1. State Manning’s equation.
2. Define Hydraulic jump.
3. Define Displacement Thickness.
4. State the equation for Lift Force.
5. State the expression for force, when the jet strikes the curved plate at the centre when the plate
is stationary.
6. State the speed for the maximum efficiency of a series of curved planes.
7. State the expression for overall efficiency.

10. Name the impeller which is used for centrifugal pumps dealing with muds.

PART – B (5 x 3 = 15 MARKS)
11. Define Hydraulic jump with a neat sketch.
12. Define Momentum thickness and Energy thickness.
13. A jet of water, 75mm in diameter, issues with a velocity of 30m/s and impinges on a stationary
plate which destroys its forward motion. Find the force exerted by the jet on the plate and work
done.
14. Define draft tube.
15. Define Suction head and Delivery Head.

PART – C (5 x 15 = 75 MARKS)
16. A trapezoidal channel has side slope of 3 horizontal and the slope of its bed is 1 in 2000.
Determine the optimum dimensions of the channel, if it is to carry water at 0.5m3/s. Take
Chezy’s constant as 80.
(OR)
17. A 3.6m wide rectangular channel conveys 9m3/s of water with a velocity of 6m/s.
a. If there a condition for hydraulic jump to occur? If so, calculate the height, length and
strength of the jump.
b. What is loss of energy per kg of water?

18. A plate 25m long x 1.25m wide is moving under water in the direction of its length. The drag
force on the two sides of the plate is estimated to be 8500N. Calculate
a. The velocity of the plate
b. The boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge of the plate and
c. The distance xc at which the laminar boundary layer existing at the leading edge transforms
into turbulent boundary layer.
Take for water: v = 1 x 10-6 m2/s
(OR)
[P.T.O]
19. A kite weighing 9.8N and having an area 1m 2 makes an angle of 7o to horizontal when flying in
a wind of 36km/h. If pull on the string attached to the kite is 49N and it is inclined to the
horizontal at 45o, calculate the lift and drag coefficients.

20. A jet of water of 20mm diameter 20mm strikes a 200mm x 200mm square plate of uniform
thickness with a velocity of 10m/s at the centre of the plate which is suspended vertically by a
hinge on its top horizontal edge. The weight of the plate is 98N. The jet strikes normal to the
plate.
a. What force must be applied at the lower edge of the plate so that plate is kept vertical?
b. If the plate is allowed to deflect freely, what will be the inclination of the plate with
vertical due to the force exerted by jet water?
(OR)
21. A jet of water moving at 12m/s impinges on a concave shaped vane to deflect the jet through
120o when stationary. The vane is moving at 5m/s. Find
a. The angle of jet that there is no shock at inlet,
b. The absolute velocity of the jet at exit both in magnitude and direction and
c. The work done per second per N of water
Assume that vane is smooth.

22. The water available for a Pelton wheel is 4m 3/s and the total head from the reservoir to the
nozzle is 250m. The turbine has two runners with two jets per runner. All the four jets have the
same diameters. The pipe is 3km long. The efficiency of transmission through the pipeline and
the nozzle is 91% and efficiency of each runner is 90%. The velocity co-efficient of each nozzle
is 0.975 and co-efficient of friction ‘4f’ for the pipe is 0.045. Determine
a. The power developed by the turbine
b. The diameter of the jet and
c. The diameter of the pipeline.
(OR)
23. Briefly explain the selection procedure of Turbines.

24. A single acting reciprocating pump has a diameter of 150mm and stroke length 350mm. The
centre of the pump is 3.5m above the water surface in the sump and 22m below the delivery

and 30m long. If the pump is working at 30r.p.m. determine
a. The pressure heads on the piston at the beginning, middle and end of both suction and
delivery strokes
b. The power required to drive the pump.
