‘American Electric Power D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant STRUDL Reference Guide Page 1 STRUDL Reference Guide Delmer H. Schultz Purpose: The purpose of this guide is to provide potential solutions to various issues With using the E/PD STRUDL program which was used to create the 100+ calculations that qualify the Large Bore Class I systems at the D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant and are known as the LBPRP Calculations. This guide will deal primarily with pipe support ‘models and issues. However, since these are integrated runs, pipe stress issues will receive some treatment as well. Scope: The scope of this guide will include modeling techniques, key words for searching STRUDL Input/Output files and troubleshooting hints for solving errors, ‘warnings and apparent overstresses encountered in STRUDL outputs. * Reference; E/PD STRUDL User’s Manual (Four Volumes) Topic/Subtopic Page | Reference * | Comments no. Cook Nuclear Power Plant STRUDL Reference Guide Page 2 Modeling Techniques: Supports It is always wise to make a hand drawn model of the support with joint mmbers, member numbers and dimensions before starting your model file. Use existing files as much as possible to get the correct commands for your model. 1, Joints: ‘Try to keep the joint numbers in a logical sequence. © Use the ‘Mesh Coordinates with shift” method rather than Joint Coordinates. © Use ‘inches® rather than ‘feet’. In STRUDL a ‘UNITS’ command stays in force until it is changed. So at any place in the file you can search backwards for ‘unit? and find out what units are being used at that point. . Members: «In general, always make the incidences in the positive X, Y and Z directions. ‘Then use the axis sketch (page ) to determine what Beta angle is needed for each member. ‘© Use a logical number sequence for members that you want to qualify. (angles, channels, wide flanges, plates etc.) «Plate properties Plate members may be input as “Non-Standard Members” giving all the cross-sectional properties, which can be obtained from Cale. DC-D-12-MSC-7. 3. Welds: © Rigid Member Welds (Page 10.51.4 to 17) ‘The Beta angle is needed to orient the weld configuration with the member axis system. Be careful, because the member axis system may be changed due to Beta angles given under the ‘Constants’ command. The qualification for a Rigid Member Weld will use the highest forces and ‘moments available for the member. This may be conservative as the highest moments may not be at the welded end. The use of a very short (01”) ‘member will fix this problem. © Member End Welds (Page 10.8 to 35) This command will result in a more accurate evaluation of joint that is only partially welded. There are tables of weld configurations for use with Standard steel sections or you may calculate the properties of a unique configuration and input them as user defined properties. In the recovery file, the specifie members must be listed for Member weld inputs. «Support Joint Welds (Page 10.51.18 to 24) ‘These are more complicated and generally not used. ‘© Weld qualification for Angles ‘American Electric Power D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant STRUDL Reference Guide Page 3 STRUDL will qualify an angle weld using the two out-of-plane moments and the largest ‘Z’ (I/c), whereas they don’t occur at the same point for both moments, So this conservatism may be removed with a separate hand calculation. 4, Concrete Anchors (Hilti’s): The STRUDL tables of allowable loads for qualifying base plates have single bolt and 4 bolt plates with original Hilti’s. These allowables are conservative because they take into account both the anchor bolts and the plate thickness and give an overall Interaction Ratio (IR). Thus when an anchor fails in the integrated run, a finite element analysis of the baseplate will often pass it. ‘When plates do not fit the configuration of square 4-bolt plates, they are usually modeled using stick model plate elements to connect the attached ‘member to the each anchor. ‘When a support is skewed in the global coordinate system, i.e. R2 is not a multiple of 90 degrees, you will need to add a member coordinate input for the baseplate and the command ‘JABC 1 will need to be added to the recovery file. “American Electric Power D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant STRUDL Reference Guide Key words for searching STRUDL Input/Output file In general, STRUDL files may be edited and/or searched in any word proces: Page 4 ig program. TSE (dos), Winedit, Word, Wordpad, Notepad will all bring up a file and allow searching and edit '&. ‘cntrl”F” will bring up a search window in all these programs. ‘cntrl”"L’ for dos and ‘next’ for the windows programs will repeat the search.
