MICLA, DIETHER U.

PORTFOLIO

Welcome to my e-Portfolio

Good Day! I am Diether Micla and I would like you to present my ePortfolio. I am a
hard-working fifth year student of University of Baguio in School of Engineering and
Architecture; I’m currently enrolled in Theory of Structures and this ePortfolio is being
created as one of the Midterm Requirements.

In addition to this subject, My Goal is to learn more and expand my knowledge in the
said subject I am taking. Second, is to develop my skills in solving problems especially
to the ones I am having a hard time to understand that I can surely use this in the near
future.

To add more, to this Welcome page, my ePortfolio includes a Resume Page and a Work
Page. On my Resume page you will find attached a copy of my current resume

My Contact Me page holds information about how you can contact me for
more questions and clarifications.

I hope you enjoy reading over the information in my ePortfolio as much as I

enjoyed creating it for you!
My Work Page
(Quizes, Seatworks, Assignments and Exam)

I have completed all the said activities, and accomplished my goals for
this semester.

So here are the topics for Midterms:

 Bolt connection
  Compression members
 Column capacities
  Laterally supported and unsupported beam 
  Flexural Buckling

First of all, I would love to extend my apology to you maam for being not able
to present our report on time, due to that not all of my groupmates are not so
committed and they are not participating when we are on meetings.

However, on the first day of midterms we tackled about the bolt connection
which is the continuation of the last topic for the prelims. It was discussed the
different types of connections, shear strength, bearing strength, tensile strength and
the allowable load. I find this a bit easier before the difficult topic to come

Additionally, the next topic was about compression members, there, the first
reporter discussed about how the Euler’s column buckling theory works. They
discussed the formulas and how it can be solved. It was also discussed there the
effective length factor, radius of gyration and the laterally unbraced length of
member. At first I got really confused in understanding the discussion being
conducted by my classmate, but after a lot of trials and errors and with the help of
our instructor, after she re-discussed it got a bit clearer to me. This kind of activity
helps us the students to get a collaborative studies and with the successful
corroboration.

Next topic was the column capacities, to be honest this topic is kind of my
favorite and I learned this a bit fast. With the right understanding with the formula, I
got it easily to understand. Besides, I keep on solving problems with my free time,
for me to get familiar with the topic and for me not to get lost when quizzes,
seatwork and exams arrived. It was discussed there the slender ratio, critical
slender ratio, how to determine the column (if it is intermediate, short or long
column). Also, our professor helped us on how to use the alignment chart.

Fourthly, the Laterally supported and unsupported beam. Honestly, I can’t

remember if this was a report by my classmates. Anyways, A laterally supported
beam is one where the compression flange is supported and prevented from
buckling in the horizontal plane due to the compressive forces in the top flange. If it
is subjected to both bending as well as twisting moment or simply rotational force it
is called as laterally unsupported beam. Which will cause more failure is only
laterally unsupported beam since it is subjected to bending and twisting there won’t
be lateral support on the beam to resist failure instead it fails. This topic is one of the
most challenging and it needed me a time to understand it, I even got many
breakdowns because of frustration in solving these. I almost lost hope. But of
course, this will not help me to make it to the end, I need to pass this subject due to
that Im currently taking my Thesis 1 and if failed this subject I will not make it to take
the Thesis 2. So I pushed myself and give my very best to understand everything I
must learned of.

To summarize my academic experience on Steel and timber design, I understood

the principles of this course and the topics that I might use them in the future, perhaps
in the real world outside college life. I will surely apply all the knowledge I gained to this
subject to solve technical problems for the preparation of the the subject that is
prerequisite to this subject. I have gained the ability to use the techniques, skills, and
modern tools necessary for the practice after college. I hope that I can push through
and to catch up with my grade as I am doing my very best to excel in this subject.
Overall experience, I am having a hard time with numbers but I am also having fun
solving them with the right Instructor and with a fun classmate to be with. And lastly, I
hope we all get through this subject and make it till finals, I hope we al get pass this
subject especially me that I need this for me to take to the next level, to be specific to
take my Thesis 2 next sem. That’s all and I thank youuuuu! “God gives mercy to those
who help themselves.”
