Effect on Players
and
Repercussions

Effect on Consumers
Effect on Buisiness

How sports businesses operate:

Modern sports-oriented businesses gain most of their income from fan
engagement whether in terms of direct ticket sales or from sales on sports
related merchandise.

Emphasis on long-term fans and fan support:

As a consequence of the way they operate, sports-oriented businesses
require commitment form fans to maintain profitibality. To ensure this
commitment corporations try to cultivate a culture of loyal supporters.

10
Methods of advertising:
In order to gain the substantial support they seek,
corporations often design sports advertisements to
appeal to more emotional tendencies such as
nationalistic or moral ones.

Collaboration with governments:

Enticed by the potential for profit and political favor, even governmental bodies
wordwide have come to collaborate with businesses on sports related ventures,
often both to the benefit and detriment of sports.

11
Effect on Players

Commercialization of players:
As players take an integral role in determining the value of a sport or brand,
corporations often treat them similar to products to be cultivated
or exchanged.

Pressure to perform:
Players face constant pressure to attain more success and wealth for
themselves and their patrons as their performance often reflects on their
profitability.

Pressure to create personas:

Players are often pushed to portray themselves in a more marketable
manner. Presenting ideal personas that may differ drastically from their
true selves.

Politicization of sports:
Due to the influential nature of players they are often called upon to
support groups or ideals in the hope of garnering support from their 12
fans.
Effect on Consumers

Manipulation:
Businesses regularly use sports and famous athletes to manipulate
consumers into adhering to desired trends, leaving unwary consumers
easily manipulated.

Aspirations:
The often idealized manner in which modren sports are shown may
leave consumers with unrealistic or unhealthy expectations if not
entirely shape their goals.

13
14
Celebrity worship:
A common consequence of the treatment of athletes in modern society is
an increase in the negative phenomenon of celebrity worship, with it often
being further worsened by businesses seeking to profit from it.

Gang mentality:
Another potential result is the breeding of divisive gang like sentiments as
supporters of certain brands come to view those of rivaling brands with
disdain as well as colectively reaffirming and exasperating their belief in
their own.

Work ethic, challenges, setting goals, and reaching goals.

SOME QUESTIONS WE SHOULD ASK OURSELVES BEFORE ENGAGING WITH
SPORTS:

WHAT IS OUR MAIN GOAL IN WATCHING THIS SPORT?

WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE?
HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN WATCHING A GAME? (EXCITED, BORED, WHY?)
THINK ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETE, WHAT ARE THE REASONS YOU LIKE
THIS PERSON? (THEIR QUALITIES).
AND HOW DO THEY INSPIRE YOU IN BEING A BETTER ATHLETE/PERSON?
HOW DOES ATHLETICS MAKE YOU A BETTER STUDENT OR WORKER?
