ORAL NARRATIVE TEXT BY USING VIDEO “RABBIT AND


TURTLE”
(A Quasi Experimental Study to the eighth grade students at SMPN 10 langsa)

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter consist of the background of the study, Research Problem,


Objectives of the Problem, Significance of the study.

A. Background of the Study


Nowday, Devi Angga Gunantar (2016:141) English becomes one of the most
spoken languages by world citizens. Many people use it as to easier communicate
with another country who use respective regional languages,by english language
then the topic of their conversation will be connected. Not only that, English is also
very necessery in the largest companies because there are not a few companies like
that need employees who have English language skills.
Basically, English has four skills to get maximum result. They are Listening,
Speaking, Reading and writing. This research, penulis mengkhususkan pada
speaking skill. Umi Hani Handayani (2018:2) Speaking is one of productive skills,
which is considered importaint. It is important for many language learners to be
involved in spoken languages. By speaking, students can transfer all ideas,
opinions, and also to present what students listen. taliking about speaking skills is
very relevant to the experiment that the writer will do that is to Improving Students
Retelling Story Ability In Oral Narrative Text By Using Video “The Rabbit and
The Turtle”
Darwissyah Irwan D (2016:4) Retelling is a procedure that enables a child to
play large role reconstructing stories. Retelling story, then, is post reading and post
listening a story in which readers and listeners tell what they remember from what
they have read or listened. This research use the video to improve that ability. It is
also the same for improving speaking ability. students can to retell the story to be
confidence and without see the video which have been heard before with smoothly
and correctly. Therefore students are ask to have good speaking skills so that they
can transfer what they hear.
This is a big problem for the class that has students not only like English
subject, they have their favorite subjects, so they are lazy to learn other subjects
they don’t like, Especially at eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Langsa.
Based on observation class that acquire by writer when the teacher speak english
but they ask their teacher to speak indonesian. In the classroomthey not confidence
to speak english in front teacher and friends. They think write easily then more
speak. But from the other side they don’t know that both of them are also very
important in the learning process especially during the exam. According to Bayu
setiawan (2017) The importance of using media is considered to enchance the
quality of learning. Using appropriate media is neede to help and involve the
students actively to acquire new concepts, ideas, skills and language competence. It
is useful also to motivate students to be more active in the class and learning to be
more interest. The writer will use the media in the form of video so that learning
takes place not monotonous. Then they were asked to watch the video carefully and
to be repeat. The video is in accordance with the material to be study namely
narrative text. Narrative text is a paragraph that tells about ewvents or legends that
have happen in the past. One types of narrative text is fabel story, and the video eill
be combine with a cartoon image to make it look interest.
B. Identification of the Study
Based on background of the study above, the writer involves the identification
of study are:
1. Most of the students are still poor in English Retelling story ability.
2. Most of students are looked less antusias in learning Retelling story ability

C. Limitation of the Study


To avoid misunderstanding and to clarity the study, the writer limits the study
in Improving Students retelling Story Ability in Oral Narrative Text By using
Video “The Rabbit and The Turtle” at The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri
10 Langsa.

D. Formulation of the Study


Based on the limitation of study, the formulation study in this research is as
follows “is using video effective to improving students Retelling story ability in
oral Narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Langsa?

E. Objective of the Study


From the previous discussion in the background of the study, the writer finds
out that using video in retelling story ability is quite useful. Therefore the writer
would like to prove speaking skills.

F. Significance of the Study


The result of this study are expexted to provide useful information and
suggestions for two people they are :
1. The teachers
The result of this study is expexted to be useful for english teachers to get
solution in English languages teaching.
2. The students
The result of this studywill help and give an opportunity for students to be
active in the class and to get good speaking with retelling story in oral
narrative text.
