Why is the armature winding placed on

the rotor of a DC machine?

There are two field flux acting at a different angle to each other thus producing rotatory
effect. One is generated from field coils which are fixed to stationary part of the motor while
another is generated by armature winding on rotating part or armature. DC supply is given
to field and armature both which causes flux creation in both windings. As field is fixed, the
rotating effect is taken up by the armature (as a conductor carrying current tends to move
along a tangent when introduced in a magnetic field). That's why armature winding is put on
rotating part also called armature conductors which behave like a current carrying conductor
in a fixed magnetic field.

Armature winding in DC are low power coils as compared to three phase ac machines.
Three phase machines generally work in order of MVA’s so they need

1 Thick insulation for high voltage rating.

2 Better cooling.

3 more slip rings so power loss on the rings are more in 3 phase induction machines.

Hence in 3 phase machine armature winding is placed on stator.

But in DC machines the armature coil is of low voltage rating as compared to ac

machines so less insulation is needed and DC machine need only two slip rings so
losses are less hence armature winding in DC machines is placed on Rotor.

The armature winding of a dc machine is placed on the rotor to facilitate commutation i.e.to
convert the alternating voltage produced in the winding into direct voltage at the brushes.

Position of armature Armature rotates while field winding is Armature is stationary while
stationary magnetic field rotates
Speed control Speed is controlled by varying current Speed is controlled by varying
through armature winding frequency which is commonly
done with an adjustable
frequency drive control.
Self starting Yes No. It need some external

Carbon brush & Required Not required
Commutator
Repair cost Have many moving parts(brushes and a No moving part(brush or
commutator) which are expensive to commutator) hence rigid and
replace and has less life hence repair is long life and repair is cheaper
expensive
Applications where the motor speed needs to be Where more power required for
externally controlled i.e. small and domestic more period i.e. large and
