Preface

i
This instruction manual contains a description of the operations to be performed
in order to use the Marposs E9 gauge.
The system is described in its maximum configuration and in its possible variants,
so only the sections of the book that refer to the specific application must be
consulted.
It is advisable to follow the operating procedures indicated in this book, in order to
avoid damaging the gauging system.

The information contained in this manual are aimed to the following type of operator:
Machine operator, whose task is to check the correct operation of the system by
means of signaling toward the machine logic. If necessary, he can also make
interventions on the system is order to adapt it to the programming and to optimize
the times of interventions on the system and therefore its production.

1. Use of amplifier

1. Use of amplifier
1.1 General description
The application of the MARPOSS E9 gauging system on grinders offers a highly
reliable solution to the problem of improving the performance of this type of machine
tool.
This chapter contains a general description of the basic parts that form a gauge for
grinders:
• Measuring head.
During the grinding cycle the contacts of the measuring head touch the workpiece.
The mechanical movements of the workpiece that is being ground, transmitted by the
fingers, are converted into electric signals by the transducers and sent to the
electronic amplifier.
• Electronic amplifier.
The electronic amplifier processes the information it receives from the measuring
head, and displays, on the meter fitted on its front panel, the difference between the
actual measurement value and the final value that must be obtained.

The electronic amplifier can have several configurations, depending on the individual
applications. For instance:
• With controls, for automatic cycles;
• Without controls, for read-only cycles;
• With analog output;
• Etc.

normal operation the selector switch must be in this position.

Note
Put the selector switch 6 in its position before performing any operation
on the unit and/or machine tool.

7 Cycle-start LED
8 Potentiometer for adjusting the delay time.
It adjusts the duration of the delay between the beginning of the grinding
cycle and the enabling of the gauging system (controls).
2 Power-on LED.
In applications with memory (oscillating head or workpieces with interrupted
surfaces), the underlighting of this LED indicates that the measurement is
stored during the moments in which the contact does not touch the surface
that is being ground.

2.2.1 Adjustment of Delay Time

The adjustment of the delay time, which is performed by acting on potentiometer 8
visible in Figure 1 on page 8, must be done in order to ensure that the gauging
system is enabled only when the measuring head is over the workpiece.
To facilitate the upward movement of the contacts, the measuring head can be
supplied with an electric retraction that is enabled during the delay.

2.3 Controls
References in Figure 1 on page 8.
The controls are signals that are fed to the machine tool during the grinding cycle in
order to change the speed of stock removal in relation to the dimension of the
workpiece.

9 LEDs for controls.

They light up to indicate that the relevant control has been activated.
10 Potentiometers for adjusting firing points of controls.
They determine the firing points of the respective controls.
11 Pushbuttons for displaying firing points of controls.
When one of these pushbuttons is pressed, the meter indicates the firing
point of the control.
NOTE The following number of controls can be present on the panel:
None
1 + zero control (sparkout, end of cycle)
2 + zero control (finish-grinding, sparkout, end of cycle)
3 + zero control (rough-grinding, finish-grinding, sparkout, end of cycle)

2.3.1 Adjustment of Firing Points of Controls

• Put the unit in the manual mode (switch 6 in position )
• Set the controls, starting from the third one and ending with the first one (from left
to right). The final dimension control (0 È) is preset to be activated at zero.
• Press the relevant pushbutton 11, and at the same time act on the potentiometer
10 so as to cause the meter 3 to indicate the desired firing point.

13 Zero-setting potentiometer
Three types of zero-setting potentiometers can be supplied:
• 1 turn
• 10 turns with window
• 10 turns with dial
The potentiometer is used for the electric zero-setting of the gauging
system on a master workpiece. Its position must not be changed during the
grinding cycle.
14 Plate for indication of range of potentiometer 13.
O For applications with type “a” potentiometer.
Range:
− 100 microns (0,04”)
− 1000 microns (0,4”)
4l l3 µm For applications with type “b” or “c” potentiometer. The
plate indicates the amount of the displacement for each
4l l3 “
division of the potentiometer. For instance:

4l l3 0,2 µm range 100 microns.

c) Check the zero-setting of the measuring system. Any slight corrections that
might be needed can be performed by acting on the zero-setting
potentiometer 13. Should this not be possible, carry out a complete zero-
setting on the gauging system (see chapter 3 -“Zero-setting of measuring
head” on page 18).
d) Make sure that the controls have been set correctly by means of buttons 11.
e) Bring the measuring head back to its home position and put the unit in the

Warning
During the automatic function, should the amplifier not give out the correct
indications on the measurement, consult the Installation Manual in paragraph "1.4
Internal Programming and adjusting operations”.

3. Zero-setting of measuring head
This chapter contains a description of the operations that must be performed on the
electronic amplifier and on the measuring head, in order to zero-set the gauging
system.
The procedure consists of two stages:
1. The machine tool and electronic amplifier are prepared for the zero-setting.
• Put the selector switch 6 in position (Manual mode)
• Put the zero-setting potentiometer 13 at the center of its range.
• Load the master workpiece in the machine.
2. The gauging system is zero-set by acting on the measuring head and on the
electronic amplifier (see paragraph 3.1, “Mechanical zero-setting of measuring
head” on page 19).
It is advisable to carry out these operations with the utmost care, in order to obtain
the accuracy and repeatability that the gauging system can ensure.

3. Zero-setting of measuring head

3.1 Mechanical zero-setting of measuring head

The zero-setting of the measuring heads can be performed with several mechanical
methods, which will be examined individually in the subsequent paragraphs. Only the
description that refers to the specific application that is being used must be read.
3.1.1 Zero-setting with micrometric screw
a) Loosen screw 1 and move contact 2 as far back as it will go.

potentiometer 13 (Figure 1).
j) Put the machine in working conditions (workpiece and wheel revolving, coolant
