COMMONLY USED MATERIALS FOR METAL INSERTS IN CARBON FIBER

Metal inserts in carbon fiber, also known as embedded inserts, are commonly made of stainless steel to
prevent corrosion. While aluminum is also used as metal inserts to reduce weight. Some carbon fiber
composites are highly influenced to (galvanic) corrosion at a certain temperature when in contact with
corrosive metals. And the carbon fiber being electrically conductive which makes it more influenced to
(galvanic) corrosion. The best solution is to use titanium alloys rather than aluminum and steel. Stainless
steel is also “less” influenced to galvanic corrosion.
2. INSERTING THE MONOCOQUE CHASSIS OF FORMULA 1 IN THE NOSECONE

(monocoque)

(body/monocoque)
The nose cone (the front part of the car that gives it downforce and improve aerodynamicsis) attached
to the front of the body/monocoque of the F1 car by nuts and bolts, inserted through pre-drilled holes.
The least possible attatching devices (could be a bolt) are used so that it is faster and easier to replace
them during pit stops.
