COMMON

BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS
FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
Students will rise up to meet your high expectations

Before students walk into class…

o Students lined up correctly
o Students behaving appropriately – No swearing, No arguing, No bullying
o No calling out
o Check uniform – send student to change, if unsure still send them anyway.
o No earphones – completely taken out and placed in bag not pocket.
o No phones – hip pocket or bag only. Girls to take out of shirt pocket.
o Students listening for instructions - No talking while waiting for instructions
o Students walk in an orderly manner
o Good time to build rapport

Before students start their lessons.
ü Believe it or not we need to teach them this and show them what it looks like.

o Student’s OWN equipment ready – Calculator, pen, pencils etc
o Students behaving appropriately – No swearing, No arguing, No bullying
o Students Maths work books ready
o Students listening for instructions
o Students following instructions
o No electronics unless used for educational reasons.
o Students ready to learn.

During class

o Students working towards task
o Students listening appropriately
o Students behaving appropriately – No swearing, No arguing, No bullying
o Students respecting others right to learn.
o Have students meet your expectations?

End of the class

o Students put their equipment away neatly
o Students return any books in an orderly and respectful manner
o Students behaving appropriately – No swearing, No arguing, No bullying
o Students push all chairs in and complete silence
o Students clean classroom
o Students exit in an orderly manner

Do not accept…

o Lateness without a written note
o Any kind of verbal or physical threat towards yourself or other students
o Disrespectful behavior at any level
o Chewing gum in class
o Mobile phones in class
o Music in class
o Food or drink in class – Water bottles allowed but not in IT LABS
o Frequent toilet breaks

RECORD THE ISSUE FOR EACH STUDENT – CREATES PICTURE, DIFFICULT TO ARGUE WITH IN THE
FUTURE, SHOWS CONSISTENTLY BAD BEHAVIOUR, SHOWS THAT YOU VALUE GOOD BEHAVIOUR.

Too many warnings indicate to the students that I am not serious about my expectation and I tolerate
students who ignore my expectations.

1st consequence

Ú Glare
Ú Quiet word
Ú Verbal warning/ Written warning
Ú Shaking your head in disagreement
Ú Face and body language saying NO
Ú Mouth out “STOP” or “NO”

2nd consequence

Ú Name on the board
Ú Detention – Aim to have a talk and be explicit about my expectation. Not to argue it. Create a
strategy to avoid similar behavior in the future
Ú Keep them back – Quick word, maybe organize a strategy to avoid future infractions
Ú Informal conversation with HOLA/2IC
Ú Start to think about how the classroom environment is contributing to this problem
Ú Start to think about how you can use positive language and enthusiasm to turn the problem
around

Ú Detention – no negotiation.
Ú Outline future consequences for similar misbehavior
Ú Possible phone call home to alert parent to minor behavior and to mitigate future behavior
issues
Ú Buddy out to another class – No arguments, state my expectation.
o No re-entry without addressing this behavior clearly
o Make student accountable for their behavior and get them to agree to behave
o Outline future consequence – Does not start at 1st consequence… it’s 4th consequence
o Possible informal written contract
o Record it on SIS (Non negotiable)
Ú Consider moving the student to another place
Ú Informal conversation with Adam/2IC
Ú How the classroom environment is contributing to this problem
Ú How you can use positive language and enthusiasm to turn the problem around

4th Consequence

Ú Buddy out to another class
Ú Informal meeting with Student/ HOLA/ Year Co before re-entry into class
Ú Behavior monitoring card – your class only/ or Across the board
