Tutorial 3 – Kinematics of Particles (Projectile, tangential/normal &

transverse/radial components)

1. A tennis player serves the ball at a height h = 2.5 m with an initial velocity of
vo at an angle of 5° with the horizontal. Determine the range for which of vo
for which the ball will land in the service area which extends to 6.4 m beyond
the net..
[Ans: 37.7 m/s < v0 < 44.3 m/s]

2. Figure below shows a catapult is placed on the horizontal platform. The

catapult is used to launch a ball at velocity vo = 5 m/s at the angle of  = 50o. a)
Determine the range of height h so that the ball enters the opening AB. B)
Evaluate the effect of angle  on the time required for the ball to reach point A
with the same initial velocity.
[Ans: 20.8 m < h < 35.6 m, b) t = (1/6) cos ]
3. In a mechanized production process of ball bearings, the bearings move on the
horizontal track with the acceleration given by a = kx m/s2 where x is in m.
The ball bearings would then reach end B and fall through the 100mm
diameter hole as shown figure below. Knowing that a = 1 m/s2 when x = 0.25
m, determine, a) the range value of u if the ball bearings were to enter the
hole CD, b) the corresponding time of flight from B to the hole CD, c) the
corresponding range of distance d required.
[Ans: a) 37.7 m/s < v0 < 44.3 m/s, b) t = 0.2s, c) 0.8 m < d < 1.1 m]

4. To test its performance, an automobile is driven around a circular test track of

diameter d. Determine (a) the value of d if when the speed of the automobile is
72 km / h, the normal component of the acceleration is 3.2 m/s2 , (b) the speed
of the automobile if d = 180m and the normal component of the acceleration is
measured to be 0.6 g..
[Ans: a) d = 250 m , b) v = 82 9 . km/h]

5. At a given instant in an airplane race, airplane A is flying horizontally in a

straight line, and its speed is being increased at the rate of 8 m/s2 Airplane B
is flying at the same altitude as airplane A and, as it rounds a pylon, is
following a circular path of 300-m radius. Knowing that at the given instant
the speed of B is being decreased at the rate of 3 m/s2 determine, for the
positions shown, (a) the velocity of B relative to A, (b) the acceleration of B
relative to A.
[Ans: a) vB/A = 501 km/h  = 68.9°, b) aB/A = 82.2 m/s  = 25.1°]
6. The oscillation of rod OA about O is defined by the
relation q = (2 /) (sin t), where q and t are expressed in
radians and seconds, respectively. Collar B slides along
the rod so that its distance from O is r = 625/(t + 4) where
r and t are expressed in mm and seconds, respectively.
When t = 1 s, determine (a) the velocity of the collar, (b)
the total acceleration of the collar, (c) the acceleration of
the collar relative to the rod..
[Ans: a) vA = -(25 mm/s)er - (250 mm/s) e b) aA = -(490
mm/s2)er + (100 mm/s2) e , c) aB/OA = (10mm/s2 )er ]

7. The pin at B is free to slide along the circular

slot DE and along the rotating rod OC. Assuming
that the rod OC rotates at a constant rate θ,(a)
show that the acceleration of pin B is of constant
magnitude, (b) determine the direction of the
acceleration of pin B.
[Ans: a) vA = -(25 mm/s)er - (250 mm/s) e b) aA
= -(490 mm/s2)er + (100 mm/s2) e , c) aB/OA =
(10mm/s2 )er ]

6. Slider S can freelyslide along curves shaft OB,

𝑥2
described by equation 𝑦 = 4 . At the instant
shown, slotted link OA is rotating at a constant
angular velocity of ω = 2 rad/s in anticlockwise
direction. a) Determine the velocity of the slider.
b) How to increase the velocity of slider S
without changing the angular velocity of the
slotted link OA?
[Ans: a) v = 16.1i + 32.2j m/s b) v = 48.2i + 64.3j
m/s ]
