STE 616: ADVANCED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

ASSIGNMENT NO. 1

Problem 1:
A pretensional simply supported rectangular beam has a span of 20m. It is subjected to a uniform
superimposed gravity dead-load intensity W50 and live-load intensity WL summing to 5.75 kN/m.
The initial prestress before losses is fpi = 0.70, fpu = 1,303 MPa. Compute the extreme fiber stress
at ¼ span from the left support due to:
(a) the initial full prestress and no external gravity load
(b) the final service load conditions when prestress losses have taken place

Allowable stress data as follows:

f’c = 41.4 MPa (lightweight)

fpu = 1,862 MPa (stress-relieved), specified tensile strength of tendons (ultimate)
fpy = 1,517 MPa, specified yield strength of the tendons
fpe = 1,034 MPa, effective prestress after loss
ft = 1.0√f′c = 6.40 MPa = maximum allowable tensile stress in the concrete
f’ci = 33.1 MPa = concrete compressive strength at time of initial prestress
fci = 0.68 f’ci = 19.9 MPa = maximum allowable stress in concrete at initial prestress
fs = 0.45 f’c = maximum allowable compressive stress in concrete at service

Assume that ten-½ in. diameter, seven-wire-strand (10–12.7-mm diameter strand AD = 98.71
mm2) tendons with a 108-D± strand pattern are used to prestress the beam.

ee = 0, ec = 280mm

Dimension of the beam: 405mm x 760mm

Solution:

I. By Basic Method

(a) Initial full prestress

1. Solve for the initial prestressing

Pi = Aps fpi
= (98.71 mm2 x 10 pcs)(1,303 N/mm2)
= 1,286,191.30 N
2. Solve for the moment due weight of beam

Assuming 1 meter:
Wb = mg
= (Vb x Wc)(g)
= [(0.405m x 0.76m x 1)(2,400kg/m3)][9.81 m/s2]
= 7,246.84 N/m
