Propagation of the orchidaeceae family of plants

growing orchids from keiki

Orchids can be propagated vegetatively and from seed . Growing from seed is
technologically demanding as the seeds must germinate under laboratory conditions into
sterile glass containers on agar agar medium. It is a demanding job that requires knowledge
of sterilization and assembly of nutrient media . The whole process, until the plants grow to a
height of 1 cm, takes about a year and after that it takes another 3 to 8 years for the plants to
become ready for flowering . Furthermore, propagation from the meristem is also practiced
where small pieces of plant tissue are grown under laboratory conditions for the mass
production of identical clones of the mother plant. By vegetative propagation we mean
propagation:shoots , cuttings and dividing .

The offspring (Keiki) or in Hawaiian small child

propagation by shoots

"the simplest way to reproduce is to

sprout ..." The vegetative shoots that some orchid genera produce (Dendrobium,
Phalaenopsis) are also called keiki, which in Hawaiian means a small child. At the moment
when they produce several root shoots longer than 2.5 cm, they can be removed from the
parent plant. The simplest way of reproduction is to propagate by shoots or small shoots that
grow on the stems. If you coat your Phalaenopsis staples with growth hormones (herbal
pharmacies), a new plant may develop instead of a flower stalk. Once these plants have
developed, separate them from the mother plant and plant in compostfor orchids. Make sure
the flower pot in which you plant the orchids has a high permeability to allow the water to
drain as best as possible. At first, rarely water a young plant, but often moisten its leaves
until the roots get used to the new environment.

Orchid cuttings as a method of propagation

propagation by orchid shoots

"many species of the genus Dendrobium can be propagated by stem cuttings ..."

Many species of the genus Dendrobium can be propagated by stem cuttings. Cuttings
should be 30 cm long and have at least one sleeping pup. Lay them on a damp moss or
similar nutrient medium and leave in a shady place. Provide high humidity in the area. When
buds sprout from the buds, plant them.

Orchid sharing as a way of propagation

orchid propagation by division
"... plant each part separately, making sure that the oldest bulb is at the edge of the flower
pot ...."

When the orchid outgrows the cultivated pot and several leafless bulbs appear, it is time for
propagation by division. Remove the orchid from the flower pot and try to separate it with
your hands (if it doesn't go cut the plant but be careful not to damage the healthy bulbs).
Discard rotting bulbs, old compost and dead roots and plant each section separately, making
sure that the oldest bulb is at the edge of the flower pot. This allows new bulbs to grow
freely.
