In the early 2000s, monofilament revolutionized tennis by allowing players to hit with even more
spin while maintaining very good control. Today, the majority of champions on the circuit use this
type of string. Rafa Nadal and his RPM Blast are the perfect example. Nevertheless, in recent
years a trend has emerged that focuses on the need for better feel at impact, with even more
power.
Henri Cochet, one of the famous Musketeers, regularly explained that the game of tennis was
played by ear.
In a sense, this is still the case as players search for a more “clear” sound with each stroke. This
inspired the Babolat teams to design the RPM Power. The parameters of the extrusion of the
string–the moment the string is formed–have been calibrated differently and optimized to provide
more flexibility resulting in more power. A specific coating has been added to give the string the feel
and sound that players expect.
The new color of RPM Power really make an impression. With its glossy “electric brown” color, it
stands out from all other strings.
Fans will have to wait to discover the RPM Power until December, the official worldwide launch
date for the general public. Beforehand, more than 10,000 test packs are circulating among coach-
es and brand ambassadors to discover and test this string with unique properties.
Designed for the harder hitting intermediate to advanced level player the unique 6-edge design of
this co-polyester will provide the ultimate blend of control and spin. A monofilament made out of a
new co-polymer mixture which also increases the durability, whilst being still comfortable to play.

In addition to equipment provided for the tournament, Wilson and the FFT will launch a range of
co-branded, premium Wilson/Roland-Garros products that combine elegance and high perfor-
mance, including tennis balls, rackets, string, tennis bags, and accessories. Tennis fans will have
the opportunity to purchase co-branded products on site at Roland-Garros during the Parisian
Grand Slam, online via the Roland-Garros e-boutique and via Wilson’s global sales network as of
January 2020.
During the tournament, Wilson will operate an experiential retail space, where Roland-Garros
guests can learn more about the brand and its vision for the future of tennis, as well as choosing
from a broad collection of innovative Wilson tennis products. Wilson will also provide its equipment
for tennis fans to use in the various tennis-themed activities in the FFT’s Ten ‘Up area.
Beyond the grounds of Roland-Garros, Wilson and the FFT will work together to develop new and
dynamic ways to extend the Roland-Garros experience globally through digital and experiential
activations as well as via unique content partnerships.
In addition to the partnership with Roland-Garros, Wilson also becomes the Official Partner of the
FFT and the Official Ball of the French national tennis championships and as such will be actively
involved in various programmes, such as “Raquettes FFT,” “Fête du Tennis,” “Tennis à l’école,”
Galaxie Tennis, “classement tennis,” and “Tournois Multi-Chances” (TMC).
“We are very proud to welcome Wilson as an Official Partner of Roland-Garros and the French
Tennis Federation. This partnership, which is built for the long term, is based on shared values
such as performance and innovation. This double signing with Wilson, a world-renowned brand,
will increase Roland-Garros’ international exposure while encouraging French people to take up
tennis, particularly young people, who represent the future of our clubs,” explained
Bernard Giudicelli, President of the French Tennis Federation.
“This partnership with the FFT is incredibly exciting for Wilson,” said Hans-Martin Reh, General
Manager, Wilson Racquet Sports. “Our passion for and commitment to creating the best
clay- court experience for players aligns with the FFT’s mission, and therefore, this is a partnership
that is very authentic at its core. And as an innovative, design-led brand who is also continually
looking to grow our sport, we are further excited by the FFT’s forward-leaning approach to growing
the presence of Roland-Garros around the world.”
The Davis Cup is changing its format. It must be an honor to participate in this
new formula?
In 1875, Babolat invented the string for tennis. Therefore, we are part of the origin and the evolution of this
sport. We are here–and will always be here–to innovate. We are obviously very proud to participate in this
first edition of the new formula. And we are committed to implementing our expertise to offer the best ser-
vice to the players who request it.
How does a fairly innovative final of this type affect your day-to-day work?
Unlike a tournament, we will follow teams and not players. Therefore, we must deliver a lot of rackets at the
same time so that teams can have optimized, high-performing equipment. In addition, we’re prepared to be
very responsive during these fast-paced matches, especially during the qualifying rounds at the beginning
of the week.
Can you tell us more about the customization service you will implement?
As with Roland-Garros, we offer players our racket service. This includes our stringing service as well as
preparation or adjustment of frames. We can verify their main racket specifications with them as we get
closer, in order to provide the best possible service throughout the tournament.
We will be in indoor conditions. Does this mean changes in string tension as compared to outdoor play?
Some players change their tension, others do not. We pay close attention to players’ needs, and will advise
them if they want to change their parameters. That’s why we’ll be in Madrid early, starting November 11
until November 24, to accompany the teams and refine their settings with them.

So is polyester all it's cracked up to be when it comes to spin, and should you recommend it to your
clients? The answer is yes, and no.
We talked about how stiff polyester strings are and how—in addition to rattling your teeth when you hit the
ball—they actually generate less power than other string materials like gut and PEEK. So then, how is it
possible for a string that generates less power to also generate more spin?
Crawford Lindsey and company at Tennis Warehouse University have studied spin extensively, and
published a number of highly technical reports on the mechanics and physics of spin on the TWU website.
Their comparative study, Which Strings Generate the Most Spin, concluded that polyester strings do
indeed generate more spin: on average, about 20% more than nylon and 7% more than natural gut. But
they also point out that:
1. The player has by far the larger role in generating spin. Racquet head speed, angle of racquet, and
angle of swing basically trump all other considerations. Other non-equipment factors include incoming ball
speed, angle and amount of topspin.
2. While string material, tension and stringing pattern do play a role, the key factor in this regard is
lateral string movement and snap-back. Polyester strings simply move laterally more easily than nylon or
gut, and thus produce more spin.
So what is it about polyester that allows it to move laterally? TWU suggests stiffness, tension loss, and

INDUSTRY NEWS
slipperiness as the main candidates. “Polyester is stiffer, loses more tension, and is slippery. The stiffer
material may be more able to overcome inter-string friction or move faster; the lower tension decreases
inter-string friction enabling more movement; and slipperiness (low coefficient of friction—COF) also
lessens inter-string friction. These may all act in interactive combinations to facilitate string movement and
snap-back.”
The key element here is inter-string friction. "Because polyester string is stiffer than other strings, it deforms
the ball more, which loses energy, and this results in less power for the same swing. Because the ball had
less speed, players swung faster to get more depth. But swinging faster (at an angle to the ball) causes
more spin, so they could swing faster again, and so on--more speed, more spin, more speed, more spin."
In short, high performance polyester strings work for the top pros because they are top pros. They swing
harder and faster, hit at better swing and racquet angles, and are more likely to hit with the sweet spot on
the racquet. Thus, they are able to do things with these strings that the rest of us can't. But even the pros
have their limits with polyesters. Many are stringing at lower tensions or going to hybrid set-ups to reduce
stiffness and impact shock. And you'll notice that when they do occasionally off-hit, the ball goes zooming
away like a rocket. High performance polyesters are like formula-one racecars: they take a lot of skill to
drive.
So, what's a poor recreational player to do—or even a pro who's sick of getting beaten up by his string? Is
there another way to generate spin?
Although Crawford Lindsey and company have yet to study it scientifically, reports we're getting at Ashaway
from players of all stripes indicate that PEEK-based strings like our MonoGut® ZX and ZX Pro do indeed
generate spin like polyesters, and do so more easily and more comfortably with less impact shock on
players' arms and shoulders. To understand how this works, go back to our discussion of Dynamic
Stiffness. Dynamic stiffness is a measure of a string's elasticity and ability to "snap back." The more a string
stretches, the more power it returns to the ball. The less it stretches, the more energy is lost in flattening the
ball and the less total power is available for rebound.
This is true regardless of whether a string stretches perpendicular to the string bed as in a straight hit, or
lateral to the string bed in generating spin, so long as friction does not get in the way. The reason both
natural gut and nylon generate less spin than polyester is because these strings are stickier than polyester.
Their snap-back gets stuck. Gut is less sticky than nylon, but is still stickier than polyester. Our evidence
suggests that PEEK is as slippery as polyester, especially when configured as a monofilament in MonoGut
ZX. So you get more spin with less work.
This gives you the best of both worlds. Rather than a highly specialized 'formula-one' string, PEEK strings
are like Porsches. You get all the power and handling of a finely built racing machine, but one that drives
easily and can be taken on the road. But don't take our word for it. Before you recommend them, take one
for a spin in your own racquet and see how it works for you.
Hosted by the Italian Tennis Federation from 6-7 November, the biggest-ever edition of the con-
ference welcomed leading speakers from across the sporting world, and was specifically devised
for tournament directors and staff working in junior and pro tennis departments of national tennis

ASHAWAY
Ashaway Crossfire® Family of Tennis Strings
Offers Range of Hybrid Stringing Options
For many years now, hybrid stringing — the practice of using
one string for the mains and another for the crosses — has been
popular among many types of players, including some of the very
best. Hybrid stringing allows players to fine-tune their racquets to
their particular style of play, much as legendary baseball players
have designed signature bats. They want more spin, more power, better drops, or simply some relief from
the arm jarring impact of today's ultra-stiff polyester strings. For these players, Ashaway Crossfire® strings
offer more combinations of main and cross strings than any other brand.
"Many players don't like the impact of polyesters," said Ashaway's Steve Crandall, "and normal everyday
players just don't get enough benefit from these strings to warrant the added cost. So more and more, they
turn to more traditional multi-filament and synthetic gut strings, which offer a good combination of perfor-
mance, economy and durability, or they start experimenting with hybrid stringing. Players of all stripes, in-
cluding many of the players I saw at this year's US Open, are using polyesters or aramids for stiffness and
durability, but mixing them with a softer string for playability."
Ashaway's Crossfire family includes six different material and string gauge combinations to suit even the
most discerning player's taste. The earlier models — Crossfire II, 17, and 18 — utilize aramid (Kevlar®)
mains and synthetic gut crosses to provide varying degrees of toughness and durability while enhancing
playability.
Crossfire Plus combines a 1.25 mm (17 gauge) blend of braided aramid and PTFE fibers for the mains, and
Synthetic Gut with an abrasion resistant wear layer for the crosses. The result is a tough, durable hybrid
combination with a softer feel, superior resilience, and maximum ability to impart spin. Crossfire Plus is
designed for chronic string breakers and top-spin players looking for a hybrid string combination that plays
better than a heavier gauge aramid, but wears just as well.
The most recent additions to the Crossfire hybrid line incorporate Ashaway's increasingly popular 100%
PEEK monofilament strings. Included are Crossfire ZX, which combines Ashaway's 17 gauge braided ara-
mid/PTFE Kevlar +Plus mains with MonoGut® ZX Pro cross strings; and Crossfire ZX Tour, which includes
Ashaway's co-polymer string MonoGut Original mains with MonoGut ZX for the crosses.
Crossfire ZX is the lighter of the two hybrids, combining 1.25 mm Kevlar +Plus mains for superior durabil-
ity and control with MonoGut ZX Pro crosses. The 17 gauge Kevlar +Plus is a blend of braided aramid and
silky soft PTFE fibers that softens the string's feel, while the 1.22 mm MonoGut ZX Pro is a 100% PEEK
monofilament that has the closest dynamic stiffness to natural gut of any synthetic string and sets the
benchmark for soft power and spin.
ERSA TAIWAN organized their 7th Annual Workshop / Symposium. Bernie Chen
and his team did another great job organizing every detail for the workshop including a great
venue with 12 machines from 4 different companies. Presentations were given in Badminton
Stringing, Tennis Stringing, Squash Stringing, Racquet Tuning and Stringing Machine fabrication
over two days. On the third day 30 attendees took 31 Certification tests in badminton, tennis and
squash. Stringers travelled from Australia and Hong Kong to take part in the 3 day event.
Few strings in the world represent what LUXILON ALU POWER represents in the tennis strings panorama.
Luxilon, as we know, was a real revolution within the tennis world, with the introduction of a series of polyester and co-polyester
filaments that have changed the approach to the game, technique and perhaps tennis itself.
As we know many players have said, the second revolution after the carbon fiber frames was the introduction of polyester
strings…. and Luxilon was part of this revolution!
ALU POWER, a name, a concept in itself and a name that in the same way represents a brand.
This string is currently on the market in 1.25mm gauge and in the ROUGH version; A SPIN version is available (pentagonal
shape 1.27mm gauge) as well as a SOFT version (10% softer than the "classic") and a series of colored versions ranging from
ICE BLUE (1.25 - 1.30mm) to LIMITED versions in 1.25mm.
This ALU POWER DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY is basically a 1.30mm version of the "classic" aluminum color version that
represents the absolute reference point in terms of competitive tennis string on the market.
What's the difference from this last version and the aluminum 1.25mm one?
The DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY string represents a variant, with a thicker cross section, compared to the 17G version, while
keeping unchanged the fundamental and distinctive characteristics of the thinner version.
From STATIC STIFFNESS point of view, the new ALU ANNIVERSARY 1.30 is a slightly stiffer filament than its "little" 1.25mm
sister, due to the larger diameter of the section and reactive material.
The DYNAMIC STIFFNESS is high ranked; the two filaments of the ALU series are rather similar even if you could feel this
thicker version more comfortable than the thinner at low tensions. It is not a comfort oriented string as we know; it's not a string
created for juniors or people with arm issues or injuries but the "pocketing" feeling and ball contact make the filament really
enjoyable for a competitive audience.
www.ersa-stringers.com
STRING TEST
Recommended tension is low and goes from 17-18kg to 21-22kg for "ordinary" use; it is strongly recommended to increase the
stringing tension only if you really need more control or if you string a, oversize or a spin pattern racquet.
The power of the string is outstanding as well as the reactivity to impact, all features accompanied by a very high level of control
connected with a very good spin proclivity due to snapback and progressive plasticization.
It's a high level competitive string so the duration period in terms of tension and dynamic stability is not bad at all but, of course,
it is strongly recommended to replace the string after 6-8-10 hours of play (depending from your level of play), if you have not
broken the string before this time.
The ALU POWER DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY 1.30mm is the ideal solution for the competitive player (going from intermediate
to professionals), looking for a string that allows you to mix power, control, feeling without sacrificing the ball feeling.
It is not the perfect string for the amateur level player as well as for juniors or seniors and it is not a solution to get control in the
absence of adequate technique or something ideal to feel like a "pro" player.....
It is a high level competitive string, intelligent in these terms and in this area, because it allows ADVANCED level and PRO
athletes to have a choice that improves the mechanical durability of the string without migrating quickly to the ultimate solution
of LUXILON 4G. A stiffer and tougher filament, amazing in its range, but less sensitive and a string which certainly does not
give you much in terms of comfort.
The fullbed with this string is excellent, as well the mono-mono hybrid solution with differentiated gauges (1.30mm mains -
1.25mm crosses), maximizing thrust and spin on control frames. You may appreciate it also in a traditional hybrid with a good
multifilament, a gut also in reverse combination or with LXN soft-poly ELEMENT or SMART on crosses.

STRING TEST
TIPS
QUICK FIX
We ran into a problem to string a Prince squash racket with Double Barrel Grommets in Taiwan.
The lower two double grommets are almost down to the point in the frame. We had machines from
4 different companies and all blocked the grommets. Being in Asia, I cut off a piece of a chop stick
and used it as an extender for the adapter. I found out from Nick Down, our squash expert that
you need to build a narrow adapter out of plastic to fit on the billiard and leave room to string this
racket.
TECNIFIBRE, as we know, has made history with multifilaments strings and uses advanced technologies to produce hi-tech
modern string, going from classic multifilaments to advanced monofilaments.
The new creation of the French brand is this HYBRID 3D string called HDMX who reminds with the name of HDX currently on
the market but marking a totally different kind of string and defining a new kind of "all in one" string which combines the comfort
and feeling of the multifilament with spin capability and playability of a polyester string.
If the goal of HDX was to obtain a modern multifilament string with a great playability and felling, the goal of HDMX is to have a
single string on the stringbed with the performance of a hybrid combination.
The string construction, available in 1.25-1.30-1.35mm gauges, is very sophisticated and mixes three different material to obtain
an "all round" universal string with a competitive performance, modern feeling and high power, control, spin and comfort
characteristics.
String static stiffness response is typical of polyamide-polyurethane strings (increasing values with incremental pulling action),
so if you want to have good comfort and feeling you have not to string over 23-25kg unless you use an oversize or very
powerful racquets. At 20-25kg the stiffness is typical of an intermediate polyester (0.70-0.75kg/mm), a sort of hybrid
combination between tough poly and soft multi.
Recommended tension is 21-25kg, a wide range let you choose the right tension to mix power and control depending from
technique, player power and racquet used but in this range you can get the best string response in terms of resilience and
liveliness.
This TECNIFIBRE HDMX 1.30mm is a very versatile string with an uniform and all round performance and nice combination of
power, control, spin and comfort; the string also has good dynamic durability, (you can use the string until you break), and low
dynamic stiffness (145-150g/mm).
A little pre-strech (5-10%) could be applied to improve string tension and mechanical stabilization without compromising the
feeling and reactivity of the string. (Our general suggestion is to decrease tension of the same amount of the pre-strech)
The feeling of the string is very modern, different from a classic TF polyurethane multi and the response something intermediate
from monofilament and multifilament, with good feeling, high comfort and with a remarkable spin attitude, not so common for
polyamide-polyurethane strings. The external "3SPL Silicium Pyrogene Lubritec" finish works great giving good durability, low
friction and good rotation on the ball due to an additional and unusual snapback for a multifilament.
The TF string is a very good option for all the players looking for something who performs like a mono but sounds like multi. A
very good option for medium to advanced players with some arm issues, ideal for juniors, for transitional juniors going from 26"
to 27", for seniors but also for serious intermediate racing players with a various or classic game.
TIPS
I have been travelling doing workshops and testing for two months. This allows me to learn
something new almost everyday from our managers and other stringers.
Here are 2 tips I learned from our Italy manager Marco Rossani.
In the middle and left photo shows a woodworkers plane. Marco fixed the racquet and had the
polyurethane handel off in 1 minute after taking off the grip and butt cap.
Marco has butt cap labels with a chip in it. You can scan the label and see on your PC whose
racket it is, stats on the racquet including if it was tuned, where and how much weight was added
and all the stringing history of the racquet.
