NORMAL CONSISTENCY
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction
A minimum amount of water required to initiate the chemical reaction between water and cement in
order to form a paste is known as cement consistency. Standard consistency is that cement consistency is
known as standard consistency, allowing the Vicat plunger to penetrate from the bottom of the Vicat mold to
5-7 mm level. The durability of concrete, as we all know, depends on the quality material used in it. One of
them is cement. We need to add the right amount of water to achieve the required strength of cement. By
standardizing cement consistency, we know how much water is needed to produce an effective cement that
will ultimately produce good concrete quality. Standard Consistency of an ordinary Portland cement varies
between 22-30%.
1.2. Objectives
To determine the amount of water required to form a workable cement paste using the Vicat
apparatus.
2. Methodology
2.1. Materials and Equipment
The (Insert Materials Lists and a separate page for the Drawing of Materials)
2.2. Procedure (See Appendix for photos)
1. Prepare 500 g of cement
2. Mix cement of with measured quantity of clean water.
3. Mold cement paste into the shape of a ball. With gloved hands toss ball six times through a free path
of about six inches from one hand to another.
4. Press ball into larger end of Vicat ring and completely fill the ring with paste.
5. Remove excessive paste without compressing the sample and place the ring under the plunger of
the Vicat apparatus.
6. Place plunger in contact with top of paste and lock. Set the indicator on the scale to zero.
7. Release the plunger and record settlement of plunger in mm after 30 seconds.
8. Repeat process with trial paste with varying percentages of water until normal consistency is
observed.
9. Record the weight of water added to 500 g of cement, when the plunger penetrates 10 1mm (9mm
to 11 mm) in 30 seconds.
10. W = g of water
