What are grades?
Paper grades can be used for graphic printing or packaging, include virgin pulp, recovered or recycled
wastepaper, be coated or uncoated, and be bleached or unbleached.

Containerboard
The most common application of containerboard
is to make boxes used for shipping and storage.
Containerboard is made up of two distinct parts:
linerboard and corrugated medium. Linerboard is used
for the outside sheets and the corrugated medium
is the wavy fluting in between them. The board and
fluting are glued together to make sheets. The sheets
are cut and printed, then converted into a box.
Containerboard styles and flute types are specifically
tailored to the customer’s requirements for strength,
padding, and display. Typically, using larger and
more numerous flutes and boards increases the box’s
strength and padding. The opposite is true for smaller
flutes and fewer layers of board.

Paper manufacturers have developed different ways
to construct containerboard to meet demand. In
Graphic paper
today’s market, there are two distinct trends:

that are used for shipping, and then opened
and used to displayed goods on the retail
sales floor. Boxes are easily recycled, making
them ideal for seasonal promotions.

Boxboard
Boxboard is the term for all other paperboard, except
containerboard. Boxboard is most commonly used to
package individual products. The largest segment in
this market is folding cartons. You can find folding
carton board on store shelves containing health care
products, frozen food items, tea bags, and thousands
of other products. Other boxboard segments include
packaging for liquids, plates and cups, tubes and
cores, and wallboard facing.
Tissue products
Specialty, wrapping Tissue products are separated into two categories:
and industrial papers at-home and away-from-home products. At-Home

towel dispensers in restrooms.

Wastepaper
Wastepaper is any kind of paper that has been used
for its original purpose, and then diverted from the
waste disposal stream to be recycled. Approximately
80% of the world’s corrugated boxes are recycled.
These old corrugated containers (OCC) are used to
make new containerboard. Many newspapers are
recycled as well. The value of the recovered paper
depends on the ease of processing it into new paper.
White graphic paper, which is entirely of one grade, is
high value because it is already bleached and easier
to recycle. Whereas, mixed paper is low value because
many paper types are bundled together making it
more difficult and expensive to clean.

Pulp characteristics
A critical component of any paper grade is the pulp
