2. What are the boussinesq (1885) assumptions for point loads?
3. What are assumptions in Terzaghi’s bearing capacity theory?
4. Define net ultimate bearing capacity?
5. List out the type of pile based on material used.
6. What are the types of hammer?

Part B – (5 × 6 =30 Marks)
11.(a) Describe with neat sketch stress isobar.

(Or)

11.(b) A concentrated load of 1000 kN is applied at the ground surface. Compute the
vertical pressure (i) at a depth of 4 m below the load, (ii) at a distance of 3 m at the
same depth. Use Boussinesq's equation

12.(a)A square footing 2.5 m x 2.5 m is built in a homogeneous bed of sand of unit
weight 20 kN/m3 and having a angle of shearing resistance of 36 0. The depth of
footing is 1.5m below the ground surface. Calculate the safe load that can be carried
by a footing with a factor of safety 3 against complete shear failure. Use Terzaghi’s
analysis. For Ф = 360. Nc=65.4 , Nq=49.4, Nr=54.0 C=0

(Or)

12.(b) Describe with neat sketch bearing capacity failure.

13.(a) Describe with neat sketch on end bearing pile & friction pile.

(Or)

13.(b) Describe with neat sketch on Screw pile & compaction pile.

14.(a) Describe with neat sketch cantilever sheet pile.

(Or)
14.(b) State and explain box caissons Briefly explain well point system?

15.(a) Describe the procedure used for auger boring with neat sketch.

(Or)

15.(b) Explain briefly flying & horizontal shores.

Part C – (5 × 6 =30 Marks)
16.(a) Derive vertical pressure due to line load using Boussinesq formula.

(Or)

16.(b) Three parallel strip footings 3 m wide each and 5 m apart center to center
transmit contact pressures of 200, 150 and 100 kN/m2 respectively. Calculate the
vertical stress due to the combined loads beneath the centers of each footing at a
depth of 3 m below the base. Assume the footings are placed at a depth of 2 m below
the ground surface. Use Boussinesq's method for line loads.

17.(a) Describe with neat sketch Plate load test.

(Or)

17.(b) Design a strip footing to carry a load of 750 KN/m at a depth of 1.6 m in a c-
Ф soil having a unit weight of 18 KN/m3 and shear strength parameters as C=20
kN/m3 and Ф = 250 determine the width of footing ,using a partial factor of safety of
2.5 against shear failure. Use Terzaghi’s analysis. For Ф = 250. Nc=25.1 , Nq=12.7,
Nr=9.7.

18.(a) Describe with neat sketch Pile load test.

(Or)

18.(b) . Design of friction pile group to carry a load of 3000KN including the weight of
pile cap at a site where the soil is uniform clay to a depth of 20 m, underlain by rock.
Average unconfined compressive strength of clay is 70 KN/m2. The clay may be
assumed to be of normal sensitivity and normally loaded, with liquid limit 60%. A
factor of safety of 3 is required against shear failure. Compute the settlement of
group assuming load to be transferred 2/3 length of pile Take NC=9

19.(a) Describe with neat sketch Pneumatic Caissons?

19.(b) Describe with neat sketch Braced sheeting in cuts and double walled
cofferdam?

20.(a) The observed Standard Penetration Test, values in a deposit of fully

submerged sand was 45 at a depth of 6.5m. the average effective unit weight of soil
9.69 KN/m3. The other data given are hammer efficiency 0.8, drill rod length
correction factor 0.9, bore hole correction factor is 1.05. Determine the corrected SPT
