VI. ADDITIONAL NOTE FOR INT’L APPLICANT

Submitting your international transcripts
When applying to a UCLA graduate program, each international applicant is
required to submit to that program official records from all academic institutions she
or he attended.
Official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution—not
photocopies—which bear the actual signature of the Registrar and the seal of the
issuing institution. If you have attended more than one institution, separate official
records should be submitted by each institution.
If your academic record cannot be replaced, obtain a properly certified copy.
Keep the original for yourself! Never send a document to UCLA that cannot be
replaced; submitted records become the property of the University, and we cannot
return them to you.
https://grad.ucla.edu/admissions/international-applicants/
Required Academic Records
Official Records
Although the application enables applicants to upload an unofficial copy of their
Additional Note
academic records, all applicants are required to submit to the major
department official records from each academic institution attended.
Official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution which
bear the actual signature of the Registrar — not a photocopy — and the seal of the
issuing institution. Do not, however, under any circumstances, send the original of an
academic record which cannot be replaced; obtain a properly certified copy instead.
Official electronic transcripts should be directed to the email address of the
major department.
If you have attended more than one institution, separate official records should
be submitted by each institution.
International Requirements
All official academic records must show the dates of enrollment; the subjects or
courses taken, together with the units of credit or time allotted to each subject and, if
rank is determined, rank in the total class or group. The records must also include a
complete description of the institution’s grading scale or other standard of evaluation.
Maximum and minimum marks and the steps between them must be indicated.
Unless academic records and diplomas are routinely issued in English by the
institution, the official records in their original language must be submitted with an
authorized, complete, and exact English translation.
Evidence of conferral of all degrees, diplomas, or professional titles must be
submitted to the major department. This evidence may be in the form of officially
certified copies of the actual diploma, or entries on official records or official
statements from granting institutions. In all cases, the statement must include the
exact, original title of the degree and the date of its formal conferral (month and year).
Certificates of completion of required courses, or of degree examinations, cannot
be accepted as evidence that the degree was granted. Degree diplomas showing month
and year of award should be issued prior to the beginning of the term applied for.
Students applying from countries where “Excellent, Very Good, Good, Pass”
marks are given on examinations must present an academic record with at least a
“Very Good” general rating.
International students who hold three-year ordinary pass degrees, or who hold
professional diplomas in accounting, business, librarianship, social work, physical
education, health education and so on, or four-year degrees, diplomas or higher
certificates from technical, vocational or postsecondary specialized schools
are not eligible for graduate admission.
Applicants holding membership in professional associations such as Institutes of
Chartered Accountants or Institutes of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators are
not qualified for graduate standing unless they also hold recognized university-level
Additional Note
degrees or titles.
Requirements by Country or Educational System
Applicants who have studied in the following countries or educational systems
should take note of the requirements listed for each country or educational system.
China
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall scholastic
achievement of 80 on a 100 point scale. Records should include the official
transcripts, university graduation certificate and the Ministry of Education degree
certificate/diploma. All records should be submitted in the original language with
official English translation.
Taiwan
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (at least four years in most fields).
Official academic records should show numerical grades. If the institution has
converted from numerical to letter grades, a conversion chart should also be
submitted.
https://grad.ucla.edu/admissions/required-academic-records/
English Requirements
If your first language is not English, you must certify proficiency in English
when you apply to UCLA. If you are admitted, you may also be required to confirm
your proficiency upon arrival.
Submit your scores from the TOEFL or the IELTS as part of your application.
Your test results can help you determine whether you are prepared to undertake
graduate study conducted in English before making extensive plans for graduate study
in the U.S.
Meeting UCLA’s English Language Requirement
Applicants who hold a bachelor’s or higher degree from a university located in
the United States or in another country in which English is both the primary spoken
language of daily life (e.g., Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New
Zealand, United Kingdom) and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at
least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempted from both
the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and the English as a Second Language Placement
Examination (ESLPE). Please be sure to include such information in your application.
Minimum IELTS & TOEFL Scores
 Your IELTS overall band score should be at least 7.0. 7.0 is the minimum
required.
 Your TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at
least 87 on the internet-based test. These scores represent
the minimum required for applicants to graduate programs at UCLA. Some
Additional Note
of our majors may require higher scores as noted in Departmental
Information.
 For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), the following are the minimum
scores for each section:
 Writing: 25
 Speaking: 24
 Reading: 21
 Listening: 17
Please note that these minimum section scores help you judge your English
language ability in different areas.
Your applications is not complete without the test scores.
TOEFL scores should be sent to your major department. Be sure to list the
TOEFL institution code for UCLA 4837.
Ask IELTS to send your scores to your major department and the Graduate
Division.
Foreign language ability can fade quickly, so please note that TOEFL and IELTS
scores are considered valid for only two years. If you took the examination multiple
times, only the most recent score is considered.

Visa Procedure
Information about obtaining I-20 or DS2019 documents will be made available
to admitted applicants by the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars.
Admitted applicants requiring a DS2019 for a J1 visa should contact the program to
which they have been admitted to submit the request.
U.S. immigration law requires that international applicants, if admitted, show
documented evidence that sufficient funds to cover all tuition, fees, transportation,
and living expenses are available for the first year of their studies at UCLA. This must
be proved before a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS2019) for a visa can be issued.
The I-20 form is issued to admitted applicants who apply, and are qualified, for
an F-1 (student) visa, after they submit a Statement of Intent to Register accepting
admission at UCLA.
The DS2019 form is issued to admitted applicants who apply, and are qualified
for, a J-1 visa, after they submit a Statement of Intent to Register accepting admission
at UCLA. J-1 (exchange visitor) status is appropriate for students whose programs of
study are substantially funded by the U.S. government, their home government, an
international or nonprofit organization, or UCLA.
Since the University cannot assume financial responsibility for its students, U.S.
government regulations require that we be satisfied that entering students have
Additional Note
sufficient funds to meet all expenses while at UCLA.
The budget for tuition, fees and living expenses for nine months beginning with
the Fall 2014 was in excess of $57,000 for a graduate academic program; the budget
for professional programs may be considerably more than that amount.
Be aware that all fees and expenses are subject to change; it is best to plan to
have additional funding well beyond the minimum.
Unless you have been officially notified in writing of an award from the
department or the Graduate Division, do not expect any financial support from
UCLA. Teaching assistantships, graduate student research appointments, fellowships
and stipends, as well as tuition fellowships, are not guaranteed for the full academic
year or for subsequent years of study, unless stated in writing.
A student on a student visa cannot accept off-campus employment at any time
during the first year in the U.S. Spouses of F-1 visa holders (F-2) are not allowed to
work under any circumstances.
Students transferring from another U.S. college or university must request a
transfer to UCLA from their current school, and must also complete Immigration and
Naturalization Service requirements before the end of the second week of their first
term at UCLA. To comply, students must report to the Dashew Center for
International Students and Scholars and bring a letter from the former school
indicating that the student maintained visa status and is eligible to transfer to UCLA.

VII. OTHER
Will the degree or the transcripts from the online program state “Masters Online”?
Additional Note
Each student’s transcript will list courses by department name and course
number, in the same manner as they are for the on-campus programs. The transcript’s
degree designation will read “Master of Science in Engineering” and, because of
equivalency, there will be no mention of “online.”
http://www.msol.ucla.edu/faq/
Review and Notification
Submitted application materials are reviewed by faculty admissions committees
in each major program who select the best qualified applicants. These admissions
committees base recommendations for admission upon a careful comparison of
applications, and this may take considerable time. Diversity, Inclusion and
Admissions, therefore, cannot guarantee that the applicant will receive a response,
favorable or unfavorable, on or before any specific date. The applicant, moreover,
should not construe a lack of response as an intention to act favorably on the
application.
Shortly after receiving your application, Diversity, Inclusion and Admissions
sends an acknowledgment via email. Applicants should expect to receive an email
acknowledgment within 72 hours of submitting the online application.
If you do not receive an email acknowledgment within a reasonable amount of
time (five to seven days), please review your online application to be sure the
submission process was completed. Please also be sure to check your “junk” email
box, in case UCLA’s email was diverted there by your spam filter. If you still have not
received the acknowledgment email, please contact onlineapphelp@grad.ucla.edu in
case there is a minor problem with your application data.
When a decision is made, applicants receive an email, directing them to the
Graduate Division’s application site and the option Decision Status. Applicants sign in
using the email address used to create their application account (not the User Name)
and their application password to read the official decision letter.
If admitted, the conditions of admission and information and instructions
concerning registration (via a link to the Statement of Intent to Register and a
Statement of Legal Residence) will be included as part of the offer of admission letter,
which can be printed out from the Graduate Division site. (International applicants:
please read Visa Procedures/Financial Verification.)
Only official notification from the dean of the Graduate Division constitutes
approval of admission.
