IN CLASS EXAMPLE

SITUATION 1

a) Find the probability that the selected candidate is a degree holder?

P(degree)= 3/6 = 0.5

b) Find the probability that the selected is NOT having working experience?
P(working’) = 1- P(working) = 1-0.333 =0.667

c) Find the probability that selected candidate is a degree holder AND having working
experience?
P(degree n working) = 1/6 = 0.167
d) Find the probability that the selected candidate is a degree holder OR having
working experience?
P(degree U working) = p(degree) + P(working) – P(d n w)
P(d U w) = 0.5 +0.333 – 0.167 = 0.666

e) Given that the selected candidate is having working experience, what is the
probability that candidate has a degree in finance?
P(d/w) = p(d n w) / p(w) = 0.167 / 0.333 = 0.502

f) Is working experience mutually exclusive with academic qualification?

P(d U w) = P(d) + P(w)
P(d U w) = 0.666
P(d) + P(w) = 0.5 + 0.333 = 0.833
P(d U w) ≠ P(d) + P(w), thus working experience is not mutually exclusive with
academic qualification

g) Are working experience and academic qualification independent to each other?

P(w n d) = p(w) x p(d)
P(w n d) = 0.167
p(w) x p(d) = 0.333 x 0.5 = 0.167
P(w n d) = p(w) x p(d), thus they are independent to each other

a) Find the probability that the selected candidate having an average

communication skill?
P (average communication) = 0.307

b) Find the probability that the selected is NOT a diploma holder?

P(diploma’) = 1- P(diploma)= 1- 0.227 = 0.773

c) Find the probability that selected candidate is a diploma holder AND having
poor communication skill?
P(Diploma n poor )= 0.04

d) Find the probability that the selected candidate is a diploma holder OR having
poor communication skill?
P(diploma u poor) = p(diploma) + p(poor) – p(diploma n poor)
= 0.227 + 0.347 - 0.04
\ = 0.534

e) Given that the selected candidate is having a certificate, what is the probability that
candidate has a good communication skill?
P (G l C ) = P (G n C) / P (C)
= 0.16/0.2
= 0.8
f) Is having a diploma mutually exclusive with good communication skill?
P(D u G) = 0.107
P(D) + P(G) = 0.227 + 0.347 = 0.574
P(D u G) ≠ P(D) + P(G); No, they are not mutually exclusive

g) Are having master degree and having good communication skill independent
to each other?
P(A n B) = P(A) x P(B)
P(M n G) = 0.053
P(M) x P(G) = 0.307 X 0.347 =0.107
P(M n G) ≠ P(M) x P(G); No , they are not independent.
