-A conclusion is a judgment or opinion formed after a careful consideration of presented
information.

Drawing Conclusions
Drawing a conclusion is an important skill in reading. It involves
analysis and requires you to anticipate events and predict
outcomes from what you read in the text. When we read a Gotta
passage or text, we use our inferencing skills to make conclusions learn
from the given context. Context clues or hints from the passage them
help us create logical conclusions. all!

Strategies for Drawing Conclusions

1. Consider the genre of the text.

Information is conveyed differently in different types of texts. If you are going to read a poem,
look for implied information in detailed descriptions and metaphors. If you are going to read a
scientific text, look for implied information in graphs and tables. In a historical text, consider
dates and contextual evidence.

2. Read the title and consider the topic of the work.

Based on the title, take a guess as to what the text is about. Consider the knowledge you have
about this topic. By considering the topic before you start reading the text, you can mentally
prepare for words and ideas that you will encounter.

3. Refer to your knowledge.

Your prior knowledge can help you in making conclusions, particularly if what is in the text is
something that you have experienced before or watched someone else experience.

4. Consider the work as a whole.

Do not feel pressure to clearly understand every word (although that is certainly a goal you can
achieve with practice); if you are having difficulty, just continue to read the entire passage.
After reading the entire text, you may gain a different perspective.
Example:

You are asked to read a journal article entitled A Correlation

of the Photosynthetic Activity of Green and Red Algae. You

do not know what it is about, but it is possible to make a

conclusion from just the title.

Explanation:

From the title, you may conclude that the article in scientific and you can use
it if you are conducting a research on the different kinds of algae.
