Small Homes - The Making Of BouwExpo Tiny Housing In Almere

Thoth Uitgeverij 2019 ISBN 9789068687835 Acqn 29897
Pb 16x22cm 320pp col ills £24

Are small homes going to be the new norm? By mid-century, a large number of people will be
living by themselves, meaning it is time the building industry gave small homes more attention. In
the Dutch city of Almere, BouwEXPO Tiny Housing launched an open ideas competition in 2016.
The winners built sixteen permanent and greatly varied houses at one location in the city, all of
which are actually lived in today. The houses naturally serve as inspiration for small dwellings
elsewhere, whether on vacant lots, as infill, on a roof, or in completely new neighbourhoods. This
book offers an in-depth reportage on the entire design, funding, and building process of the
awarded small homes.

Architecture Of Appropriation - On Squatting As Spatial Practice

Het Nieuwe Instituut 2019 ISBN 9789083015200 Acqn 29898
Pb 17x24cm 396pp col ills £28

The squatting movement in the Netherlands has played a major role in the design of both the
urban fabric and domestic interior, and continues to offer alternatives to the dominant, market-
oriented housing policies. This book acknowledges squatting as an architectural practice,
analysing six locations through drawings, interviews, and archival material to create a record of
past and current struggles, spaces, and oral histories, thereby forming the basis for a new
governmental acquisition policy. It brings together the expertise of the squatting movement with
architects, archivists, scholars, and lawyers in order to discuss approaches to what are often
criminalised spatial practices.

Shared Cities Atlas

nai010 publishers 2019 ISBN 9789462085213 Acqn 29899
Pb 17x24cm 252pp col ills £56.25

The 'Shared Cities Atlas' applies the new, global "sharing paradigm" in architecture and public
sphere to a site-specific situation in seven cities in Central Europe. Mapping current practices of
sharing and new fields of action in case studies, it contextualizes the phenomenon in research
papers, data, and photography. The ideas of a 'right to the city', of common resources, or 'the
urban commons' all of which are in vogue in contemporary architectural discourse illustrate the
paradigm shift towards a sharing perspective. In 'sharing cities' the emphasis lies in the right to
remake the cities as a form of urban social contract with a specific creative or critical agenda.

The first volume of the 'Unmanned: Architecture and Security Series' brings together researchers

and extent of drone operations. It investigates the relationship between drone technology, cultural
production, and forms of surveillance and violence, while in the process analysing and
speculating on how these technological developments impact life in cities. The series will further
explore the consequences of civilian appropriation of military technologies, setting an agenda for
design professionals to engage on a technological, cultural, and political level by promoting forms
of resistance.

The Lines Of The Landscape

Architectura & Natura Press 2019 ISBN 9789461400673 Acqn 29500
Pb 24x34cm 62pp col ills £27

When we look at the Dutch landscape, what do we see? It is completely man-made, which is
actually something that the Dutch are proud of. The dead straight ditch, the dyke round the
polder, and the channelled stream are all drawn lines, hence lines charged with time. You follow
them with your gaze, instead of taking them in at a glance, these typical medial lines with a
telluric effect. More than 25 contributors - photographers, artists, educators, writers, poets,
designers - offer their personal analyses and interpretations of the particularities of the Dutch
landscape in this publication. A landscape whose beauty is found in its adaptability, and in the
fact that it never stands still.

Lisbon Architectural Map 1948 – 2019

A+A Books 2019 ISBN 9789895440108 Acqn 29630
Pb 14x18cm 1pp £12.95

This city map is based on the previously published 'Lisbon Architectural Guide 1948-2013' but
includes much less information, which is appropriate to its format. Since 2013, the city has
experienced significant changes as the efforts of the 2008 economic crisis dwindled, tourism
soared, and affluent new foreign residents began to arrive, seeking to settle in the central or
scenic areas. Private and public developments increased the number of cultural facilities and
interventions in public spaces, and rehabilitation of historic buildings took place. The timeline for
this map begins with the emergence of the modern movement and culminates in today's new
urban landmarks.

This volume addresses the major challenges that cities are facing today. Ten teams of
professionals from a broad range of disciplines conducted research on a single square kilometre
of each of the five largest cities in the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht,
and Eindhoven. The outcome is inspiring visualisations and concrete prospects for action that
suggest ways in which the major transitions of our time can play out in cities. Depicted through
the eyes of designers and supplemented with views from various experts, background material,
and work by students from TU Delft, the future city is climate-proof, energy-efficient, and has
smart mobility solutions.

Pontsteiger - A Reconstruction
Thoth Uitgeverij 2019 ISBN 9789068687767 Acqn 29639
Hb 17x24cm 224pp col ills £28

Published in collaboration with Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam and Arons and Gelauff architects,
this monograph presents a bold new project in Amsterdam: Pontsteiger. The massive building
consists of a six-storey low-rise block that wraps around a plaza on the waterfront. Two 60-metre
towers at the open end of this block frame water views. The towers carry a bridge spanning 48
metres, rising to a height of 90 metres above the city. The result is an iconic building that
foreshadows the growth of high-rise buildings around the river IJ. Today the building stands as a
testament to its formidable, prize-winning design and the uncertainty that its realisation was able
to overcome.

Publishing Acts II - Sibenik Alternating Currents

DPR-BARCELONA 2019 ISBN 9788494938832 Acqn 29986

The second part of the 'Publishing Acts' series, this volume unites a set of collaboratively
produced, open-ended socio-political imaginaries about the Croatian city of Sibenik, re-narrating
its past, present, and future. Additionally, it is a critical reflection on prevailing processes,
methods, and frameworks for architectural knowledge production, specifically on architectural
publishing. When the contributors started their activities in Sibenik, they did not have a specific
outcome in mind, but engaged with a practical, hands-on approach, which in turn determined the
publishing format as a carrier of potential, something active or capable of reactivation, allowing for
multiple iterations.

Archifutures Vol.5 – Apocalypse

DPR-BARCELONA 2019 ISBN 9788494938818 Acqn 29988
Pb 17x23cm 216pp col ills £27.50

This field guide to surviving the future of architecture takes the position that the apocalypse is not
an imminent event - we are experiencing it right now. The aim is to deconstruct and reshape the
notion of "apocalypse", neutralising it and reconsidering what it means to live in these challenging
times. Massive change is required, and architects must take on new responsibilities. In the
featured projects, two common threads emerge: a rise in activism and political engagement
finding expression through architectural endeavour, and bolder efforts to actively decouple
citizens from outmoded political mechanisms and economic structures that no longer reflect the
reality of the situation.

construction of the residential units and recreational buildings, which together express the era's

They come in all shapes and sizes, and somehow the phenomenon is especially prevalent in
Switzerland: homemade cat ladders. Taking the city of Berne as an example, photographer
Brigitte Schuster shows the variety of ways humans facilitate the comings and goings of their
feline friends in the context of the surrounding architecture. From a simple wooden plank to
complex, scaffold-like constructions rising up to four storeys in a zigzag fashion, they express
sociological, architectural, and aesthetic peculiarities, which are further developed in
accompanying texts. As such, the book serves as both a guideline and source of inspiration in
creating your own cat ladders.
