Business communication 1

Communication is an important part of our life which includes the process of sending and
receiving messages. Effective communication helps in delivering varieties of important benefits.
I had learned the importance of business communication which helps in solving problems
quickly, increasing productivity, enhancing professional image, and making a strong business
relationship. The aim of this reflective journal includes the understanding of business
communication and theories of business communication which is important for growth in life.
Written communication is discussed which helps in writing effectively. Interpersonal and
intercultural communication helps an individual in understanding the cultures and messages
are exchanged in a manner that helps in influencing the different cultural perceptions and
symbol systems. I had learned that effective communication is required professionally and
ethically. There are various factors that impacts communication are flattened management
hierarchies, managing knowledge and change, globalization, and increasingly diverse
workforce, and innovative communication technologies (Thompson and Filik, 2016).

Effective Communication helps in understanding the impacts of globalization and increase in


diverse workforce. At the workplace, social media impacts on communicating effectively. I had
learned about the oral presentation which helps in preparing various types of speeches and
now I am able to plan and prepare and deliver the presentation effectively. I had learned about
social media as it is used as an effective tool for communicating at the workplace. Oral
presentation and public speaking discussion help in understanding the importance of
presentation in which oral presentation effectively increased the confidence for public speaking
and I can speak in public without any hesitation (Fernandez and Rainey, 2017). Earlier I was
unable to understand the visual communication and its principles but understanding the visual
design and consistency helped in attracting the audience towards my presentation and giving
information more clearly to audience. Graphs, bars, and tables in presentation brings accuracy
and sorting of data, simplifying the process. In order to speak in prepared speeches, impromptu
speeches, manuscripts speeches and oral briefing and seminars and webinars (Kerby and
Romine, 2009).

The objectives and strategies in the oral presentation are to inform, persuade and to entertain.
Social media helps to satisfy the internal organizational needs like building employee
engagement and converting individual knowledge to training resources. In the model of social
media engagement, 6C are helped me in interacting with others which are company, content,
community, control, customers, and conversations. There are various strategies that help in
communicating on social media effectively are audience, objectives, strategic plan, tactics,
tools, and metrics.

Social media provides the pros and cons as social media helps in enhancing connectivity and
overcoming the issue of communication but in my opinion social media is not effective as it
brings a lack of confidence. It is analyzed that social media helps in reaching customers and
audiences easily (Song, et al., 2017). For effective communication, listening is also required and
it must be active as it helps in encouraging skills for inviting the speakers to continue and
reflecting skills to mirror the content and feelings,

Culture is learned behavior and patterns of recognition of what is going on and dictates rules
about how to behave. In culture, ethnocentrism approach in an individual includes own culture
which is used for interpreting others culture. In written communication, plain English writing
style must be adopted which includes equity, efficiency, and effectiveness. Culture includes the
values and norms of language, social structure, economic philosophy, religion, and education.
At the workplace, culture must not create conflicts in employees (West, 2012). In business
communication plays a significant role which includes the objective of informing employees
which are related to tasks and policies which are required and other issues that they may face.
It is necessary to create a community in the organization.

In leadership, effective communication plays a crucial role as I had learned that to lead team
communication is important for building communication and clarifying the role and tasks.
Communication helps in motivating the employees in an effective manner. It is necessary for
leaders to use their position for group visions and direction to employees. I will be
implementing the strategies and theories for communicating with team as a leader. I will inform

the followers and others about the situations and things that are required for them to
understand.

Business communication will help in searching for a position and writing an effective resume. It
also helped me in understanding the process of employment interviews as it is necessary to
understand for getting the job. The main stages of the interview include the pre-interview,
opening of interview, the body, the close and the post-interview stage (Koester and Lustig,
2015).

I understood the meaning of listening as it is an interpretative process as effective listening


includes comprehend, storing, classifying and labeling information. Active listening helps in
getting attention and providing feedback as it allows speakers to express feelings and
identifying the situations (Dwyer, 2012).

Verbal and non-verbal communication is the necessity of every individual as non-verbal


communication as the message must include the personal to the individuals. Nonverbal
communication includes body movement and I understood the importance of body movement
which helps in explaining the feelings with the help of behavior, characteristics and artifacts. In
order to maintain behavior and relationship, self-awareness and concept are required for
effective business communication (Trenholm, 2017).

Written communication is necessary at the workplace for writing a reflective journal. Written
communication helps in enhancing the readability which is used for measuring in documents
for reading and understanding. In order to write a letter the format must be used which makes
the reader understand the purpose of the letter. I had understood the email etiquette which
must include the purpose and layouts and readers can access the techniques which include the
emails are of different types which include, request emails, announcement emails, transmittal
emails, and authorization emails.
