Calculations, Time and Distance

1. Here are the two approaches to improve speech communication in a reverberant space

 Modulation filtering

This approach changes the temporal dynamics of the speech. In this approach, the temporal
modulation of the low frequency components of speech is enhanced but below 16 Hz (Splab.net,
2019).

 Steady-state suppression

The steady-state portion of the speech ( having high energy) is suppressed in steady-state
suppression to decrease overlap masking (Splab.net, 2019).

2. The ideal reverberation time would be approximately 1-1.1 seconds (AV Roomservice, 2019)
because the shorter reverberation time is preferable.

3. The theatre with good acoustics allows sound to travel through long distances and people are
able to hear sound (play or music) clearly even they are away from the stage. However, poor
acoustics buildings does not allow sound to travel properly from side to the other side very well
and people does not hear the sound clearly even a loud voice could not be heard (Octane Seating,
2019).
The impact of audience on acoustics in the room depend on the following factors
 Hall shape
 Audience absorbing properties
A sound that can arrive directly and early can enhance with addition of an audience because the
frequency of incidence bass attenuation shifts. In low ceilings halls, the sound energy travel
towards the listener according to ceiling reflections (Acoustics.org. 2019) as the presence of
audience does not impact the ceiling reflection.
4. The reverberation time is different because it depends on the following factors
 Size of the space
 Shape of the space
 Amount of absorbing surface
2

 Quality of absorbing surface

 Positioning of absorbing surface.
 Frequency of the sound

If the sound absorption in the room will be more, the reverberation time will be lower.
