ANNOTATION
CRITIQUE PAPER

The Paper Man by John Kahrs was an Oscar’s Best Short Animated Film winner in
2013 as well as Annie’s Best Aimated Short Subject. The film was balck and white
animated it shows romantic comedy.

The video seems a typically love story that meets at the first time and fell in love
with each other, however this video reflects that kind of plot but shows environmental
issues. In the first scene, the man with a papers waits for the train then suddenly the
woman came, his paper flew into her face direclty to her lips. The paper has now color red
kiss marks, which signifies love. On the second scence, he was working until he saw the
girl so he made a strategy which is to use the papers to make a plane. He tries to throw it
on the window, but after how many attempts, he failed because he already throwed all of
the papers including the paper with kissmark. This shows that he is dedicated to be get
the girl’s attention. It reminds me of the qoute, “Love at First Sight” which is presented in
the film. Even though he already used all the papers, the boos/manager gave him another
pile of papers. He was also scolded without a word. This shows a dertermination to get
what he wants. Then he thowed the paper plane again. It is sweet but non-environmental
friendly. The papers was stucked on the alley. The manager/boss caught him again, he
went outside when he saw the girl on the ground floor already without the boss/manager’s
permission. This is not proper he might fired after what he did. However, it was sweet.

The Paper Man gives me mixed emotion including happiness and somewhat sullen
on how the paper represents a love story becomes nothing after use which is not good in
our environment nowadays because ewe are facing climate change. But I know that the
author just made it fo a purpose which is to showcase a love story in a short period of
time.

INTRODUCTION

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) 11 data shows a 3.6% increase
in the number of young Dabawenyas ages 15-24 who have become pregnant, from 25%
in 2013 to 28.6% in 2018. The Davao region is the highest increase in the number of
motherhood rate compared to the Zamboanga Penisula, Socsksargen, and Caraga. Both
Northern Mindanao and the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao experienced a
decline in the number of motherhood rate by 2.7% and 4.9%, respectively. Report also
added that lawyer Romeo Cabarde, a family planning of the Philippines board member
exclaimed that the statistics on teenage motherhood and abuse in the Davao region is
already at an alarming stage (Carillo, 2012).

The National Demographic and Health Survey of the Philippines Statistics

Authority (NDHS-PSA) lists half a million Filipino adolescents aged 15-19 to have begun
childbearing in 2017 alone. Experts say that early childbearing exposes young mothers
and their children to multiple health risks, since the bodies of young mothers are not fully
ready for pregnancy and childbirth. About 10% of teenage pregnancies end in miscarriage
or still birth, while 2.5% of these pregnancies result in neonatal deaths. Early pregnancy
and childbirth also pose social and economic risks, such as reduced probability of school
completion, and therefore, reduced likelihood of gainful employment (Mendoza, 2019).

Only in the past 20 years has the teenage birth rate decoupled from overall
fertility trends, becoming a distinct phenomenon by falling while the overall birth rate
remained fairly steady. This policy success has been attributed largely to proximal
predictors- decreased levels of sexual activity but especially increased use of
contraception among youth- yet increases in overall age at first birth and rising female
educational attainment may also be distal predictors. Teenage motherhood and poverty
are closely intertwined: in 2011-2012, nearly half of families with teenage mothers who
had infants lived below the federal poverty line. At the same time, 56% of infants in
poverty lived with a mother who had been a teenager at either own or an older sibling’s
birth. These statistics are important for social policy because efforts to help teenage
mothers could improve the lives of many poor families in Canada (Santelli & Melnikas,
2010)

This study aims to hear the teenage mother's insights through life. In this study we
can identify their perspectives in life and how they manage to accept judgement and
criticism on the environment. And also, this study intents to give courage and support in
finishing school despite of the situations. Identifying their positive outlooks through life

REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
The women described themselves as being hesitant when they become mothers,
somewhat excited while at the same time unsure and anxious (Aparicio, 2016).

Paniaguia & Walker (2012) state that daughters of teenage mothers are significantly
more likely to give birth as teenagers themselves.

The negative outcomes in Teenage Motherhood are eviction, loneliness, rejection,

tough parenthood, non-stop demands and responsibilities, financial difficulties, lack of
supportive relationships, low educational achievements, less stable employment and
repeated pregnancies (Bah, 2016).

According to Aquino (2014), new technology can lead to new sexual activities and
new ways of meeting sexual partners that could result to higher risk of pregnancy.

THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
Intersectionality theory suits in this paper which recognize the multiple intersections in the
life of a woman that includes their race, gender, skin tone, accent, education level,
migration status, languang and other situations. (Collins, 1990).Each characteristic of
individual’s identity affects their decision making. For example, some African teenage
mothers who are at the same time refugees, fom low socioeconomic background and with
loe levels of education, these multiple identities need to be understood when examining
experiences of early pregnancy and early motherhood among this group of migrants.

Evolutionary life-history theory is a novel of STEARNS that provides insight why do

social situations increase like teenage motherhood by exploring how reproductive timing
relates to risk and hesitation. (Stearns, 1992). Different individuals living in different
environments will depend greatly in the limitations that affect their reproduction, with the
individual’s decision making will be greatly influence their decision making (Voland, 1998).
STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Adolescent Motherhood is a complex problem with no single solution. This is because
once a young people begin having sex it becomes hard to stop or reduce their sexual
behavior. However becoming a teen mother is tough task. For example as a student,
having baby can interfere with studies. After class teenage mother has to return
immediately to her caring responsibility (Bah, 2016). Many parents aware about their
child/ren’s relationship status and giving full trust to them which tends to have an early
practice of sexual intercourse.

This study needs to examine the problems the teenagers encounter after becoming
mothers. This study also aims to know the perspective of teenage mothers about their
new caring responsibility.

RESEARCH QUESTION

1. How does Adolescent Motherhood affects their studies?

2. Does teenage mothers regret getting pregnant
3. What does it feel to become an Adolescent mother?

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will use Qualitative Descriptive Design. It is a widely cited research
tradition and has been identified as important and appropriate for research
questions focused on discovering the who, what, and where of events or
experiences and gaining insights from informants (Neegaard, 2009).
PURPOSIVE
SAMPLING
The participants of this study consist 5 Adolescent Mother, a public school
student or drop-out. Age ranges from 13-19 years old and currently living in the city
of Davao. Another reason for choosing the participants is the willingness to
participate in this study

DATA GATHERING
PROCEDURE

Before the interview, we will sent a letter to the authority and to the parents or
guardians of the participants to allow us to conduct this study. First procedure is
the pre-interview stage whereas the participants will be contact first. Second, the
warm-up stage to make the chosen participants more comfortable. Third is the
main interview stage where the interview questions will be asked. And the last is
the Closing Stage to thank and acknowledge the chosen participants. (Barrot &
Sipacio, 2016)
DATA ANALYSIS

Qualitative data refers to non-numeric information such as interview transcripts,

notes, video and audio recordings, images and text documents.

This study will use Phenomenological Analysis. It will use a combination of

conducting interviews, reading documents, watching videos, or visiting places that
aims to understand the participants’ own perspective.

Phenomenology is a method that can provide the investigator with insights (van
Manen, 1990, p. 7). According to Creswell (2007), a phenomenological study
“describes the meaning for several individuals of their lived experiences of a
concept or a phenomenon” (p. 57). In other words, it focuses on describing a
phenomenon that all the participants have experienced.

REFLECTION ESSAY

Concept Paper is a project or research proposal. It consist of Introduction that indicate the global,
national and local setting. Thesis Statement which state the aim of a study. Review of Related Literature
whereas previous studies and backgrounds are reflected that is related to the topic. And Methodology
that consist the number of participants, data analysis and procedures.

Last time, the concept paper oral defense was a fast approach which made me/us nervous. This is
the first time (as a new senior high school student) we faced this kind of oral recitation. Throughout the
discussion we are only given a short time. During the defense we were asked about our concept paper
especially our theories. One of the panel corrected out hard copy, and we found out that we have to
revise.

On this paper, we fully revised the concept paper. And we really hope that on this time, it is correct.

DISCUSSION
Substance abuse is the most common social calamity practiced during
adolescence. People’s lives can be influenced by lifestyle, level of education, health,
social relations, economic status, and religious belief. Adolescence is a crucial and
difficult period of life. At this particular age, individuals like to get independence. The
studies show that 5% of the students consumed alcohol. The volatile substance is a
common substance abused by the students. An Iranian study (2015) indicated that when
you lived alone, the prevalence of substance abuse is higher. There are numerous social
risk factors for substance abuse and one of them is exposure to a friend who abuses
substances. This may be due to adolescent years when they are more likely to adopt the
influences from their peers. Students prefer to abuse sedative and stimulant alone while
drinking and smoking with friends. Majority of the students are abusing stimulant, which is
supported by a Nigerian study. Khat (Catha edulis) is a common herbal stimulant use in
Arabian Countries. 21.5% is the prevalence of khat among secondary school students. It
is a socially acceptable norm in these regions to chew khat with friends and family
members. Study-related adjustment, peer pressure, psychological and environmental
factors are the common cause of substance abuse (Aklog et al 2013). Many students
believe that the stimulation of their brain with substances helps them to study properly
and overcome academic pressure to meet the deadline

The data found in this study shows that stimulants were the most common abused
substance in Al-Dhahirah Governorate due to many causes, the most common one is
studying problems among the abusers.
RECOMMENDATION
The school nurse can play an essential role in the prevention of substance abuse.
She/he may cover both health and educational goals. Students nowadays face family
crises, homelessness, poverty, and violence which will raise the possibility for a student to
abuse substances. In the help with the coordination of institutions, government, agencies,
and sponsors can eliminate this social calamity.

WRITTEN REPORT
INTRODUCTION
Teenage Pregnancy is a global issue, which persists to disturb governments, parents, the
system of education and concerned persons. According to Kaplowtz (2006), teenage
pregnancy is a pregnancy of a woman at an early age, in spite of being married or legally
an adult. UNFPA (2002) suggests that teenage pregnancy is a stage of becoming a
mother usually within the ages of 13-19. The purpose of this study will be to defined
teenage pregnancy as the pregnancy of any girl between the ages of thirteen and
nineteen and any boy in the same ages who has impregnated a female of any age.
The United Population Fund (2013) reported that out of 7.3 million births, 2 million
are girls who were below 14 years old. Guttmacher Institute (2006) revealed that each
year almost 75,000 females between 15-19 years old became pregnant. In West and
Central Africa, 129 births per 1000 teens became pregnant. In Belize, each year there are
7 million girls below 18 years old who give birth. (UPF, 2013).
In the life of a woman, pregnancy is a very important, happy, and exciting period.
Unlike in the teenage mothers can face difficulties as the stress of revealing the
pregnancy to parents and society, plus the moving on beyond the worry and shame can
be nerve-racking. The baby and the children of teenage parents are prone to experience
health, social, and emotional problems as there will be an increased risk for complications
like premature labor, socioeconomic and domestic abuse problems may spread (Nuble,
2014).
METHOLODGY

This study employs a qualitative design since it is allowed for the exploration of the
teenagers’ perception of this issue in a rural community in Trinidad. Cross-Sectional
Design involves the collection of data at one point in time (Polit & Beck, 2004). Research
design can be used for descriptive, explanatory, and exploratory studies (Rubin & Babbie,
2007)
Population Sample
The population was Teenagers, both Male and Female with no requirement in terms
of ethnicity. Most of them fell into one or two racial groups. The African and East Indian
descents. There are 20 participants, 10 males, and 10 females. It was divided into 4
groups. 1st group (5 females) wasn’t pregnant nor have any children. 2nd group (5 males)
was never had a baby nor a father. 3rd group (5 females) who have a baby or currently
pregnant. And in the last group, 5 males were fathers.
The setting of the study
The population of Toco in St. David County is 8,134 (Population Cencus, 2000). It’s
mixed, these are young, adults, teenagers, elderly and very young children like toddlers
and newborns. Each participant was chosen based on a single commonality. One
interview per participant.
Prior permission was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the University of the West
Indies, Public Health Observatory’s Office, and Eastern Regional Health Authority.
Consent was given to each participant together with his/her parent and the objectives
were explained. No names were required to maintain confidentiality. They were also told
that it is voluntary.
Selection of the tool
This study also used Self-reports, it is a method of collecting data that involves a
direct report of data by the participant like questionnaire (Polit and Beck, 2004). In this
study, self-report was conducted through personal and semi-structured interviews where
open-ended questions were asked. Interview was considered because it gives information
and further discussion on questions. The content was informed by works of literature as
well as consultation with some nursing experts.
Interview Questions
The interview is composed of three parts, these are awareness and opinion,
knowledge and education, and personal experience. A total of 10 questions were asked.
There were 5 questions about the awareness and opinions, 3 questions for knowledge
and education, and 2 questions concerning their personal experience.
Procedures for Data Collection
Questionnaire or Interview is an example of the Self-report, it is a method of
collecting information or data that involves a direct report of information of the participant.
The data collection plan of this study was relatively simple because it involves self-report,
besides, the data were gathered using the cross-sectional method at one point in time.
Data Analysis and Organization
The Plan used to analyze this data using the editing analysis style, through this
style the researchers act as interpreters who explore using the data in searching for the
meaningful segments and units (Polit & Beck, 2004).
RESULTS
Analysis of data is an active and interactive process, especially at the interpretative
end of the continuous analysis style (Polit & Beck, 2004). In analyzing the data, the
response of the participants was documented in verbatim, it is an effort to be as accurate
as possible.
Awareness of Teenage Pregnancy among Peers
(1st Question: Do you know within your age group of people who are having
babies?)
Among 20 interviews, most of the teenagers were fully aware that at their age
group, teenage pregnancy has already occurred, except to the 3 participants from the first
and second group who were unaware. A 16-year-old boy said that there were several girls
in his school who were already pregnant and one of them is his classmate. He added that
some of them do throw away their child. A girl said that teenage pregnancy had already
spread because it is always on the news.
Unprotected Sex among Teenagers
(2nd Question: Have you ever had unprotected sex?)
A total of 11 participants who had unprotected sex, while there were only 9 who
didn’t. The participants from the third and fourth group revealed that they had unprotected
sex, the reason behind was the damage of the condom during the sexual intercourse. And
a girl from the first group spilled that she once had unprotected sex.
(3rd Question: Who do you think supports teenagers during pregnancy?)

child nor an expectant parent. Most of the participants reported that parents, especially

sex.
Education from Healthcare Services on Effects of Pregnancy
(5th Question: Do you have sufficient education from the health care services
about the effects of pregnancy?)
Most of the teenagers reported that they didn’t receive sufficient information about it and
only few who have received, and they’re the parents and the family member who worked
in the various health centers. A participant replied that she didn’t come into the health
centers because she felt afraid that nurses wouldn’t be confidential and she is sure that
her mother will ask her if she is pregnant. Another participant said that she didn’t go to the
health center to find out because they will judge her is he asked some questions about
teenage pregnancy. This means that the participant is not willing to go to the health
centers because she was afraid that the staff would assume that she’s pregnant. One
teenager revealed that Teenage pregnancy should be thought of as the effects of this
worldwide issue.
Understanding of Reproductive Health
(6th Question: Do you know and understand what reproductive health is?
Out of 20 participants, 80% of them had a piece of knowledge about reproductive

first group said that her parents have never told about it however she received a tip, it is
better to abstain from sex than using condoms. One boy in the second group knew about
a condom because of his friends. One girl said revealed that she knew a lot about

mistake, sometimes the pressure from their partners and might break-up, plus the bullying
and teasing since she’s a student and it feels frustrating, and the teachers who doesn’t
treat them in a good way and talk about them.
Socioeconomic Factors
(10th Question: Do poor socioeconomic factors influence early sexual activity?)
16 participants agreed that early sexual activities often led to teenage pregnancy.
One teenager in the first group said that girls exchange their dignity for money and bought
nice clothes, weave, and all kinds of things. After several times of doing the act, they
ended up getting pregnant.
DISCUSSION

The findings of the high awareness of teenagers about teenage pregnancy agree
with Ibeh & Ikechebelu in the year 2002 who also indicated that teenagers in Nigeria were
aware of teenage pregnancy.
Previous literature on the scale of unprotected sex among teenagers has been
strong on both sides, some studies found out that there are lesser and more teenagers
were having unprotected sex. Most of the teenagers in this study admitted that they had
unprotected sex at least once. It can be compared to the study of the Uganda Ministry of
Health (2002) that 2/3 of unmarried teenagers have unprotected sex.
The results from this study showed that most of the teenagers were supported by
their parents, especially their mothers, who provide support during and after the
pregnancy. 81% of all mothers were supported during the pregnancy of their child
(Guttmacher Institute, 1998). Parallels to the studies done by De Villiers & Kekesi (2004)
which showed that during and after the pregnancy, teenagers were supported by their
families.
However, Luoung, (2014) didn’t agree and gave a grim future for teenage mothers, contrary to the
results as the teenagers strongly believed that life can be successful after the pregnancy.

REFLECTION (Written Report)

Abusing substances such as Drugs will lead to different problems, thus it is a

worldwide issue. For some reason, the study shows that students abuse drugs
because of school-related problems.

While reading this document for the first time, I already doubt if this type of
paper qualifies to the proper standard. Luckily, it is. Reading gives me boredom,
why? Because all I saw was just letters and some charts. I forced myself to read
the document to finish at an early period. Unexpectedly, I learned and discover a
lot of information about the theme, which is drugs. Drugs are timely in our
country, and I could say that it’s quite similar to ours. The most difficult situation
I’ve encountered was my time management, I procrastinated. To prevent
plagiarism, you must add citations in every data you’ve gathered. I asked my
teacher about it, she said that as long as the reference is present there’s no
problem. However, I thanked God it was finished early. I received good feedback
from a professional which gives me an urge to continue and do better, Thank you
Maam.

In other words, this activity helps me to have advanced learning, which may
help me in my future tasks. I thanked God who help me even tho I procrastinate,
friends who helped me, the paper which leads me to this situation, Dictionaries
that explain profound words and especially to the person who guided me in my
struggles.

REFLECTION (Academic Writing)

Teenage Pregnancy is the most ‘common’ issue, that was my classmates

said. Yes, it is, but we chose it not because we can’t think of a better issue, but
because it is timely. We are in this stage, it’s either we fall or we stand. It’s either
we’ll undergo or we can educate.

During writing a summarization, for the second time; I’ve learned again. The
first document I read was amazing, the content was unexpected. It’s not a pro or
cons to the issue, but neutral. The research paper is interesting, especially the
study was made in our country, Philippines. But sadly, the study was already
taken by my groupmate, Maica Royo, so I decided to switch to another research.
The struggles I’ve encountered was being lazy. This issue was done outside the
country which reflects on the negative impacts of teenage pregnancy. The setting
of the study is in Nigeria. It shows that most of the teenagers have a piece of
knowledge about this issue with the help of broadcast media.

I think rewriting a summarization is a bonus. Although it’s not easy it gives

me other information. We chose this study because it is easy, we can directly find
participants on our research soon plus I had a classmate who was a now happy
mother.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY OF
PLAGIARIMS

It feels so good when we were recognize when we did something good, even
it is as small as seed or big as apple. But if you weren’t recognize even your
output was great, you’ll be sad. Plagiarism is a type of crime where individuals
owns or uses someone’s ideas, information, concepts, arguments or statements
without their permission and without proper citations.

When I did my written report, I searched various documents online. Most of

them are journals. Before reading, I validated the paper with the help of our
Teacher, Ms. Daisy M. Corpuz, and thankfully it was approved. I highlighted
some important information on the journal. The paper was journal for nurses, so
it used IMRAD format, which mean Introduction, Methodology, Results and
Discussion. At first it was hard to find the in-text-citation because it use AMA
Style rather than APA style. Citing sources will give credit to the author, promote
scholarly writing, and help the readers to locate information.

However, along the process, I found out that it’s not necessary for AMA type
of PDF to have In-text-citation as long as it has a number covered by brackets
and reference list. Another lesson that I learned is to annotate, which is helpful to
better paraphrase the text.
