SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
2016/2017 SECOND SEMESTER EXAMINATION.
COURSE CODE: MTH 421 COURSE TITLE: STATISTICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING
PROGRAMME: HND II
EXAMINER: ENGR. (MRS) G.I.F DAN-ORAWARI
ANWER FIVE QUESTIONS TIME ALLOWED: 3 HOURS
1. (I) State three properties of a Poisson distribution.
(II) Nelson discusses a process that historically has 1.6 flaws per 1000-m length of wire.
(a) Find the probability that a 1000-m length of wire has (i) one or fewer flaws (ii) more than two flaws.
(iii) Find the mean number of flaws per 1000-m length of wire, the variance and the standard deviation.

(b) Consider a 500-m length of wire. (i) Find the probability that it has no flaws. (ii) Find the expected
number of flaws, the variance and the standard deviation.

2. (I) Give three properties of a normal distribution.

(II) An automobile manufacturer gives a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty on its drive train. Historically, 7%
of this manufacturer’s automobiles have required service under warranty. Consider a random sample
of 15 cars.

Find the probability that: (i) exactly one car requires service under the warranty. (ii) more than one car
requires service under the warranty. (iii) Find the expected number of cars that requires service under the
warranty, the variance and standard deviation.

3. (a) The life span of a battery is normally distributed, with a mean of 2000 hours and a standard
deviation of 30 hours. What percent of batteries have a life span that is more than 2065 hours? Would
it be unusual for a battery to have a life span that is more than 2065 hours? Explain your reasoning.
(b) Stat0e five characteristics of a binomial distribution.
4. (I) Find and indicate the area under the standard normal curve
(a) (i)To the right of z= 1.645 (ii) To the left of z = -3.08
(b) (i) Between z = -2.33 and z=2.33 (ii) Between -1.53 and z = 0
(II) Assuming the random variable y is normally distributed with mean 𝜇=86 and standard deviation 𝜎=5.
Find the indicated probability of:

(i) 𝑃(𝑦 < 100) (ii) 𝑃(𝑦 > 92) (𝑖𝑖𝑖) 𝑃(70 < 𝑦 < 80)
5. Historically, the chemical reactor for a polyester polymer has averaged 65% with a standard deviation
of 1.5%. Consider a random sample of ten batches.

Find the probability that the sample mean is: (i) Between 62% and 66%. (ii) Less than 64%. (iii) Greater
than 67%. What did you assume in order to do this analysis?

6. (a) The nominal power produced by a student-designed internal combustion engine is 100 hp. The
student team that designed this engine conducted ten tests to determine the actual power. The data
follows:
98 101 102 102 101
98 100 100 92 100

Assume that the nominal average is true and the sample variance is approximately 8.23. Calculate the
observed value for the t-statistic. (b) Differentiate between discrete and continuous random variables

7. (a) What is an experimental design? Give two advantages of the following (i) Complete Randomized
Design (CRD) (ii) Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD).
(b) Differentiate between Latin square design and Graeco Latin square design.

8. (a) A process is currently operating in-control. The control limits for the X bar and R charts are:

The sample size is five. What would the appropriate parameters of the S chart be?
(b) What does the R chart measure? Why is this important? (c) What is attribute data?
