Session objectives

• The session will cover a number of important considerations when

implementing IBM i in a virtual environment, either with IBM i host or
VIOS host, running on internal SAS disk drives.
• With Power8 scale-out systems and their capability to have many
internal disk drives in the CEC and EXP24 expansions, we have seen
increasing number of badly configured systems with VIOS in the
field.

Multiple Ways to Host Partitions
IBM i:
• Same skill sets you already have and are familiar with
• Can share CEC DVD “virtually” with IBM i 6.1 (and later)
• Can also share CEC Tape with IBM i 7.1 TR2 (and later)
• No Reload Required

VIOS (Virtual I/O Server):

• Requires some knowledge of AIX
• Used to have more flexible Internal DVD and Tape Sharing
• Save and Restore of existing partition required!
• Access to external disk through FC NPIV
• Live Partition Mobility and other advanced virtualization technology

512/528 (5xx) byte sectors vs 4k byte sectors

• Same performance based on early results and predictions

• Same price as equivalent GB and rpm (Used to be… 4k getting
cheaper)
• 4k is something the industry is adopting. It allows for bigger capacity
disk drives.
• Can mix 4K and 5xx byte sector drives on the same SAS
controller/adapter, but can NOT mix in the same array.

• Suggestion from a pessimist ….

• Don’t mix xxx GB 4k and 5xx block on the same LPAR.
Risk of confusion in the future.

Configuring Raid for Performance with 5XX sector Drives

• All PCIe2/PCIe3 SAS adapters (e.g.

FC 5913, ESA3, and EJ0L), have been
PDISKS enhanced with hardware acceleration
that is optimized on 8 sector I/O
5XX boundaries.
RAID X (0,1,5,6,10)
• When IBM i attaches a 512 byte sector
device, its I/O is on 9 sector boundaries.

5XX HDISK • Using one of these newer adapters with

IBM i using 512 byte sector storage will
LV or File Backed Virtual Disks cause significant write performance
degradation verses what the adapter is
allow520blocks=True
capable of doing.
vhost vhost
• In order to use these adapters in a
VIOS environment, you must
virtualize the entire hdisk to the IBM i
lpar.

Dual VIOS, Raid 0 Configuration

 Due to performance
optimizations in the OS and VIOS1 VIOS2
DB2, IBM i still prefers 5XX PDISK 5XX PDISK
seeing multiple LUNs. RAID 0 RAID 0

 In order to maximize the 5XX HDISK 5XX HDISK

number of LUNs seen by

IBM i and still have access
to 520 byte sectors RAID 0 allow520blocks=True allow520blocks=True
vhost vhost
is the best solution.
 VIOS rootvg could be
installed on a RAID10 array
or use mirrorios to have
redundancy for the VIOS
LPAR.

Configuring Raid for Optimal Performance with 4K Drives

 Power8 now supports the usage

PDISKS of 4K drives.
4XXX  For IBM i 7.1, the same
RAID X (0,1,5,6,10)
recommendation of using Raid0
and directly mapping the hdisk to
the vhost still applies. This
configuration will give you the
4XXX best performance.
HDISK
 If you have all 4K drives in a
LV or File Backed Virtual Disks volume group and use LV or
File backed virtual disks with
allow520blocks=True IBM i 7.2, you can utilize new
vhost function in IBM i 7.2 to attach
vhost LV and File Backed virtual
disks and still be aligned on
the adapter hardware
boundaries.

Dual VIOS Using Split Backplane Summary

 When using the split

backplane on Power8 you
do not have any write cache
on the adapter which
VIOS VIOS
typically severely impacts
IBM i workloads. SSDs are
highly recommended with
Power Hypervisor
these adapters.

Internal SAS controller  If you use VIOS with these

adapters and virtualize the
disk to IBM i, you should not
use LV or File Backed
virtual disks for IBM i*.
12 Internal Drives
(6 or 8 Core)
*LV or File Backed may be
10 Internal Drives used with IBM i 7.2, if the
(4 Core)
physical disks are 4K sector
drives .

IBM Systems Technical Events | ibm.com/training/events may not be reproduced in whole or in part without the prior written permission of
IBM.
Dual VIOS Using Split Backplane with an EXP24S

 If you use an expansion

drawer you can use the I/O
Adapters with cache and
split the EXP24S between
the VIOSes. This gives
VIOS VIOS much better performance
than the split backplane of
the system adapter without
Power Hypervisor
cache.

 If you use VIOS with these

2 x EJ0L SAS controllers adapters and virtualize the
per VIOS disk to IBM i, you should not
use LV or File Backed
virtual disks for IBM i*.
EXP24S I/O drawer
*LV or File Backed may be
(MODE 2) with up to used with IBM i 7.2/7.3 if all
24 disks the physical disks in the
Volume Group are 4K
sector drives.

Alternative to Using VIOS => iVirtualization
 IBM i can virtualize disk, optical,
tape and Ethernet to another IBM i
LPAR.
 SAS adapter performance
degradation with IBM i virtualization
Hypervisor is significantly less than with the
wrong configuration on VIOS.
 Ability to create virtual disks of any
size
Internal SAS controller  Ability to set SSD preference
 Ability to use PowerHA to replicate
Virtual Disks on the Server
18 HDDs  Ability to use 4096 sector virtual
6 SDDs disks
 New Parameter on CRTNWSSTG in
IBM i 7.2
 Independent of the physical drive

• HSL – High Speed Link – POWER4 thru • SmartIOA – an IOA which doesn’t require an IOP,
POWER6 I/O bus interconnect, same as RIO reducing card slot usage and cost
but called HSL when used on System i • SSD – Solid State Drive
• IOA – Input/Output Adapter • System Node - preferred term for POWER8 E870
• IOP – Input/Output Processor and E880 processor enclosure (see CEC)
• LIC – Licensed Internal Code, part of IBM i • VFC – Virtual Fibre Channel, aka NPIV
operating environment • VIOC – virtual I/O Client
• MPIO – Multi-Path I/O • VIOS – Virtual I/O Server
• Native attach – no need to virtualize adapters • VSCSI – Virtual SCSI
or LUNs via VIOS • 12X – IBM’s implementation of InfiniBand bus
interconnect for Power servers

Storage attach terminology

• Native attach – consists of one of two methods

• Direct attach – switch or fabric device is not required between the adapter and the storage device
• Fabric attach – switch or fabric device is required between the adapter and the storage device

• Virtual attach – consists of one of two methods

• Virtual SCSI – A virtual I/O server (VIOS or IBM i) provides a virtual SCSI adapter and virtual SCSI
storage devices to a client operating system (IBM i, AIX, or Linux for VIOS; IBM i, AIX, Linux, or
Windows for IBM i)

• N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) – aka virtual fibre channel (VFC) – A virtual I/O server (VIOS)
provides a virtual fibre channel adapter to the client operating system (IBM i, AIX, or Linux)
