U.K.
FLIR has been awarded a contract to provide the British Army with a nano unmanned helicopter called the Black Hornet 3 Personal
Reconnaissance System (PRS).
Initial work is under way to replace the British Army’s active fleet of 22 elderly Aérospatiale Gazelle AH1 helicopters, as the venerable
type nears retirement.
The timeline for any acquisition is driven by the out-of-service date for the Gazelle, which could be accelerated from a current target of
2025 if the type becomes more costly to support due to a shortage of spare parts.
Meanwhile, an acquisition process has begun linked to replacing part of the Royal Air Force’s Boeing CH-47 Chinook fleet.
The US has granted approval for the UK’s long-expected procurement of additional CH-47F Block II heavy-lift helicopters. The ratification covers the potential sale
of up to 16 Chinooks in an extended-range configuration and was outlined in a Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notification on 19th October 2018.
The RAF has a requirement for additional Chinooks to replace some of the oldest examples in service, including airframes that are now almost 40 years old.
A second Fleet Air Arm Commando Helicopter Force unit has begun re-equipping with the new Merlin HC4/4A, the ‘marinised’ version of the former RAF HC3/3As
that were transferred to the Royal Navy. The helicopter was delivered to 846 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, Somerset, on 12th
March 2019.
The first unit to re-equip with this new Commando variant was 845 NAS.
A total of 25 are being converted for shipborne operations, which includes installing folding main rotors and tail rotor pylon, upgraded avionics and repainting in
maritime grey colours.
Ascent Flight Training is now fully operational with its H135 Juno HT1 and H145 Jupiter HT1 helicopters as part of the UK Military Flying Training System (MFTS)
programme.
Airbus Helicopters completed delivery of 29 Juno HT1s and three Jupiter HT1s to Ascent for the MFTS programme earlier this year.

U.S.A
The U.S. Department of Defense announced in August 2019 that Boeing has received a $154.8 million
contract modification to procure new-build Apache AH-64E attack helicopters. This variant of the Apache is
considered the bridging strategy to the Army’s Future Vertical Lift program.
Sikorsky has obtained military qualification for its armed S-70 Black Hawk, which adds a number of
weapons to the utility helicopter.
According to its Aviation Plan, the USMC will acquire 200 CH-53K platforms for approximately $29
billion and field them across eight active, one fleet replacement, two reserve, and two developmental/
operational test squadrons. Deliveries began in May 2018.. Due to the earlier delays, this is the same year
that initial operating capability (IOC) is expected to be declared, with full operational capability (FOC),
defined as “the transition of the last active component squadron”, not expected until FY 2029.
Backup aircraft inventory/attrition reserve deliveries will complete in FY 2031 when the programme of record reaches 200 aircraft.
Sikorsky has also earmarked Germany, Israel, and Japan as CH-53K target markets, given that they already field CH-53s.
The US Army is looking to acquire a further 35 Airbus Helicopters UH-72A Lakota training and support platforms to add to the more than 400 already delivered.
The US Army is seeking to buy up to 120 AH-6SA (Saudi Arabia) and AH-6i (International) helicopters on behalf of Saudi Arabia and other allied customers.
The SB-1 Defiant compound helicopter developed by Sikorsky and Boeing completed its maiden flight on 21st March 2019. The rotorcraft is part of the US Army’s
Joint Multi-Role – Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) programme.
Defiant will help develop requirements for US Army utility helicopters for service in the 2030s as part of the wider Future Vertical Lift (FVL) programme. The Army
will choose between the SB-1 and the rival Bell V-280 Valor tiltrotor in a forthcoming ‘fly-off’, selecting one design for further development.
Four companies will bid for the Army’s Future Tactical UAS programme, which will replace the RQ-7 Shadow drone. The Army announced in July 2019 that Arcturus
UAV, L3 Technologies, Textron subsidiary AAI Corp. and Martin UAV will to compete for each order of the firm-fixed-price procurement contract running through
2022.
The US Air Force has announced Boeing’s MH-139 as the winner of the UH-1N ‘Huey’ replacement helicopter competition, awarding a firm-fixed-price contract
ultimately worth $2.38bn. The USAF expects the first operational helicopter to be delivered in Fiscal Year 2021.
The USAF’s new Combat Rescue Helicopter (CRH), the HH-60W, achieved its first flight on 17th May 2019.
The USAF programme of record calls for 112 new CRH aircraft to replace existing HH-60G Pave Hawks at a total cost of around $7.1bn. Developmental testing should
last until September 2020 and initial operational test and evaluation is due to begin in fiscal year 2021.
The US Department of State Air Wing’s (DOSAW) fleet of 13 S-61T Tritons have been put up for sale after it was determined that there was no longer a mission
requirement for them.
After over 30 years of service, the HH-60H Seahawk has finally been retired from US Navy service. They will be transferred to the US Coast Guard and, as part of the
latter’s service life extension programme, they will undergo structural modifications to convert them to the MH-60T configuration before entering service as part of
the Coast Guard’s medium-range recovery helicopter fleet.
