NUR 363 – Nursing Research

Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to acquaint the student with research literature and the process
of utilization of research to guide nursing practice/interventions.

Student Approach to Assignment


I approached this assignment by combining what I learned about hospital acquired infections
(HAIs) and the materials in use to help prevent these infections when bathing patients. This topic
interested me and I wanted to know if using certain cloths actually had an effect on patient care
an HAIs, so I decided to research this topic to later present via an oral presentation.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio


I am including this assignment in my portfolio because it portrays my ability to research nursing
literature as well as present the literature. This assignment also exemplifies my ability to put
together education, clinical experience, and research to think of ways to improve patient care,
safety, and health.

Critical Thinking
• Evaluates nursing care outcomes through the acquisition of data and the questioning of
inconsistencies. For this paper, I reviewed research studies that explored the effectiveness
of 2% CHG cloth baths. I also checked the consistency of the data and evidence
supporting the use of 2% CHG cloth baths.
Nursing Practice
• Applies appropriate knowledge of major health problems to guide nursing practice. With
what I learned in class and clinical, I identified that hospital acquired infections (HAIs)
were a major health problem throughout the health care system and all hospitals. I used
this knowledge to identify a relevant research topic that lead me to researching 2% CHG
cloth baths and how they help prevent HAIs.
Communication
• Demonstrates skills using technology, informatics, and communication devices that
support safe nursing practice. This oral presentation demonstrated my skills to use
technology and informatics to communicate with my peers as well as whoever watched
the presentation about improved nursing practice through the use of 2% CHG cloth baths.
Teaching
• Uses information technologies to communicate health promotion, risk reduction, and
disease prevention. Uses informatics to enhance one’s own knowledge base to support
teaching. Through this oral presentation I was able to participate in health promotion, risk
reduction and disease prevention by researching and teaching about the use of 2% CHG
cloths and their ability to reduce hospital acquired infections.
Research
• Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing
research. Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing
interventions. Shares research findings with colleagues. For this oral presentation, I
accessed nursing research to support my findings. I evaluated this research to identify the
efficacy and effectiveness of 2% CHG cloth baths versus nonantimicrobial cloth or soap
and water baths in the ICU. I then shared these research findings with my colleagues via
an oral presentation.
