Discussion Questions:
Question 1. What are the benefits for Event Organizers to make their event more
sustainable?
Answer: I believe that there are three major benefits that the Event Organizers or
Event Management Companies gain by carrying out sustainable Events;
Brand Reputation
It Improves the brand reputation and makes a statement that the organizers are
sustainable and considerate when it comes to climate change. Building out an
events’ social responsibility is beneficial in so many ways from generating new
customers who are environmentally conscious to building on the financial value of
the event that might open up new opportunities in terms of sponsorship and
funding.
2. Cost savings
Implementing environmentally friendly changes for the event can save business
money. Instead of spending lots of money on importing food, for example, source
local food and reduce the cost of catering at the same time as reducing the carbon
footprint.
It will also improve the sustainability of the business in the long-term. If the event
is less dependent on natural resources then the event will not have to deal with the
rising prices of resources.
3. Increase Investment Opportunity
Going green can open up new revenue opportunities in terms of sponsorship and
investment for the event. Increasingly if the organizers are seen as a socially
conscious company then the event and the organizers are more attractive when it
comes to sponsors, funding and business deals. Organizing sustainable events
opens doors for a different range of and more sponsors.
Question 2. Look at the website for Rocksilde Festival, a huge annual green
Festival in Denmark. How sustainable is the event already? Can it be made more
sustainable?
Answer: Sustainability at Roskilde Festival is balancing environmental, social and
economic aspects of sustainability.
The environmental aspects include the consumption of resources and emissions,
for example what we purchase, water and electricity.
The social aspects include ethical, social and interpersonal relationships, for
example ensuring safety and equality for people involved in activities at Roskilde
Festival and in the world.
The economic aspects include investments, stability and balance, eg. long term
investments in sustainable development projects and creating a yearly profit that is
donated to charity.
1. Fossil-free energy supply
All of the energy spent on Roskilde Festival activities, both from the electricity
grid and fossil fuels, comes directly from sustainable energy sources. It may be
produced locally or centrally, and it may come from wind, sun, water or a
completely different kind of technology. But the energy comes from energy
sources without environmentally negative consequences.
2. All waste is resources
The festivalgoers, ourselves and the events’ partners take most of it with them
home. What is left behind is viewed upon as resources. Therefore, the festivalgoers
and partners sort at the source, and they have a number of partners that reuse the
resources in their existing form or recycle them for new products.
3. Input without negative environmental impact
The building materials used, the equipment rented, the food and beverages
purchased, the non-food that is sold and the operating equipment used are all
produced in the same way that the festival is run; Without negative environmental
impact.
Apart from this, the event can also focus on serving food that is a more sustainable
option in terms of being cooked. Apart from that, the festival must also try to
implement the practice of Silent Discos to reduce sound pollution around the area.
Question 3. How can a music Festival be used to promote a more sustainable
lifestyle every day?
Answer: When Festivals take the first step to create an environment that is
sustainable and eco-friendly, the visitors to these festivals gain a lot of insight into
the issues regarding global warming. They engage in activities that are eco-friendly
themselves after the festival ends due to the impact that was created on their
minds;
 Encourage attendees to carry a reusable water bottle and refill it
throughout the day. This will eliminate the need to purchase bottled water
and reduce the amount of waste created from your event goers I everyday
life
 Reuse whatever materials possible. Badge holders, lanyards, and ribbons
are all items that can be collected and reused at your next events. The same
principle can be used by event goers for other things they use every day.
 Try going “zero waste”. Cutting down on the amount of waste created by
the event and its attendees. The main way to create a “zero waste” event is to
offer composting for uneaten food. This can be followed by event goers in
normal life too
 Buy local materials, food, and beverages. Usage of local vendors and
business owners from the community to provide items for the event
whenever possible. This encourages the event goers to do the same outside
the event as well
 Work with local charities for left-over or reusable items. Organize
donations of left-over food with a local food bank or shelter and speak to
other local charities about donating reusable items. This would encourage
the event goers to carry out similar activities in their locality.
