thursday night. In the agreement it was
agreed that the two countries would prioritize cultural cooperation on world cultural heritage. It starts
from cultural research and development, education and training, cultural seminars and dialogues,
information exchange and development of world cultural heritage. "The governments of the two
countries agreed to put this into a short and medium term framework. Relations between the two
nations have been going on for a long time, around 1,000 years, and the legacy can still be seen today,"
said Wacik. If Indonesia has the Borobudur Temple as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, then
Cambodia also has a similar site called Angkor Wat, both of which originate in the ninth century AD.
"This historical and cultural relationship cannot and should not be forgotten. It's our wealth that must
continue to be developed together, and we agree to that," he said. The relic of this simple practice is the
name of the frangipani flower that is widely known in Indonesia, especially in Bali. While in Cambodia,
Java bananas are known to come from the archipelago. Three years ago, said Wacik, after returning
from a tour of ASEAN countries, President Yudhoyono said his idea that there are six countries that have
a large Buddhist heritage in ASEAN circles. "Pak Wacik, there are six countries in ASEAN. If it is packaged
properly, the results will also be good. Please follow up," said Wacik imitating President Yudhoyono's
message at that time about the potential of the joint heritage of the nations in ASEAN. Wacik directly
contacted five of his colleagues from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. The six
ministers had an initial understanding about the potential of world cultural heritage called the "Trail of
Civilization of Buddhism". "So, actually the pioneering of this MoU has been done for a long time. Today
we will witness together with the final," he said. One of the potential things to do is to make a joint film
between Indonesia and Cambodia, where Indonesia has been able to make 100 films per year, while
Cambodia only 19 films
Indonesian relations with China
In the era of President Soekarno, it became an important milestone in Indonesia-China friendly
relations. Liu Hong, in China and the Shaping of Indonesia, 1949-1965, revealed that at that time China
was like a lighthouse, pointing in what direction and how Indonesia should be built. The Chinese-style
development model is discussed by scholars. Stories about China are published in newspapers, and even
literary works, so that they touch widely in society. It is no exaggeration if that period is dubbed the
honeymoon period of Indonesia-China relations. Interaction and exchange not only occur at the elite
level, but also at the grassroots level. Relations between the two countries continued to show positive
developments, with the presence of Chinese Prime Minister Zhou En Lai at the Asian-African Conference
(KAA) on 18-25 April 1955. In the Bandung KAA "Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence" put forward by
China and co-sponsored by the Government of India and Myanmar, received support from the
participants. Indonesia and China also agreed to strengthen relations that were going well at that time,
marked by the signing of a treaty of friendship and an agreement on cultural cooperation on April 1,
1961. In the context of broader foreign relations, Indonesia was very important for China which at that
time was not a member of United Nations (UN). China, for Indonesia, is equally important, especially
after Indonesia decided to leave the United Nations in early 1965. The two formed a partnership in
building solidarity between the New Emerging Forces (NEFO) countries. This pattern of mutually
beneficial interactions continues to repeat itself in the evolution of bilateral relations. However, on
October 30, 1967 the two countries froze relations. After 22 years later, on February 24, 1989, when
President Soeharto met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen at the funeral of Emperor Hirohito in
Tokyo, the possibility of normalization of relations between the two countries was frozen. The
discussion continued at the Foreign Minister Ali Alatas and Qian Qichen's meeting on October 4, 1989 in
Tokyo. As a result, on 3 July 1990 the two foreign ministers signed the Joint Communiqué "The
Resumption of the Diplomatic between the Two Countries" in Beijing, followed by Prime Minister Li
Peng's visit to Indonesia while witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the
Restoration of Diplomatic Relations between the two countries on August 8, 1990. During the era
Soeharto, the normalization of Indonesian-Chinese relations in the early 1990s was very valuable for
China, which at the time was being denounced by the West after the Tiananmen incident. President
Soeharto paid a return visit on November 14-18, 1990, and witnessed the signing of the formation of the
Joint Commission on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation. The normalization of relations then
gradually opened relations between ASEAN and China, until finally in 1996 China became a full dialogue
partner of ASEAN.
Response :

1. Cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand is good and exemplary, because there are so
many positive values from the cooperation between the two countries
2. There are so many benefits from this cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand, from the
exchange of students from between the two to the State Security Division, it is very well
established relations with the exchange of regular visits between the leaders of the armed
forces between the two countries.
3. the advantage of cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand is that both countries have an
agreement in combating drug trafficking under the umbrella of MoU between the Office of the
Narcotics Control Board of the Kingdom of Thailand and the National Narcotics Board of the
Republic of Indonesia on the Cooperation in Controlling Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic
Substances, their Precursors and Chemicals, and Drug Abuse, between the National Narcotics
Agency (BNN) RI and the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Thailand. This is an example
of how communication between countries is very good and we really need to follow and study.
4. Cultural relations between Indonesia and Cambodia are also very good, it is seen because they
promote each other's culture in their respective countries and other countries.
5. Indonesia's close relationship with Cambojia seen in Indonesia has Borobudur Temple as the
largest Buddhist temple in the world, so Cambojia also has a similar site called Angkor Wat, both
of which originate in the ninth century AD. This historical and cultural relationship cannot and
should not be forgotten, this is our wealth that must continue to be developed together, and we
agree to it.
