ANALYSIS OF TRIP CUTTING BEHAVIOR OF JEEPNEYS

WITH RESPECT TO CSU-CARIG CAMPUS

INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Traffic flow is a theory developed based on the relationship between vehicles of online
traffic and signals from other vehicles, pedestrians and roads. Traffic flow is expressed as number
of vehicles using the particular road per unit duration of one hour. It is measured using traffic
cunts made for a particular duration at one point on the lane stretch. There may be fluctuations
in the amount made by calculating the time of a specific date. Traffic measurements are needed
to determine the waypoints at which congestion occurs. Traffic congestion is a road network
situation that occurs as usage increases, and is characterized by slow speeds, long trip timings,
and high vehicular queuing. It is a problem that is continually growing by time.
Tuguegarao City being the capital of the province of Cagayan, has experienced many
improvements in trade and business. The more people get involved in the business, the more
people get more vehicles.
The increase of vehicles is one of the reasons why the city suffers from traffic congestion.
Due to traffic congestion, PUJ drivers have the tendency to cut their designated route which is a
violation of their franchise. This behavior is called a trip cutting, it is when a driver who’s jeepney
has a franchise contract, say Centro, Tuguegarao to CSU-CARIG and vice versa route instead
intentionally refuses to complete a run along this route and turns around.

Statement of the problem

This study assesses current traffic conditions throughout the study area and focusing
on the effects of trip cutting practiced by PUV drivers, especially the members of jeepney
franchises. Moreover, this study will determine the answers to the following questions:
 Why do drivers resort to trip cutting? What conditions in this area affect this behavior?
 How often do drivers shorten routes?
 How many jeepney cut their trips per hour and per route?
 How do rationalize trip cutting behavior?

Objectives
The objectives of the research are:
 Characterize and evaluate the trip cutting tendencies of jeepney drivers;
 Identify the factors involving trip cutting to help address solutions for this
behavior;
 Study the effects of the supposed violation to the traffic congestion in the area;
and
 Communicate effectively with the right driver
Significance of the study
This paper focuses on analysis of trip cutting behavior of jeepneys with respect to CSU-Carig
Campus

In addition, the researchers, through this study, wish to share the benefits and
contributing factors in the progress and development to the following:
To the public transport operators. This study will give those insights on how to improve
their public utility vehicles to become more comfortable and reliable.
To the students or readers. The result of the study will help them to choose a more
feasible and convenient mode of public transportation.
To the future researchers. This research wants to benefit the future researchers who wish
to have a study related or somehow similar to this study by establishing replicable research
procedures and to create survey instruments for future studies on the related topics.
To the environment along the area. This would help to lessen the traffic congestion due
to the analysis of trip cutting behavior of jeepneys.
