1. How had sensation influenced Oishi’s perception and that of the samurais’ toward Kai–whom

they called “half-breed” in the beginning?

>At first, they perceive Kai as an unworthy man because he is a half-breed, and that he

shouldn’t be trusted. But things changed when Kai helped them avenge Asano and fight Kira. They

saw his determination and good heart.

2. What form/s of altered states of consciousness was/were shown in the film? Cite a specific scene

to support your answer.

>A form of altered state of consciousness commonly shown in the film was sleeping. In

the film, it could be seen that Lord Asano has taken several sleeps. Also, Mika has been seen

sleeping in the film. Next form of altered consciousness is when Kira’s Witch bewitched Lord

Asano causing him to hallucinate that Kira is raping her daughter, Mika. This led to Asano injuring

Kira.

3. What is the common motive shared by the Samurais and the Ronins? Explain how it differed

with the way each group had valued it.

>The motive that the Samurais and Ronins share is the goal to protect their realm, and

provide peace and order. Both has the motive to serve their lords and masters. However, they differ
on the intensities of the motivation to serve their lord. Samurais are those with masters, strictly

following orders of their lords and the shogun. The Ronins, on the other hand, are those without

masters.

4. What were the variety of emotions shown in the film? What kind of emotion had led Kai and

the Ronins’ fight against Kira, and win back Asano?

 The burning desire to avenge their master and their land is what led Kai and the Ronins to

fight against Kira, despite the Shogun telling them otherwise. We can see anger,

disappointment, sadness, grief, vengeance, and also the feeling of satisfaction in the film.

5. What part of the movie had struck you the most?

 I do love the part where Kai led the other Ronins to the Tengu forest where they will

try to get some Tengu swords. The one where Oishi was shown deceiving illusions that

his co-Ronins were being killed. The one where there is someone telling him to draw

his sword. But Oishi did not. He successfully passed this test. Also, Kai managed to

get the sword first before the Tengu master could even touch it. Their victory in this

scene is what struck me the most.
