1.

Draw a
lateral view of
a shrimp
showing the
body regions
and the
variety of
appendages.

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Anthropoda Subphylum: Crustacea

Class: Malacostraca Order: Decapoda Family: Penacidae

Genus: Penaeus Species Common name: Shrimp

Cephalothorax: This is a combination of the head and thorax which is covered with a large dorsal shield
called the carapace

Abdomen- Segmented body part which contains organs

Rostrum- rigid forward extension of the carapace which can b used for attack or defence

Eye- compound eye

Antennule- organ of balance, touch and taste

Antenna- appendage used for sensing

Third Maxilliped- used for feeding, grooming and possible pheromone reception

Pereopods- used for walking

Petasma- copulatory appendage

Pleopods- adapted for swimming and carrying eggs in females

Telson- posterior-most division which is part of the spayed tail fain

Uropod- posterior appendage which functions in locomotion. It is part of the tail fan

Notes

The cephalothorax of the shimp is divided into the head and the thorax which makes up the bigger
region
2. Draw an acorn barnacle noting the calcified plates protecting the body.

Kingom: Animalia Phylum: Anthropoda Class: Maxillipoda

Subclass: Cirripedia Order: Thoracica Family: Chthamaidae

Genus: Chthamalus Species: antennatus Common name: Acorn Barnacle

Cirri- reaches out into the water to grab food

Carina- plate located at the posterior end

Tergum- triangular opercular plate

Scutum- Triangular opercular pate

Rostrum- plate located at the anterior end

Laterals- Plates found between the carino-laterals and the rostum

Carinolateral- Narrow compartment next to the carina

Notes

The barnacles enclosed in calcareous plates which are secreted by the carapace which surrounds the
body. The legs are long, many-jointed cirri with hairlike setae which extended through an opening
between the calcareous plates known as tergum and scutum to filter from water small particles on
which the animal feeds. The barnacle observed is directly attached to its substrate. Barnacles were most
likely considered to be molluscs since a calcareous plate encloses their body.
3. Draw a preserved myriapod, either a centipede or a millipede

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Anthropoda Subphylum: Myriapod

Class: Diplopoda Order: Family:

Genus: Species Common name: Millipede

Calcified head- rounded structure used to sense the environment

Body Segment- contains two pairs of jointed legs

Legs- used for locomotion

Antenna- appendage used for sensing

Eye- consists of several simple flat-lensed oceli arranged in a group.

Anal segment- contains the anus

Notes

Millipedes have a rounded body and hard chitinous exoskeleton which heps to prtotect them. They feed
on decayed plant and animal matter and sometimes living plants. They prefer dark moist places under
stones and logs. Millipedes secrete a hydrogen cyanide fluid that causes them to have a foul odour. This
is a defence mechanism used by the millipede to repel enemies when they feel threatened
4. Draw a preserved arachnid, either a spider or a scorpion

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Anthropoda Class: Arachnida

Order: Araneomorphae Family: Genus: Zosis

Species: geniculatus Common name: House Spider

Notes

Legs

Eyes

Pedipalp

Chelicerae and fangs

Spinnerets
5. Draw a preserved insect; either a beetle, bug, wasp or bee

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Anthropoda Class: Insecta

Order: Hymenoptera Family: Apidae Genus: Apis Linnaeus

Species: Apis mellifera Common name: Honey bee

Compound eye- visual receptor

Antenna- sensory appendage

Mandible- mouth part used for biting, cutting and holding food

Forewing- used for flight and ventilating the hive

Hindwing- used for flight and ventilating the hive

Hind legs- Assists in locomotion. Contains pollen comes which allows for the transport of pollen

Middle legs- assist in locomotion and helps clean the thorax

Fore legs- Assists in locomotion and sweeps the pollen and other particles from the head, mouth part
and eyes

Hairy thorax- supports two pairs of wings and three legs

Abdomen- contains vital organs

Proboscis- produces a tube for drawing up liquids

Notes
Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class:

Order: Family: Genus:

Species: Astyanax bimaculatus Common Name: Sardine
