ABSTRACT

The Department of Education’s K to 12 program has already produced two batches of

senior high school graduates since its initial implementation back in 2012. Despite that, many

students and parents are still not sure how senior high school help in the education system

and why is it important to undergo this program. This qualitative research examines the 2 nd

year students of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) and how the senior high school

curriculum helped them in their first year in college. Data were collected over a week period

using survey questionnaires. Results indicate that the senior high program is quite effective in

various ways. One of these is its role in housing the students to mature for some time before

facing a bigger challenge in life as a college student. Another is its importance in making the

college adjustment much easier for the students. Despite its efficacy, the researchers still find

some holes in the program. The number of units students have to take in college should be

lessened if they have already taken up these units in senior high school.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

In Chapter I, it contains the introduction, background, conceptual framework, statement of the

study, significance, scope of the study and the definition of terms.

Introduction

Education is an essential part of every person’s life. It helps us prepare for the future and

be qualified for a certain job. This is why the Department of Education (DepEd) made the

historic implementation of the K-12 program. The added two-year Senior High Track aims to

equip its students with knowledge and skills that will help them prepare better for their chosen

path -- be it higher education, employment, or entrepreneurship. The Senior High Program is

expected to prepare students (specifically in the Academic Track) for tertiary learning as they

enter college education and improve Filipino student’s mathematical, scientific and linguistic

competence through higher quality education. With this study, the researchers aim to know the

effectiveness of the Senior High Program in fulfilling its objectives and also, the necessary

actions to be taken by the authorities to improve the current education system of the country.

Background of the Study

The Senior High School also refers to Grades 11 and 12, the added last two years of the

K-12 program implemented by DepEd. The main reason for this is our need to adapt with the

other countries and respond to globalization. Learners in the K-12 are given the chance to choose

a specialization based on aptitude, interests and school capacity. Students can choose among the

four tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; Sports; and Arts and Design. The

6
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

Academic Track includes four strands: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM); Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM); Humanities and Social Science

(HUMSS); and General Academic Strand (GAS). This program ensures that students will

graduate with the standard knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies needed for global

competition.

These additional years and pre-college learning is the most notable implementation made

by the Department of Education. The extended education given to the learners means that they

will be more ready when they enter college. The learner is also allotted with enough time to

decide on what he/she would want to happen for his/her lifetime progression. Students who were

able to articulate a good vision of their future can easily identify their goals and effectively

navigate their path into achieving them.

According to Malonda (2017), “Senior high strands under the Academic Track are still

among the most chosen track.” Most of the Filipino youth are interested in pursuing college or

higher education and going through grades 11 and 12 would be very helpful for the students.

College, which is also known as higher education, is the student’s training ground for their

chosen profession. There is a big difference between high school competence and college

readiness and so, senior high provides the transition bridge between the two. “College readiness

can be defined operationally as the level of preparation a student needs to enroll and succeed-

without remediation- in a credit-bearing general education course in a post-secondary

institution”( Conley, 2007).

Thorough preparation and practical readiness for tertiary learning which is achieved through the

Senior High Program is important for excellence and competence in college.

INPUT OUTPUT

The Input-Process-Output Model

The method of the conceptual framework that will be used in this study is “Input-Process-

Output”. The input-process-output model has historically been the dominant approach to

understanding and explaining team performance and continues to exert a strong influence on

group research today. The framework is based on classic system theory, which states that the

general structure of a system is as the important in determining how effectively it will function as

its individual components. The input is something from the external environment that is fed into

the system. In this study the input contains the school where the students are attending and the

courses that is in line with the stem strand in Negros Oriental State University. The process is the

mediating mechanism that converts inputs to outputs. It accepts the input into the system and

performs some type of operation on it which transforms it into some other state. The process that

10

will be used in gathering date is through survey questionnaire and interviewing people through

an approach with good communicating skills. In the output starts the analysis of study. It is the

result of processing the input. The output of the study will justify The Effectiveness of the Senior

High School Curriculum on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

Graduates taking on Stem- Related Courses.

A study titled “Assessment for the Preparedness of Senior High School Students Under

Academic Strands for College” the researchers of this said study are Mary Rose Bonquin, Rose

Dianne Castillo, Jaclyn De Guzman, Diane Maristella Delos Reyes, Billy De Torres, Krystel

Flores, Kashi Mae Piapil, and Lorenz Plamo. The study aims to assess the preparedness of Senior

High School students under Academic Strand for before entering Tertiary Level of Education or

College, in accordance to their family’s income, field of interest, chosen course for college and

grades or performance. The chosen respondents of this research are Senior High Sudents under

the academic strands which are students from the STEM, ABM and HUMMS strands. The study

also focuses on the role, function, benefits, advantages and impact of Senior High School under

the K-12 program. The different benefits that the students receive from Senior High School

program in aspects for College preparation are the following: The students receive global quality

of education that includes the method and approach of learning adopted from other countries can

be applied in the global work place also includes the upgraded on higher level of topics and

lessons that can enrich the knowledge of the students. The students receive on the job or actual

trainings that can help them apply what they learned. This can also enable them to develop or

improve their skills and talent that are one of the important requirements when they apply for a

job. Students receive broad and diverse subjects or programs that are extracted from college level

courses. This can provide them insights and serves as an introductory so that they will be

prepared for college. Students receive the essential tools for college preparation such as subjects,

assessments, trainings, workshops and programs. The effects of Senior High School Program to

students can either be positive or negative. But, according to the results of the research study,

almost all of the Senior High School students consider the positive effects of the program due to

its benefits, impact, roles and function that can fulfill their goals and dreams in life.

A journal titled “Perceptions of the Senior High School Students on their Employability

Skills” aimed to determine the perceptions of the Senior High Schools on their Employability

Skills and the relevance of these skills to seek decent employment and career development. The

respondents of this study consisted of Grade 12 Senior High School students of Malacampa

National High School in ABM and HUMSS strand. It can be concluded from this study that

while the ABM and HUMSS students are generally competent in the employability skills

category and place high value on these skills, the school should still provide opportunities o

enhance the students competency in numeracy for ABM students and problem solving and

communication skills for HUMSS students such as immersion, attending lectures from experts,

career orientation, visit to industries and other activities in school that will promote their

employability skills. Employability skills are essential for the students and considered significant

for career placement and educational opportunities.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The qualitative design used in this study about the Effectiveness of the Senior High

School Curriculum is the descriptive research design. It is a theory-based research design which

is created by gathering, analyzing and presenting the collected data. The researchers want to

know the views and opinions of Second year college students who are STEM graduates on how

the Curriculum helped them in surviving their first year in college.

Research Locale

The research happens in Negros Oriental State University, Dumaguete City where the

respondents are picked out.

Research Respondents

The respondents for this study are Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) second

year college students who are STEM graduates and now taking STEM-related courses. The

respondents would be 25 Engineering students and 25 Nursing students.

Research Instruments

This research study uses survey questionnaire as its instrument for data collection. These

questionnaires are handed out to the respondents along with a pen. The respondents’ answers are

the data to be used for the research.

Research Procedure

Qualitative data analysis involves the identification, examination, and interpretation of

patterns and themes in a textual data and determines how these patterns and themes help answer

the research questions at hand.

Qualitative analysis is (NSF, 1997):

• Not guided by universal rules

• Is a very fluid process that is highly dependent on the evaluator and the context of the

study

• Likely to change and adapt as the study evolves and data emerges

These are the steps that the researchers used in analyzing the data:

Step 1: Process and Record Data Immediately

After the collection of the data the answers of the respondents should be recorded in a detailed

notes

Step 2: Begin Analyzing as Data is being Collected

The moment the first pieces of data are collected it should be reviewed and processed, to look for

themes and patterns.

Step 3: Data Reduction

16
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

In a qualitative research, not all data that you gathered are relevant and meaningful, after the data

has been collected, it will need to undergo a data reduction to identify and focus on what data is

needed for your research paper

Step 4: Identifying Patterns and Themes

The data should be analyzed and grouped to form meaningful patterns and/or themes that are

observed in the answers of the respondents.

Content analysis was used by the researchers:

 Coding the data for a certain words or content

 Identifying their patterns

 Interpreting their meanings

Step 5: Data Display

After identifying themes, organize and compress the data into a display that facilitates in drawing

the conclusions.

Step 6: Conclusion drawing and verification

To draw reasonable conclusions, you will need to (Krathwohl, 1998; Miles and Huberman, 1994;

NSF, 1997):

• Step back and interpret what all of your findings mean

• Determine how your findings help answer the research question(s)

• Draw implications from your findings

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter represents an analysis and interpretation of the data in an in-depth

exploration of the research problem. The findings were based on the data gathered through the

transcript of interview from the respondents. These data were analyzed and to be presented,

discussed and interpreted to serve as the answer of the research problem.

Some respondents also said that adjusting to

college was hard because college is a lot

4. If we exclude the education/learnings The data results from the respondent shows

year of college? If yes, why do you say

19

so? If no, why?

The researchers prepared four questions to draw conclusion for this study. The first

question is on the necessity of the Senior High Curriculum. Most of the respondents reported that

it is really necessary to undergo Senior High because it is helpful for their course in college. One

respondent also reasoned that it is necessary because of strong global competition. Another

mentioned that it's necessary because it's a "growing up" stage. She said “I feel that 16-17 is still

too young because a majority is still considerably immature. Not all, but most.” Some

respondents said that the Senior High Curriculum is not necessary because it doesn’t make any

difference.

The second question tackled on the adjustments made by the respondents when they

entered college. Most of the respondents reported that adjusting to college was easy because

some topics, especially in the major subjects, were already tackled in Senior High. One

mentioned that “it's just a sort of going back to the past lessons”. Another said “the subjects that I

took in my first sem in college has been taken in the SHS already”. Some respondents also

answered that adjusting to college was hard because of the big difference between high school

and college. One respondent reported that “It was hard getting used to the ways in college”.

Another said that “It was a lot different from high school. The environment, the teaching style

and the schedule.”

The third question is if the respondents were able to develop the skills needed in college

through the senior high curriculum. All of the respondents answered that they were able to

20
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

develop the skills needed in senior high. The researchers think that this could be because the

respondents enrolled to the courses inclined with their strand in senior high.

The fourth question concerns on the survival of the respondents during their first year in

college if they exclude the learnings they attained in senior high. Most of the respondents

reported that they would have still survived college even without the learnings they attained from

senior high. One respondent answered that “Yes, I do believe that I'd still survive because of the

way I was trained in school back in my junior years. My senior years felt too laid back when

compared to when I was in junior high. I consider my shs years as buffering years and I felt

thrown out of the system when I reached college. College is like an upgraded version of my

junior years while shs felt like I was on a real vacation”. Another respondent mentioned that

“Yes, though it will take some time for me to adjust to the subjects in college”. One respondent

also made a good point and reported that “That’s the thing. Senior high doesn’t play any

essential role. Had the units required for college been less, the two years would have been worth

it.” Another respondent said that “Actually, the subjects I took up from senior high didn’t really

helped me in my chosen course since I am taking up BS Nursing, there was no medical-related

subjs in senior high”. Another also said that:

“I think I can survive the first year in college because the training that I had

undergone when I was in junior high school was already good enough. For me, senior

high school was just useless since here in college you can still encounter those things that

were discussed in senior high school. In fact, better if we will definitely exclude senior

high school because not all students who are graduates of senior high school go to work

immediately. Yes, you have gained learnings but those learnings, you can also get it here

21
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

in college and as what I have observed it was just the same. Senior high school was just a

glimpse of college life”.

Sone respondents also said that their survival during their first year I college was mostly credited

to the senior high curriculum. One respondent reasoned that “the preliminary lessons we had in

senior high really helped me in coping with the lessons in college which are very hard and would

take you a long time to understand it”. Another respondent mentioned that “senior high program

is a preparation for students entering college so I survived first year because I was fully

prepared”.

We left a blank space for additional comments from our respondents. One filled up and

said:

“I found the new curriculum quite stupid and still has holes just like the old

curriculum nothing has changed except for the addition of 2 more years in basic

education and when going to college we take up 27 units in our first semester which does

not make any sense at all which makes it nothing but an addition to costs and a waste of

time. This curriculum still needs improvement.”

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the study, and recommendation derived from the

analysis and interpretation of the data.

Summary

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Senior High School Curriculum on

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) graduates taking on their STEM-

Related courses. It was done by interviewing Second year college students who are STEM

graduates from Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) using the Synchronous Mediated

approach, taking up stem-related courses and around 30 respondents overall. Survey

questionnaires using Google forms as regards to the study were used to gather data that is needed

by the researchers. The gathered data were compiled and organized by looking for a common

theme or patterns on the response of the said respondents. The type of data analysis that was used

to analyze the data is Content Analysis. Based on the results, most of the second year college

students doesn’t find the Senior High Curriculum helpful in surviving their first year in college.

Conclusion

The following conclusions are derived from the analyzed data:

 It is really necessary to undergo senior high because it is helpful for the students. With

the senior high curriculum, students can be more competitive when it comes to global

standards. It also serves as the student’s bridge to maturity which they really need when

they go to college.

23
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

 Having gone by the senior high curriculum, students can easily adjust to their first year in

college. This is because most of the lessons have been tackled already. Students will no

longer cram to study and can understand more effectively.

 If the students are just able to choose the right track and right strand for their chosen

course in college, then SHS graduates will proceed to college equipped with the skills

they need.

 Though the necessity of the senior high program is admitted, most of the SHS graduates

say that the senior high program doesn’t play any significant role in a student’s academic

life. The units taken in senior high should be subtracted from the units students have to

take in college so that the two years in senior high will be worthy, cost-wise and time-

wise.

The researchers then conclude that the senior high program is quite effective in various

ways. One of these is its role in housing the students to mature for some time before facing a

bigger challenge in life as a college student. Another is its importance in making the college

adjustment much easier for the students. Despite its efficacy, the researchers still find some

holes in the program. The number of units students have to take in college should be lessened

if they have already taken up these units in senior high school.

Recommendations

The researchers find out that there are a lot things that needs to be improved in the study.

And these are some of those:

24
Republic of the Philippines
Dumaguete City Division
Ramon Teves Pastoral Memorial Dumaguete Science High School

 It would be better if the next researchers would conduct a comparative study about the

Effectiveness of the Senior High Curriculum. They could compare the opinions of those

student who have undergone the Senior High School Program and those who haven't

undergone the program.

 The data gathering should be conducted through an interview which is face-to-face and

one-on-one.

 The data gathering process should be conducted as early as possible. The researchers

must set a schedule for interviewing each of the respondents.
