NUMBERS, NUMBER SENSE, AND COMPUTATION

(2)1.18 add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping
(2)1.1 read, write, order, and compare numbers from 0 - 999 [NS 1.3.6]
Objective(s) Students will be able create a timeline of the events by putting the events
in order from earliest to latest.

Students will use place value blocks to add two numbers together with
regrouping.
Materials Pencil, Paper, Place Value Blocks, Magnetic Place Value Blocks Toy Event
Notecards (Teacher Created), Timeline of the Television, Blank Notecards,
Blank Timeline with Dates
Procedures 1)Teacher will begin lesson by introducing timelines by showing the
timeline of the television. The timeline includes important events in the
televisions history including the first commercially sold television, the first
color television, the first flat screen, 4k, etc. Teacher will make note of the
years and point out how they are going in order and never go backwards.

2) Teacher will review on the board some methods to solve addition with
regrouping on the board. The teacher will use the magnetic place value
blocks to show how to add 324 and 296 together. After using the blocks,
the teacher will ask students to come to the board and share their
strategy. After a few students, teacher will regain focus of the class.

3) Teacher will then tell the class that they will be creating a timeline of
toy history. Teacher will hand out a set of toy event notecards to each
group. The teacher will explain that on one side of the card is an important
event in toy history and on the other side is an addition with regrouping
problem. The notecards are not in order and the students need to use
their math skills to help put the events in order. Teacher will tell the
students that they must solve the math problems on the back of the
notecards and then compare the sums. The events must be placed in order
from least to greatest with the lowest sum will go onto the timeline as the
first event and the event with the highest sum will be the last event.

4) The students will then work with their groups solving the addition
problems using the place value blocks and their various methods. Teacher
will circulate around the room helping with student misconceptions.
5) After the students have had enough time to finish, the teacher will go
over the correct answers and the proper timeline order. The teacher will
also give the years to the students about the events and tell a little more
information about them.

Assessment Students will think of 5 events from their lives and create a timeline. They
will take 5 blank notecards and on each one, they will create a 3 digit
addition problem that will require regrouping. They will then look at the
sums and arrange them from least to greatest. They will then connect the
earliest event to the lowest sum. They will continue until each sum has a
corresponding event. Students will turn in notecard events for evaluation.
