GY-HM850 & GY-HM890 camcorders

LIVE STREAMING
QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
UDP/TCP STREAMING (PUSH)

These simple instructions show how to stream to a Video Lan Player (VLC) on your laptop
from the GY-HM850 and GY-HM890 camcorders. Please note that you will need to have
some basic knowledge of IP technology and how to configure a firewall on your network.

Streaming in this example will be via a cable-to-cable connection; you can use any other
WiFi or 3G/4G connection by following this network setup principle too. With a WAN
connection, the destination address is always your official IP address and not the local
address, so the router needs to be set up for port forwarding as follows:

Set resolution to SD for the first attempt at 720x576

Set bit rate to 0.8 Mbps to start up
Set to TS/UDP
Go to UDP/TCP settings

Set destination address of your laptop,

e.g. 192.168.0.100
Set your choice of port (e.g. 6500)
Next, you will need to open this stream using VLC
Player. Follow these points to get your stream up
and running:

• Open VLC player.

• Under the ‘Media’ menu, select

‘Open Network Stream.

• In the text box that appears,

enter the following network URL:

UDP://@:6500

• Click ‘Play’ and you’re done!

The stream will be visible after a few seconds. Please note that the VLC Player needs
around five seconds to reach final quality, depending on your PC. If you cannot see a
stream, check your firewall.
RTP/RTSP STREAMING (PULL)

Follow the same steps as with the

UDP/TCP example shown previously.

• Change the resolution to SD

• Select 0.8 Mbps as start-up quality

• Select ‘RTSP/RTP Settings...’

• Create your own password, e.g., 1111

lease note that the user name is automatically

P
generated by your web control settings – our
example given here displays ‘prohd’.

Go to VLC Player. Here, you will enter

the network URL, which contains the
following information:

• Protocol: RTSP
• User name: prohd
• Password: 1111
• IP address (of the camcorder,
e.g., 192.168.0.1)
• Port (fixed): 554
• Stream name (also fixed): Stream

These items must be written in one command line as follows:

rtsp://prohd:1111@192.168.0.100:554/stream (in our example’s case)

Start streaming on the camcorder and press play on the VLC Player software;
it will take a few seconds for the image to appear.
USING ZIXI FORWARD ERROR CORRECTION PROTOCOL

To use the Zixi service, you must first register for the services at www.zixi.com. Some
basic functions are free, such as the built-in Zixi licence in our camcorder. Zixi offers
a wide range of services over the cloud for any dedicated application, from storage to
transmuxing. In each case, you need the Zixi cloud platform first. Zixi can be used in a
simple way with VLC and a Zixi plug-in - for information on this, please ask Zixi directly.
It is also possible to use an Android or Apple iOS player application.

Please note that if you use a Teradek decoder, you can use Zixi cable to cable, but you
will need to purchase the Zixi licence for the Teradek decoder at www.zixi.com.

The following example uses the VLC plug-in - install this plug-in from the file, and once it
starts to run, the plug-in will be installed.

Next, follow the same steps as with

the previous examples.

• Select SD streaming resolution

• Set bitrate to 0.8 Mbps

• Set Zixi protocol type.

• Select ‘ZIXI Settings...’

The destination address is based on your

contract with Zixi, e.g., http://mychannel.zixi.com

• Input this address as follows: mychannel.zixi.com

• Leave port as 2088

• Stream ID: define your own: e.g. mystream

• Password: this is based on your channel setting

at the Zixi cloud main admin, e.g., 150150

• Latency: this can be changed but use medium

at first (latency will be around 5 sec, and around
2 seconds in low mode) from Zixi to Zixi point.
Higher latency = higher error correction up to 30%.
USING ZIXI WITH VLC

To use Zixi with VLC Player, use the Zixi plug-in that you installed. To pick up the stream
from the Zixi cloud service, start the VLC Player with the Zixi plug-in by entering a special
but simple command.

Step 1: Create a new TEXT file somewhere on your PC (in a location of your choice).
Any text program (e.g., Notepad) can be used.

Step 2: Open this new text file and enter one single command line, without any returns.
This command line is based on our example sample names:

zixi://mychannel.zixi.com/mystream

Step 3: Save the text file as mystream.vlc

Please make sure that your Windows system sets the extension to .VLC,
and not to .VLC.TXT – if this is the case, you need to change your folder settings to make
known extensions visible.

When everything is correct, you can simply check in your Windows Explorer as the VLC
icon will be now be in front of the file name, as shown below:

Start the stream on your camcorder and double-click the file – VLC will open and the
streaming will start after a few seconds. It is not necessary to open the VLC first.

From experience gained in providing customer service, any problems experienced in

establishing the data communication shown above generally results from networking rules,
such as WAN/LAN addresses, ports, port forwarding and firewall or proxy rules.
Also, please note that the examples given are based on local IP data communication.

I trust that these guidelines will help you to quickly set up your streaming connection and
that you can also use them to configure other streaming addresses and situations.

Sincerely yours,

Gustav W. Emrich
