Bonhoeffer
On Tuesday November 17
the World War 2 Book Club
heard a lecture from Eric
Metaxas on his award winning
Book. Bonhoeffer, Pastor,
Martyr, Prophet, Spy. We had
attendance in excess of 80 and
this was easily one of the most
popular events in the short
history of our organization.
Metaxas is a gifted orator and
with humor, passion, and
enthusiasm, related the tragic
but uplifting story of this
courageous Lutheran pastor
who defied the Nazis, assisted
in the highly dangerous mission
of protecting and helping Jews
to escape from Germany.
Bonhoeffer refused to bend his
pastoral sermons to fit the Nazi
propaganda despite threats of
imprisonment. Bonhoeffer, in the
last days of the Nazi reign was
arrested for complicity in plots to
eliminate Hitler and was
executed.
Pat McGinley was so
impressed with Metaxas that
she sent me a card which said

lives". I think that sentiment
about sums up the general
reaction of our members to the
program!
Metaxas is the founder and
host of the hugely popular
lecture series Socrates in the
City [SITC] which just completed
it's tenth year.
Future Programs
There will be no formal
program in December. The
schedule for January through
May 2011 is set.
January 18, we will host
Terry Golway who has written
Together We Cannot Fail, a
collection of the most famous
"Fireside Chats" of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt. Terry is a
professor of History at Kean
University.
February 15 we will hear
from a local author who just
published his successful book
Axis Sally-The American Voice
of Nazi Germany. Several of our
members who served in Europe

during World War 2 remarked
that they remember some of the
broadcasts.
March 15 we will hear from
Jan Herman. Jan is Chief
Historian of the Navy Medical
Department and Special
Assistant to the Surgeon
General. Jan will show a short
film on the latest medical
techniques designed to treat
wounded soldiers and also
discuss all the modern
innovations designed to assist
our fighting men and women.
May 17 we will hear from
another local author Ursula
Pawel who has written a
fascinating story of her survival
from imprisonment in a Nazi
Concentration Camp which
claimed the lives of her Father
and brother, and how
miraculously she met her
mother at the end of the war.
Her book is My Child is Back.
