From this week's articles, I
learned some interesting statistics about social media platforms and their users. Looking at the statistics from major platforms, you can get an idea of how people around the world use them both for pleasure and business. For marketers, knowing the exact statistics behind social media platforms is crucial as it allows one to focus on targeting the most significant number of users. The first thing I learned was that as of May 2019, the total world population was 7.7 billion, and the total internet users were 4.4 billion, with 3.484 billion active on the various social media platforms. This is an impressive statistics as it clearly shows us that half of the world's total population is available online. The reason I found these statistics interesting is that they provide insight to entrepreneurs. Anybody willing to start a business gets an idea that the best way to reach your target customers is through the internet since the world's population is online. Second, when you look at the countries with the most extensive social media penetration, countries from Asia take the leading numbers. This hosts a vast potential for social media platforms like Facebook to target the organic population from those areas. The country-specific social data place these countries in the core marketing areas among the vast majority of the world. You will identify that countries in Asia are growing at a fast pace, most probably due to their online presence, which is the new way of doing business at a global level. The statistics also help us to know the social media platforms that are the dominant audience channels. The compilation by the Global Web Index Panel (October 2018) gives a clear picture of Facebook rules the supreme with the most significant number of online users. Again, the significant number comes from Asia, which shows that the people are regular visitors on social media. It's interesting data as we get to know the platform, which might seemingly be leading the raise as of now. Lastly, having known that the economy is rapid, a great deal would want to know the fast- growing social media networks so that they can focus their marketing efforts towards that line. According to Pew Research Internet Survey data, YouTube has seen the fastest growth rates in the recent time. However, the numbers may vary with countries as some like the UK prefer Facebook and Instagram. Nevertheless, these reports give us an insight into where we should be targeting our specific audience. Any brand that wishes to interact with the target audience will know the platform and the region to capitalize on. References. Digital innovation in Asia: What the world can learn. (2019).
