Installing the Symbol MC50/MC70 Scanner is a multi step process.

Step 1: Installing Microsoft Activesync

Step 2: Naming the Scanner

Step 3: Creating a Partnership

Step 4: Installing the Software.

Step 5: Registering the software

Step 6: Telling Eclipse where the data is to be found.

Steps 1 to 3 are common to all Windows pocket PC devices.

If you already have Microsoft Activesync v4.5 or later installed you can omit step 1.

1.1 Microsoft Activesync

You will need to install Microsoft ActiveSync V4.5, which is supplied with the scanner or it can be
downloaded from

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx

This should be installed before the barcode reader is connected to the PC.

1.2 Naming the Scanner

When you are using more than one scanner with a workstation, you should give them names to easily
identify them..

1.6 Setting Eclipse's Path to the Data

'Eclipse Needs to know where Activesync is going to place the data.

Since you may have other devices on your system, Eclipse cannot work this out.

On your desktop PC you need to Run the 'Scanner Selector' program which is normally found in the
Programs>Navigator Systems group on your start menu.

The display shows the name you gave the scanner 'fred' in this case, the type of device - ie (MC50),
and the storage location defined by activesync.

Select the device that you are using and then press 'save selected for Eclipse' and close the window.

1.7 Creating A Shortcut

On the MC50/70 you can place the program shortcut directly into the drop down start menu.

To do this:

select the start menu>setting

Click on the 'menus' icon.

Place a tick in the box next to ECLScanIF

2 Using The Eclipse Scanner Software

The equipment list scanner software should now be on the drop down start menu on the Symbol
scanner as ECLscanIF

In this section we show you how to use the scanner.

Before scanning you must remember to

select the equipment list you are going to be working on

Select whether the equipment is going out to the customer or back into stock.

Because the system is a batch based arrangement, you can work on multiple lists and so after say
scanning in one show, you can select a new list and scan that show out.

When you import the data into eclipse it will process the data in order and select the equipment lists
accordingly.

2.1 Selecting The Equipment List

Press 'Select' to choose the equipment list

2.4 Manual Entry

If a barcode cannot be read, the barcode number can be entered by pressing the 'Manual' button,
then a screen will appear allowing numeric barcodes to be entered.

If alphanumeric barcodes are used the Symbols inbuilt screen keyboard can be used.

to bring up the on screen keyboard press the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen

This launches the keyboard

to close the keyboard press the icon again

2.5 Typecodes

If the barcode corresponds to a typecode such as 20m TRS cables rather than to a specific piece of
equipment,
a screen will displayed asking you to enter the quantity and then press the OK button

2.6 Other Scanning Functions

· You can change between lists by selecting a new list at any time , all further scans will then
be associated with the new list
· You can change from sending 'In' or 'Out' at any time
· You can remove items by highlighting them in the 'scanned' box and pressing the '-' button

2.7 Uploading to Eclipse

When you've finished scanning press the 'save' button.

Using The Eclipse Scanner Software 21

(note: the save button can be pressed any time whilst scanning – the status bar changes from
'unsaved scans' to 'All scans saved'. The device automatically saves any scans every 5 minutes to
protect against data loss from the battery going flat.

Warning: if the device is left flat for an extended period this data will be lost as will the program and
the MCxx will require reloading with the software. Get in the habit of leaving the scanner in the
charging cradle when not in use.

Put the Scanner in the cradle and the MC50 will synchronise with the PC

NOTE: if you are using multiple scanners with one PC you must select the scanner using the Scanner
Selector Utility. See using multiple scanners with one PC below

Open an Equipment List in Eclipse

Press the 'Import' button

Once the list has been imported and any problems dealt with then you can clear the scanners
memory. The memory is not automatically emptied in case any problems occur during the hotsync.

Press the 'Clear' button to clear the scanner

Start scanning again

2.8 Hints & Tips

To save time for the person doing the picking the palm reference number can be printed on the
equipment list.

This can be printed by installing a barcode font such as the 3 of 9 font which can be found as
freeware on the internet and using crystal reports,
place the palm ID on the report and set the field to the barcode font.

A free barcode font can be found at http://www.barcodesinc.com/free-barcode-font/

The field to insert into the report is EQLISTS.Eql_no

If the scanner goes completely flat, a new partnership will have to be set up between the PC and the
MC50/70. This means completely reinstalling everything apart from activesync. The device will last
several days in standby mode however it is best to get in the habit of leaving the symbol in its cradle.

3 Advanced Topics

This section deals with advanced users who wish to use multiple scanners with one pc or are using
terminal services clients.

3.1 Multiple Scanners on one PC

If you have multiple scanners in the warehouse, but only one PC you will need to select which
scanner has the information you require.

Before importing the list, run the scanner selector program, select the device that you are using and
then press save selected for Eclipse and close the window.

The display shows the name you gave the scanner 'fred' in this case, the type of device - ie (MC50),
and the storage location defined by activesync.

3.2 Multiple PC's with one scanner

Microsoft have limited Activesync to only support two PC's to connect to a single PDA.

If you need to use more than two pc's with the scanner there are several programs on the internet that
overcome this limitation such as

Syncmanager from www.kelbran.com

or

Manypartners from www.mydocsunlimited.com

Advanced Topics 25

3.3 Using with Terminal Services

Do Not try to install activesync on the terminal server machine!

It is not possible to make activesync work directly with terminal services as the USB port cannot be
virtualised.

instead:

Create a share of the synchronised files folder of the MC50 on the client machine. For instance share

C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\My Documents\Scanner1 my documents\ as scandir

Create a login script or batch file to map the share scandir as a drive such as Z: under terminal
server

Setting the environment variables in the Terminal server session for the current user to PALM=Z:\
and QUESTOR=Z:\

this will allow eclipse to read the data files as if they were on the server.

If you require multiple Scanners to work with a terminal server client , you may need a third party
program such as

Mightysync3 from www.mydocumentsunlimited.com

this allows you to define the directory that all the scanners use to synchronize from so that only one
directory needs to be mapped.

3.4 Data Formats

When the 'import from portable reader button is pressed, the program looks for a file in the directory
pointed to by the environment variable PALM

Eclipse loads the file xmove.cdd.

This contains the list of scanned barcodes. The file format is designed to be compatible with the
earlier palm based scanners which used the CASL conduit.

The format of the xmove.cdd file is:

<header>
which comprises of the following 9 lines

© 2007 Navigator Systems Limited

which consists of the barcodes in the following format

0x00000000,0x0000,"Barcode(prefixed by * for typecodes)","Quantity for typecodes","O or I followed

by the Palm reference number of the equipment list"

Where the quantity field is always zero for item level barcodes.

In this sample file

0x00000000,0x0000,"*998",56,"O9765"

The four lines of barcodes show:

Palm Reference 2133, quantity of 0, Barcode 10 being scanned Out

Palm Reference 6177, quantity of 0, Barcode 20 being scanned In
Palm Reference 3129, quantity of 0, Barcode 30 being scanned Out
Palm Reference 9765, quantity of 56, Typecode 998 being scanned Out

After an import a file short.cdi is created and synced to the device. This has a list of the barcodes that
correspond to typecodes rather than individual item
barcodes.

the format of the short.cdi file is:

<header>
which comprises of the following 7 lines

#CDBID: CASL
#MAJREV: 2
#MINREV: 0

This indicates that barcodes 998 and 999 are typecodes and the user should be prompted to enter the
quantity of items.

The last file that is found on the Symbol is reg.cod which contains the registration code for the
scanner.

This code is unique to the scanner and is tied to the unique serial number of the device.
