2 a) A countercurrent stripper is used for regeneration wash oil (molecular wt=260) which is used
as a solvent for absorbing benzene from coal gas. The wash oil benzene solution containing
10.0mol% benzene is admitted into a stripper at a rate of 1800 kg/h. Superheated steam at
400K and 100.0kPa is the stripping agent. The steam is supplied at a rate of 45kg/h. The
regenerated solvent should contain not more than 0.5mol% benzene. The oil-benzene solution
may be assumed to behave as an ideal solution. The vapour pressure of benzene at 400K is
350kPa.
i. Calculate the concentration of benzene in the exit gas stream expressed as mole %
ii. Plot the equilibrium curve and operating line on mole fraction coordinates and mole
ratio coordinates. 16
b) Write a note on multi component absorption. 4

3 a) A mixture containing 60mol% A and rest B is flash vaporized at 101.3kPa until 40% of the
original mixture is vaporized. If the relative volatility of the mixture is 2.5 and is expected to
remain constant. Determine the composition of the products. 8
b) Explain in brief about azeotropic and extractive distillation. 12
-1- Please Turn Over
-2- 5CH02
4 a) Explain the method of obtaining number of stages from McCabe Thiele method. 10
b) An enriching column is fed with a feed consisting of 40mol% benzene and 60mol% toluene at
101.3kPa. The feed enters at a rate of 100kmol/h as a saturated vapor and it is desired to
produce a distillate containing 90mol% benzene and the bottom product contains 10mol%
benzene. Assume that a total condenser is used and the reflux ratio is 4.0mol per mol of
distillate. Detemine
i. Molar rate of production of distillate and residue.
ii. Composition of residue.
iii. Number of theoretical plates.

b) Black ash containing 45 weight % Na2CO3 and the rest water – insolubles is extracted with
water such 96% of soda ash in it is recovered. The underflow carries with it 15kg water with
every 100kg insolubles. Determine the total quantity of water used and the concentration of
the combined extract if the leaching has been carried out for a feed rate of 1000kg/h of black
ash in a two-stage cross-flow cascade system where equal amounts of water are added in both
the stages. 15
