Writing Assignment #1

Three different topics that are essential to managing and running a business are good

leadership skills, the embracing and understanding of different cultures, and the implementation

of ethics. These matters work hand in hand and are fundamental managerial techniques that help

provide a strong foundation for your business to develop and evolve upon.

Leadership is important in a business setting because it requires someone to be able to

influence and support their workers to perform complicated tasks, while also maintaining a

professional and organized environment. In a Forbes article, “Leadership: It’s Not About You”,

by Amy Modglin, she discusses her own personal experience and what steps she took to grow as

a more effective leader. This resource added to my understanding of leadership by emphasizing

that being a leader isn’t about focusing on the status of your position, but rather fully supporting

your team and workers. Most often, some leaders are self-absorbed, but this strategy is proven

ineffective. Instead of approaching the accomplishments of your workers in an egotistical

manner, try to get to know your workers and recognize the hard work that they’re contributing to

your business. After all, the success of your workers guarantees the overall success of your

business.

Culture is important in a business setting because it provides a sense of unity and brings

employees and leaders closer to work together more productively. In a Harvard Business Review

spotlight series, “The Leader’s Guide to Corporate Culture”, by Boris Groysberg, Jeremiah Lee,

Jesse Price, and J. Yo-Jud Cheng, they review how culture should actually be encouraged in

business and how to properly manage it. This resource further expanded my understanding of

culture by listing and explaining the eight different features that culture is comprised of – caring,

purpose, learning, enjoyment, results, authority, safety, and order. These styles help determine

what actions and regulations are acceptable and what aren’t in a work setting. The implication of

culture allows a business to be extremely flexible to changes while also accommodating the

values of employees and leaders.

Ethics is important in a business setting because it involves approaching situations

honorably as well as trying to prevent discrimination in the work place. In a Huffington Post

article, “The Case for Ethics in Innovation”, by Seema Sehgal Kalra, he explains why

establishing the basics of ethics is an indispensable element to a business’s flourishment. This

resource broadened my understanding of ethics because it addressed that doing what is right and

proper not only increases the moral compasses of your workers, but is also beneficial to the

business. Implementing ethics into worker’s training gives them a stronger work ethic and

teaches them how to properly and honestly deal with situations or dilemmas that could arise.

Leadership, culture, and ethics are crucial elements to managing and running a successful

business. These three topics work together and are fundamental managerial techniques that help

provide a strong foundation for a business to develop and evolve upon.
